Gapeau was a French transport ship which was built as the German fishing trawler Johann Schulte in 1939. She was requisitoned by the Kriegsmarine during the Second World War. She was used as a minesweeper under the pennant numbers M 1406 and M 4417, and later as the Vorpostenboot V 625 Johann Schulte. She was sunk in 1945. Seized by the French post-war and entered service with the French Navy as Gapeau. Sold in 1969, she was scrapped in 1970.
The ship 36.37 m (119 ft 4 in) long, with a beam of 7.49 metres (24 ft 7 in). She had a depth of 3.20 m (10 ft 6 in). She was assessed at 298 GRT, 136 NRT. She was powered by a diesel engine, which had 8 cylinders of 28 centimetres (11 in) diameter by 44.9 centimetres (17+11⁄16 in) stroke. The engine was built by Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz AG, Köln, Germany, and was rated at 94 nhp or 500 bhp. [1] [2] It drove a single screw which could propel the ship at 10.5 knots (19.4 km/h). [1] [3]
Gapeau was built as yard number 130 by Schulte & Bruns, Emden, Germany. [3] She was launched as the fishing vessel Johann Schulte on 22 March 1939 and completed on 27 April. She was owned by the Großer Kürfurst Heringfischerei AG, Emden. [4] Her port of registry was Emden. She was allocated the Code Letters DGNI, [1] and the fishing boat registration AE 104. [4]
On 7 January 1940, Johann Schulte was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine, serving with 14 Minensuchflotille as the minesweeper M 1406. On 22 March 1942, she was reallocated to 44 Minensuchflotille and her pennant number was changed to M 4417. On 1 January 1943, she was designated as a vorpostenboot . She was allocated to 6 Vorpostenflotille as V 625 Johann Schulte. She was sunk in 1945. [4]
Later in 1945, Johann Schulte was seized by the French at Saint-Nazaire. [2] Her pennant number was changed to Na 80. She was repaired, entering service with the 28ème Division de Drageurs on 1 January 1946, based at Brest, Finistère. Her pennant number was later changed to B284 and, again, to A616. [2] On 5 December 1947, she was taken out of service and rebuilt as a "regional transport", re-entering service named Gapeau, [4] the third ship of the French Navy bearing that name. Her complement was 22 crew and an officer. She was unarmed. She was initially based at Lorient, Morbihan, and later at Oran, Algeria, in the Mediterranean Sea, providing cabotage to the Demi-Brigade de Fusiliers-Marins, operating between Oran and Nemours, Algeria. [5] Gapeau completed her 100th Oran–Nemours round-trip on 12 March 1959 and on 23 April was placed into ready reserve. [2]
Gapeau was condemned on 20 November 1969 and allocated the disposal number Q 455 and then sold. [2] [4] She was scrapped at Brest in 1970. [2] [5]
Carl Röver was a German fishing trawler which was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine in the Second World War for use as a vorpostenboot, serving as V 209 Carl Röver and V 203 Carl Röver. Severely damaged in the war, she was repaired post-war and re-engined. She served as the fishing trawler Essen and was later converted to a cargo ship. She served as Hans Peter, Handsome, Handsome I, Walid and Samir under the flags of West Germany, the United Kingdom, Panama and the Lebanon. She was lost in 1985.
Otto Bröhan was a German fishing trawler that was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine in the Second World War for use as a Vorpostenboot, serving as V 207 Otto Bröhan and V 206 Otto Bröhan. She was scuttled at Caen, Calvados, France in June 1944. She was raised in March 1945 and converted to a survey ship for the French Navy, renamed Ingénieur Hydrographe Nicolas. She served until 1960 and was then scrapped.
R. Walther Darré was a German fishing trawler that was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine in the Second World War for use as a Vorpostenboot. She served as V 210 R. Walther Darré and V 208 R. Walther Darré. She was sunk in the English Channel by British motor torpedo boats in July 1944.
Friedrich Busse was a German fishing trawler that was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine in the Second World War for use as a Vorpostenboot, serving as V 211 Friedrich Busse and V 212 Friedrich Busse. She was scuttled at Caen, Calvados, France in June 1944.
Hinrich Hey was a German fishing trawler that was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine during the Second World War for use as a Vorpostenboot. She was sunk in the English Channel by British motor torpedo boats in July 1944.

Zieten was a German fishing trawler that was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine in the Second World War for use as a Vorpostenboot, serving as V 213 Zieten and V 204 Zieten. She was scuttled in January 1945 but was raised later that year and rebuilt as the survey ship Astrolabe. She served with the French Navy 1947–48 and was sold for use as a fishing trawler. In service until 1953, she was scrapped the following year.
M 1507 Teutonia was a German fishing trawler that was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine in the Second World War for use as an auxiliary minesweeper. Built as Teutonia, she served as M 1507 Teutonia, the vorpostenbootV 204 Teutonia and M 4628 Teutonia. She became the French fishing trawler Rouget post-war and was scrapped in 1961.
V 303 Tannenberg was a German fishing trawler that was requisitioned in the Second World War by the Kriegsmarine for use as a vorpostenboot. She was returned to her owners post war. In 1958, she was re-engined and converted to a cargo ship. In 1970 she was sold to Greece and renamed Panaghia. She was sold to Panama in 1975 and was renamed Nikos then Chantal. She was wrecked in 1978.
V 305 Ostpreussen was a German fishing trawler that was requisitioned in the Second World War by the Kriegsmarine for use as a vorpostenboot and later a Vorpostensicherungsboot. She was returned to her owners post war. In 1957, she was re-engined, converted to a cargo ship and renamed Stella Maris. Sold to the Netherlands that year, she was scrapped in 1958.
August Bösch was a German fishing trawler that was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine in the Second World War for use as a Vorpostenboot, serving as V 409 August Bösch. She was bombed and sunk off the coast of Vendée, France in August 1944.
Kergroise was built in 1918 as the German patrol vessel SMS Bunnemann. Allocated to the French Navy in 1920, she was sold in 1921, becoming the fishing trawler Kergroise. She was requisition by the French Navy in 1939 for use as a minesweeper. She was sunk in June 1940. Subsequently refloated in April 1941 and repaired. In October 1942 was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine for use as a vorpostenboot, serving as V 422 Kergroise. She was sunk in June 1944.

In 1917 she was acquired by the French Navy for use as the watchboat Chimpanzé. She was sold in 1919 and became the French fishing boat Keryado, later Keryado II. In 1942, she was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine, serving as the VorpostenbootV 423 Keryado II. She was returned to her owners in 1945 and was scrapped in 1955.
