Thomas Frederick O'Connell (born 1976/1977) [1] [2] [3] is an American politician and currently serves as the 10th Mayor of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County. [4] From 2015 to 2023,he served as a member of the Nashville Metro Council representing the 19th district.
O'Connell was born in Nashville,Tennessee,to Beatrice,a retired teacher,and Tim,a federal civil servant and part-time songwriter. [5] He graduated from Montgomery Bell Academy in 1995,and earned two bachelor's degrees from Brown University in 2000,one in Music and the other in Computer Science. [5] [6] [7] He is of Jewish descent through one of his grandparents. [8]
O'Connell began his career in software and technology,working for startups and publicly traded companies. He was also president of the Salemtown Neighbors Neighborhood Association. [4] From 2005 until 2010,he co-hosted a political talk show on WRVU,the Vanderbilt University student radio station. [9]
In 2002,O'Connell ran as an Independent against future Speaker of the Tennessee House of Representatives Beth Harwell. [9]
O'Connell formerly served as a board member and chair of the board for the Nashville Metropolitan Transit Authority. [9] While municipal elections in Nashville are officially nonpartisan,O'Connell identifies as a Democrat. [10]
In 2015,O'Connell ran for the Nashville Metro Council in the 19th district,receiving 54 percent of the vote during the August 6 election. [11] In 2019,he ran for reelection unopposed. [9]
In April 2022,O'Connell announced that he would run for mayor of Nashville in the 2023 Nashville mayoral election. [12] In the first round of voting,O'Connell led all candidates with 27.2% of the vote. [13] He defeated Alice Rolli in the runoff on September 14,2023,winning 64% of the vote. [14] He was sworn into office on September 25. [15]
O'Connell lives in the Salemtown neighborhood of Nashville with his partner,Dr. Whitney Boon,an attending child neurologist at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt,and their two children. [5] [4] He has been known to occasionally DJ at events in the Nashville area. [16]

Clifton Beverly Briley was an American attorney and politician,the first mayor of the newly consolidated metropolitan government of Nashville and Davidson County in Tennessee. Elected to the mayor's position in 1962 as a Democrat,Briley served three terms from 1963 to 1975;he was prevented by term limits from running again. He had previously served as county judge of Davidson County for several terms,from 1950 to 1963.

Clifton David Briley is an American politician. A Democrat,he was the eighth mayor of Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County. He was elected in 2015 as vice-mayor and was sworn in as acting mayor after Megan Barry's resignation on March 6,2018. Briley went on to win the May 24 special election for the balance of Barry's term with 55% of the vote over nearly a dozen challengers,avoiding a runoff and making him the official mayor of Nashville. John Cooper defeated Briley in the 2019 Nashville mayoral election. Briley was the first native of both Nashville and Tennessee since Bill Boner in 1991 to be mayor.
Karl Foster Dean is an American politician who served as the 6th Mayor of Nashville,Tennessee from 2007 to 2015. A member of the Democratic Party,he previously served as Nashville's Director of Law under Mayor Bill Purcell from 1999 to 2007. In 1990,1994 and 1998,he was elected the city's public defender. Dean,an attorney by occupation,is currently an adjunct professor of law at Vanderbilt University Law School.

Geodis Park,known during development and construction as Nashville SC Stadium and Nashville Fairgrounds Stadium,is a 30,109-seat soccer-specific stadium at the historic Nashville Fairgrounds in Nashville,Tennessee. Let's Move Nashville was a local referendum in Nashville,Tennessee,on May 1,2018,that would have funded the construction of a mass transit system under the Nashville Metropolitan Transit Authority in Davidson County. The $8.9 billion plan would have included several light rail and bus rapid transit lines along major corridors,to be built between 2018 and 2032. The plan was proposed in 2017 by Mayor Megan Barry under the Tennessee IMPROVE Act and supported by some Nashville politicians and businesses.

John Cooper is an American businessman who was the mayor of Nashville,Tennessee from 2019 to 2023. He served as a councilman at-large on the Metropolitan Council of Nashville and Davidson County from 2015 until 2019. A member of the Democratic Party,he is the brother of former U.S. representative Jim Cooper,who represented Tennessee's 5th congressional district,which was also based in Nashville. He is also the son of former governor and U.S. Ambassador to Peru Prentice Cooper.

Choose How You Move is a local referendum in Nashville,Tennessee that was held on November 5,2024 and passed with 66% voter approval. The referendum asked Davidson County residents to approve a 0.5% increase in the sales tax to fund Mayor Freddie O'Connell's signature $3.1 billion transportation improvement program. The tax increase will go into effect on February 1,2025.
