"Fat Juicy & Wet" is a hyphy, miami bass and electro-funk strip club anthem. [4] [12] [13] It is also a dirty rap track. [14] The instrumental was called "snappy" and a "throwback". [15] The single mixes Red's "raunchy style" and Mars's "smooth, genre-crossing" voice. [16] He does his version of Red's "visceral fuck-rap". [12] The song starts with an intro characteristic of "Mars's trademark airiness" as he sings the titular chorus, "Fat, juicy, and wet". [14] He then proceeds to rap "that good kitty-kitty, good kitty-kitty/Make it my pet" and being "struck by "p**sy so good" he wants "to throw up a set despite not gang banging." [13] [15] On her turn, Red "introduces a graphic rendition of the suggestive acts", such as "eating, dripping", and other various other sexual nuances. [15] [14] She keeps rapping a in "a sharp, streamlined" with "raunchy" lyrics, "Throw my legs back, eat my booty from the front/Milk mustache on your face when I cum" and "signing autographs in squirt juice". [12] [13]
Uproxx 's Aaron Williams dubbed the track a "raunchy, upbeat party rap anthem" that finds Mars and Red flirting and flexing, while the latter takes it back to her roots by boasting about the "quality of her lady parts" mixed with romantic endeavors. Mars reciprocates her energy and admits being unable to resist her. [17] Jason Lipshutz from Billboard affirmed Mars steps into rap by "dropping a gleefully explicit anthem built around" Red's "sexual innuendos and a club-pulverizing beat." [18] Red's flow recalls the one of Three 6 Mafia's "Slob on My Knob" (1993). [19] HipHopDX 's Sam Moore called "Fat Juicy & Wet" a "ridiculously raunchy ode to getting it on." [20] On the other hand, Macolm Trapp from Rap-Up found it to be a "risqué homage to the female anatomy". [21] Some critics have compared it to Cardi B featuring Megan Thee Stallion's "WAP" (2020). [12] [22] Shaad D'Souza, while writing for The New York Times affirmed it is the type of song that enters "mainstream" once in a while and it is meant for "rap radio and party playlists." [23]
"Fat Juicy & Wet" was met with mixed reviews from music critics, who criticized the "lyrical depth", while others compelled Mars "for stepping out of his comfort zone". [16] D'Souza from Paper dubbed the collaboration "a match made in heaven." [24] [25] Stereogum 's Tom Breihan commended the song on its songcraft, production, and utilization of self-aware, silly raunchiness, writing "the shock value is part of the fun". He considered the song a "blast". [12] Elias Andrews writing for HotNewHipHop called the song "catchy" and "raunchy", he praised Red's performance on the track. Andrews added the "sweetness of the instrumental and Mars's backing vocals" makes the track being "in a pop sphere." [19] Jon Powell writing for Revolt dubbed the single an "infectious offering." [26] Jonathan Morales writing for The Miami Hurricane praised the "infectiously poppy and electric bassline". [14] D'Souza who also writes for The New York Times said the track is "dialing up the knowing greasiness" of the 24K Magic album and it has a "playful hedonism". [23] Elaina Bernstein of Hypebeast express admiration for "the unexpected duo's surprising musical chemistry" [27]
In a different Vibe review, Armon Sadler, gave the song a mixed review. He affirmed the song is a fusion of Mars's "musicality and slight penchant" with "vulgar lyrics" from Red's "unfiltered raw sexuality". Despite the lyrics, the track has "an undeniable bounce". Sadler continued saying you might be "nodding and moving your shoulders without realizing it". [25] The A.V. Club Drew Gillis called the song "fun", despite some of Mars's verses being "jarring". Gillis thought Red's lyrics were "more delirious" than Mars's verses. [22] Anna Kaufman writing for USA Today noticed that unlike other Mars's tracks, such as "Versace on the Floor" (2017) or "Please Me" (2019) with Cardi B, which "set the stage for their pairing", this one has no "subtlety". [28]
In contrast, Alphonse Pierre of Pitchfork started by saying the song will make you turn of the computer and sit quiet. Pierre negatively commented on Mars's vocals calling them "fake-sexy speak-sing" and Red's as "she sounds like a parody of herself". Pierre unfavorable reviewed the track's execution of the concept together with its production. He added that Mars and the Stereotypes slaughter "the West Coast ratchet club sound" by making it a "Las Vegas show tunes sheen". [13] Joe Budden, an American broadcaster and former rapper, on his self-titled podcast, gave "Fat Juicy & Wet" a very harsh review. Budden compared Mars's change in lyrics "style to tactics employed by Donald Trump" to relate to black people. [29]
"Fat Huicy & Wet" made "people talking and listening" as it initiated "internet debate" and sparked fan opinions. [16] The latter were mostly mixed, as the "raunchy" lyrics were a "hard pivot" for Mars, others enjoyed the "unapologetically bold energy". [16] [21] [30] According to Kaufman fans had doubted about the collaboration, proving right after listening to it. [28] Fans preferred his collaboration, "Please Me" (2019), with Cardi B and raised concerns wetter "Fat Huicy & Wet" fited his artistic legacy. [16] Morales also noticed the song divided the fans, due to Mars's verses being "highly contentious" and not Red's "provocative lyrics and intense cadence". [14]
