"FukUmean" (edited for radio as "UMean" or "F**UMean") [1] (stylized in lowercase letters and pronounced "fuck you mean") is a song by American rapper Gunna. It was sent to rhythmic contemporary radio through YSL Records and 300 Entertainment as the second and final single from his fourth studio album, A Gift & a Curse , on July 11, 2023. [1] Gunna wrote the song with producers Flo and Dunk Rock.

Composition

The song contains "flute melodies with some lightly plucked strings and piano" in production, along with bass, hi-hat and snare. In the lyrics, Gunna centers on his fame and lifestyle of wealth, drugs, and women, [2] while also taking aim at his haters. [3] [4] [5]

Critical reception

The song received generally positive reviews from critics. Gabriel Bras Nevares of HotNewHipHop praised Gunna's performance, writing "his flow on here plays to his strengths, and it's one he's proven to rock with each song. Furthermore, his easy switch-ups between measured lines and faster rhymes make each stanza more enjoyable to experience." Regarding the lyrical content, he stated "To be fair, if Gunna didn't go deeper on these themes on other tracks, some lines here might seem tone-deaf considering the conversation around his snitching allegations. But regardless, he gives listeners a reason to perk their ears up with catchy vocalizations and a killer beat." Nevares also wrote of the production, "Ultimately, the deep bass hits, shifting hi-hat patterns, and sharp snare turn this peaceful sonic pallet into a heater." [2] Complex 's Eric Skelton and Stefan Breskin both considered it the best song from A Gift & a Curse. [6] In an album review for Rolling Stone , Mark Braboy described the tracks from "Ca$h $hit" to "P Angels" as "by far the best sequencing of songs on a hip-hop record this year, especially the transition from the Dunk Rock-produced 'fukumean' to the exhilarating 'Rodeo Dr'"; [7] Breskin similarly commented the transition to be "as smooth as butter". [6] Slant Magazine 's Paul Attard stated the song "might just be the sleekest Gunna has sounded in a hot minute, and serves a nice reprieve from the album's prevailingly bleak operatics." [5] Alphonse Pierre of Pitchfork commented, "He's better off on songs like 'Fukumean,' where he goes back-to-the-basics—smoking good weed, thinking about boobs—deploying the explosive, run-on flow he nailed down around Drip Harder ." [8] Hamza Riaz of Mic Cheque regarded it as one of the "only instances of Gunna having his usual fun" and best tracks from the album. [9] Yousef Srour of HipHopDX gave a negative review of the song, deeming it "feels cliché" and the lyrics "Ice, lil' bird, shittin' on all you lil' turds" as among the lines of the album that "stick out like sore thumbs". Sergio Giavanni Kitchens, known professionally as Gunna, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. He signed with Young Thug's YSL Records, an imprint of 300 Entertainment in 2016, and rose to fame with his third mixtape, Drip Season 3 (2018). It moderately entered the Billboard 200, while his collaborative mixtape Drip Harder with fellow Georgia rapper Lil Baby, peaked at number four on the chart. Its lead single, "Drip Too Hard" reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100, received diamond certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and was nominated for Best Rap/Sung Performance at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards.

It peaked at number four on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming the highest-charting song for Gunna and the third highest-charting song for Lil Baby. "First Off" is a song by American rapper Future featuring fellow American rapper Travis Scott. "Lemonade" is a song by American hip hop collective and record label Internet Money and American rappers Gunna and Don Toliver featuring Canadian rapper Nav. It was released as the second single from Internet Money's debut studio album, B4 the Storm, on August 14, 2020. The song was produced by Internet Money producers Taz Taylor, Nick Mira, Alec Wigdahl, E-Trou, and Pharaoh Vice, who all wrote it with the rappers alongside John Mitchell, Jozzy, and Donny Flores. On September 14, 2022, it was included as the sole bonus track on Nav's fourth studio album, Demons Protected by Angels, which was released five days before. The official music video premiered later the same day as the song on Lyrical Lemonade and followed a SpongeBob SquarePants theme. "Wants and Needs" is a song by Canadian rapper Drake, featuring vocals from American rapper Lil Baby. It was released as the second out of three tracks from Drake's fourth extended play, Scary Hours 2, through Republic Records and OVO Sound, on March 5, 2021. It includes a feature produced and written by Lil Baby. Drake wrote the song alongside producers Cardo, Dez Wright, and 40. The song debuted at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. making it Lil Baby's highest charting single on the chart, eventually becoming tied with "Girls Want Girls", another collaboration with Drake, and "Do We Have a Problem?", with Nicki Minaj.

"Pushin P" is a song by American rappers Gunna and Future featuring fellow American rapper Young Thug. It was released on January 7, 2022, as the second track from Gunna's third studio album DS4Ever. The "hypnotic", alliterative track finds the trio rapping about "pushin p", which is a phrase popularized by Gunna that means to "keep it real". The track was regarded by some critics as a standout from DS4Ever, and became the album's highest-charting track, debuting at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100.

"Jimmy Cooks" is a song by Canadian rapper Drake featuring British rapper 21 Savage, released on June 17, 2022 as the final track from the former's seventh studio album Honestly, Nevermind, with the latter being the only guest appearance on the album.

It is a remake of "I Don't Wanna Know" (2004) by Mario Winans featuring Enya and P. Diddy, which is based on a sample of the Fugees' song "Ready or Not" (1996), and itself samples Enya's "Boadicea" (1987). Winans himself returned to contribute to the song as a backing vocalist along with Travis Scott. Diddy himself would also join the artists on a remix of the song on March 17, 2023.

A Gift & a Curse is the fourth studio album by American rapper Gunna. It was released through YSL Records and 300 Entertainment on June 16, 2023. Production on the album was handled by Turbo, Omar Grand, Cam Griffin, Kenny Stuntin, Sim, Nils, Pooh Beatz, Lnk, Mario Petersen, Flo, X-Plosive, Royal808, Dunk Rock, Angelo, Yung Talent, Willis Keaton, Slowburnzz, 88 Krazy, Larrance Dopson, Swiff D, Evrgrn, Zookids, Aviator Keyyz, Rick Anthony, Sammy Haig, Cubeatz, Fresh Ayr, and Jojokelete. The album was released as a surprise and is Gunna's first project to not feature any guest appearances. It was supported by two singles, "Bread & Butter" and "FukUMean", and serves as the follow-up to his previous album, DS4Ever (2022).

"I Know ?" is a song by American rapper and singer Travis Scott. Originally released on July 28, 2023 as a track from his fourth studio album Utopia via Cactus Jack and Epic Records, it was sent to US pop radio as the fourth single on September 26. With a "nerve-jangling" piano instrumental, the song was written by Scott himself, Oz, Coleman, Buddy Ross, Kobe Hood, & Terrance George, and produced by the former four.
