The Filipino Chess Championship is organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).
Since 2008 the final stages of both the men's and women's championship, dubbed "Battle of the Grandmasters", have been round-robin tournaments held concurrently.

Grandmaster (GM) is a title awarded to chess players by the world chess organization FIDE. Apart from World Champion, Grandmaster is the highest title a chess player can attain.
Ray Robson is an American chess player. He was awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE in 2010. Robson fulfilled the requirements for the title in 2009 at the age of 14 years, 11 months and 16 days.
Rogelio Antonio Jr. is a Filipino chess grandmaster, who was awarded the title in 1993. He is affectionately known as "Joey" Antonio or GM Joey. Antonio finished tied for 3rd-8th places in the 2009 Asian Chess Championship and became the first player in the Philippines' history to qualify for the World Cup later in 2009. As of November 2020, his Elo rating was 2421, making him the 14th ranked player in the Philippines and number 2368 in the world.
Wesley Barbasa So is a Filipino-born American chess grandmaster, the inaugural and current World Fischer Random Chess Champion and a two-time, and the current, U.S. Chess Champion. He is also a three-time Filipino Chess Champion. On the March 2017 FIDE rating list, he was ranked number two in the world and had an Elo rating of 2822, making him the fifth-highest rated player in history.
Darwin Laylo is a Filipino chess grandmaster who obtained his title in 2007 thereby becoming the Philippines' 7th grandmaster at that time joining GMs Eugene Torre (1974), Rosendo Balinas (1976), Rogelio Antonio, Jr. (1993), Buenaventura Villamayor (2000), Nelson Mariano II (2004) and Mark Paragua (2005). He is a Business Management graduate at the San Sebastian College - Recoletos where he was also a former varsity chess player.
Aleksej Aleksandrov is a Belarusian chess player. He was awarded the title Grandmaster by FIDE in 1997. Aleksandrov is a five-time Belarusian champion and played on the Belarusian national team at the Chess Olympiad, the World Team Chess Championship and the European Team Chess Championship. He competed in the FIDE World Championship in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2004, and in the FIDE World Cup in 2017.

Anish Kumar Giri is a Dutch chess player. A chess prodigy, he completed the requirements for the title Grandmaster at the age of 14 years, 7 months and 2 days. FIDE awarded him the title in 2009.
Eugenio "Eugene" Torre is a Filipino chess player. In 1974, at 22 years old, he became the first Asian to qualify for the title Grandmaster by winning the silver medal in the 21st Chess Olympiad in Nice, France. He is considered the strongest chess player the Philippines produced during the 1980s and 1990s, and played for the Philippines on board 1 in seventeen Chess Olympiads.
FIDE titles are awarded by the international chess governing body FIDE for outstanding performance. The highest such title is Grandmaster (GM). Titles generally require a combination of Elo rating and norms. Once awarded, titles are held for life except in cases of fraud or cheating. Open titles may be earned by all players, while women's titles are restricted to female players. Many strong female players hold both open and women's titles. FIDE also awards titles for arbiters, organizers and trainers. Titles for correspondence chess, chess problem composition and chess problem solving are no longer administered by FIDE.
Martyn Kravtsiv is a Ukrainian chess grandmaster. He competed in the FIDE World Cup in 2013.
Nelson Isurina Mariano II is a Filipino chess player. He was awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE in 2004, the fifth from the Philippines. Mariano won the Asian Junior Chess Championship in 1994.
Buenaventura "Bong" Mendieta Villamayor is a Filipino chess player. He was awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE in 2000, becoming the fourth from the Philippines to achieve this feat.
Oliver Barbosa is a Filipino chess grandmaster. He earned his International Master title in 2008 and his grandmaster title in 2011. Barbosa won the 10th Parsvnath International Grandmasters Tournament in New Delhi, with 9.5/11 and an astounding Tournament Performance Rating (TPR) of 2710. By winning the said tournament, he also raised his ELO Live Rating from 2573 to 2627 as he gained 53.8 ELO rating points to become the Philippines 3rd Super GM. He earned his first GM norm in the Asian Individual in Mashad, Iran and his second norm in the Philippines National Championships. In 2014, he tied for 1st–2nd with Francisco Vallejo Pons in the Thailand Open Chess Championship.
Julio Catalino Sadorra is a Filipino chess grandmaster. He competed in the FIDE World Cup in 2017 where he was seeded 101 and where he lost to the 28th-seeded Super GM Maxim Matlakov, 0.5-1.5. Sadorra has represented the Philippines at the Chess Olympiad since 2014. He tied for first place in the U.S. Open Chess Championship in 2013.
Kim Steven Yap is a Filipino chess player. He holds the FIDE title of International Master (IM).
John Paul Gomez is a Filipino chess player. He was awarded the title of International Master (IM) in 2007 and International Grandmaster (GM) in 2009. He is a three-time Filipino national junior champion and has also won the Filipino Chess Championship.
Rogelio Barcenilla, Jr. is a Filipino chess player with a title of International Grandmaster. He was awarded the title of International Master (IM) in 1990 and the title of International Grandmaster (GM) in 2010. He is ranked #5 in the Philippines, #195 among all players in the Asian Continent and #1461 among all players in the world. He is currently based in the United States where he has United States Chess Federation (USCF) rating of 2570 and a FIDE rating of 2463. He has also a 2415 rating in Blitz Chess.
Enrico Sevillano is a Filipino chess player with a title of International Grandmaster which he received in 2012. He now plays for the United States Chess Federation (USCF) where he has a Regular Rating of 2542, Quick Rating of 2488 and Blitz Rating of 2572. He is ranked #112 among all players in the US, #72 among all active players, #235 in the American Continent and #1796 among all players in the world. Per FIDE, he reached a peak rating of 2537 and currently has an ELO standard rating of 2447 and blitz rating of 2515.
