The awards were introduced by the Filmfare magazine of The Times Group in 1954, the same year as the National Film Awards. Saroj Khan was an Indian dance choreographer in Hindi cinema. She was born in Bombay State, India. She was best known for the dance form mujra and the first woman choreographer in Bollywood. With a career spanning over forty years, she choreographed more than 3000 songs. She died on 3 July 2020 of a sudden cardiac arrest.

The 34th Filmfare Awards were held in 1989, after a 2-year gap.

Saroj Khan won Filmfare Award for Best Choreographer for the song.

"Nimbooda" is a traditional folk tune from Rajasthan. It was first popularized by Gazi Khan Barna of the Manganiar community in Rajasthan.
