Sholay led the ceremony with 10 nominations, followed by Amanush and Deewaar with 9 nominations each, along with Aandhi and Sanyasi with 7 nominations each.
Deewaar won 7 awards, including Best Film, Best Director (for Yash Chopra) and Best Supporting Actor (for Shashi Kapoor). thus becoming the most-awarded film at the ceremony.
Sholay, considered one of the most successful films of Bollywood, was expected to steam-roll the competition, controversially went home with just 1 win out of its 10 nominations, winning Best Editing (for M. S. Shinde).
Sanjeev Kumar received dual nominations for Best Actor for his performances in Aandhi and Sholay, winning for the former.
Hema Malini received dual nominations for Best Actress for her performances in Khushboo and Sanyasi, but lost to Lakshmi who won the award for Julie, her first and only win in the category.
Pran received dual nominations for Best Supporting Actor for his performances in Do Jhoot and Majboor, but lost to Shashi Kapoor who won the award for Deewaar, his sole acting Filmfare award.

Shashi Kapoor was an Indian actor and film producer who is best known for his works in Hindi films. A recipient of several accolades, including four National Film Awards and two Filmfare Awards, he also featured in a number of English-language international films, particularly films produced by Merchant Ivory. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan in 2011, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, in 2014, for his contribution to Indian cinema.
Hema Malini is an Indian actress, director, producer, and politician who is currently serving as a member of the Lok Sabha from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), representing Mathura constituency since 2014. She was a member of the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka from 2011 to 2012, subsequent to her nomination to that chamber from 2003 to 2009 as a member of the BJP. Primarily known for her work in Hindi films, she has starred in both comic and dramatic roles, and is one of the most popular and successful leading actresses of mainstream Hindi cinema.
Sholay is a 1975 Indian Hindi-language action-adventure film directed by Ramesh Sippy, produced by his father G. P. Sippy, and written by Salim–Javed. The film is about two criminals, Veeru (Dharmendra) and Jai, hired by a retired police officer to capture the ruthless dacoit Gabbar Singh. Hema Malini and Jaya Bhaduri also star, as Veeru and Jai's love interests, Basanti and Radha, respectively. The music was composed by R D Burman.
Zanjeer (transl. Shackles) is a 1973 Indian Hindi-language action crime film directed and produced by Prakash Mehra from a screenplay written by Salim–Javed. It stars Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Pran, Ajit Khan and Bindu. At a time when India was suffering from exceptional corruption and low economic growth and the common man was left with frustration and anger over the system, Zanjeer began shifting Hindi cinema in a violent and aggressive direction. The film also ended the struggling period for Bachchan, which turned him into a rising star. It was a blockbuster success domestically in India and overseas in the Soviet Union.
Ramesh Sippy is an Indian film director, actor and producer in Hindi cinema. He is particularly known for being director in Sholay (1975), which is regarded as one of the most influential film in Northern India ever made. The Government of India honoured him with Padma Shri in 2013.
Salim–Javed were an Indian screenwriting duo, composed of Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, working in Bollywood. They are noted for being among the first Indian screenwriters to achieve star status, becoming one of the most successful Indian screenwriters of all time. They are regarded as among "Hindi cinema's greatest screenwriters". They worked together on 24 films during 1971–1987, of which twenty were commercially and critically successful films. They worked together on 22 Bollywood films, as well as two Kannada films.

Seeta Aur Geeta is a 1972 Indian Hindi-language comedy drama film written by Salim–Javed and directed by Ramesh Sippy. Released in India on 3 November 1972, the film stars an ensemble cast of Hema Malini, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Roopesh Kumar, Manorama, Satyen Kappu, Honey Irani and Pratima Devi. The music was composed by R. D. Burman.
Trishul (transl. Trident) is a 1978 Indian Hindi-language action drama film, directed by Yash Chopra, written by Salim–Javed and produced by Gulshan Rai. It features music by Mohammed Zahur Khayyam, with lyrics by Sahir Ludhianvi. The film features an ensemble cast of Shashi Kapoor, Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Raakhee Gulzar, Hema Malini, Poonam Dhillon, Sachin and Waheeda Rehman.
Kranti (transl. Revolution) is a 1981 Indian historical drama film, produced and directed by Manoj Kumar, with the story and screenplay written by Salim–Javed. It stars an ensemble cast, consisting of Dilip Kumar in the title role along with Manoj Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha, Hema Malini, Parveen Babi in pivotal roles. The film also marked the return of Dilip Kumar after a four-year hiatus. It ranks among the top 10 highest grossing Indian films of all time, when adjusted for ticket-price inflation. It was one of the most expensive Indian films of the time and it went on to become the highest grossing Indian film of the 1980s decade by a distance, when adjusted for inflation. Kranti is the biggest patriotic hit ever seen in India. It was the second highest grossing Indian film ever behind Sholay (1975) at the time of its release. However, it did higher business than Sholay in its original run. It grossed ₹20 crore as compared to ₹15 crore of Sholay in the original run. Sholay did exceptionally well in re-runs earning more profit in the meanwhile period.
Shaan is a 1980 Indian Hindi-language action crime film directed by Ramesh Sippy and produced by G. P. Sippy under the production banner of Sippy Films with a story written by Salim–Javed after the blockbuster success of their previous venture, Sholay (1975). The film was released in India on 12 December 1980 and stars an ensemble cast of Sunil Dutt, Shashi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Raakhee Gulzar, Parveen Babi, Bindiya Goswami, Johnny Walker and Kulbhushan Kharbanda. The music was composed by R. D. Burman.
Sanyasi (transl. Hermit) is a 1975 Hindi film directed by Sohanlal Kanwar, starring Manoj Kumar and Hema Malini as leads. The film is noted for its music by Shankar Jaikishan. The film was the third highest grossing film of the year.
Gulzar is an Indian Urdu poet, lyricist, author, screenwriter, and film director known for his works in Hindi cinema. He is regarded as one of greatest Urdu poets of this era. He started his career with music director S.D. Burman as a lyricist in the 1963 film Bandini and worked with many music directors including R. D. Burman, Salil Chowdhury, Vishal Bhardwaj and A. R. Rahman. Gulzar also writes poetry, dialogues and scripts. He directed films such as Aandhi and Mausam during the 1970s and the TV series Mirza Ghalib in the 1980s. He also directed Kirdaar in 1993.
