Gurjapneet Singh (born 8 November 1998) is an Indian cricketer who plays for Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket and Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. [2] He is a left arm medium fast bowler and right-handed batsman.
He was born on November 8,1998,in Ludhiana,Punjab. [3] [4] He lived in Ambala in the state of Haryana but moved to Chennai in 2017 to pursue his cricketing ambitions. [5]
He played college cricket and played in the TNCA third division for Egmore RC prior to playing for Dindigul Dragons in the Tamil Nadu Premier League in 2021. [5] There,he developed his skills and worked closely with Yo Mahesh. However,a back injury ruled him out of most of 2022. [4] He moved to Siechem Madurai Panthers for the 2023 TNPL and finished the season with 15 wickets at an average of 14.10. [6]
In 2024,he acted as a net bowler for the Indian cricket team and bowled out Virat Kohli at the Chepauk nets in the lead-up to their first Test match against Bangladesh in Chennai. [4] The spell also included Kohli giving him advice about adjusting his angle to bowl around the wicket when the ball wasn't moving. [7] [8]
He made his first-class cricket debut for Tamil Nadu cricket team in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy against Saurashtra cricket team finishing with bowling figures of six for 22 on debut,including test batsman Cheteshwar Pujara,whom he trapped leg-before for a duck. [9] [5] [4] These were the best bowling figures by a Tamil Nadu fast bowler in a home match since 2005-06. In his maiden Ranji season,he captured 13 wickets in four matches. [3]
He acted as a net bowler for the Chennai Super Kings prior to their purchase of him for a Rs 2.2 crore in the 2025 IPL Super Auction following a bidding war between themselves, [10] Lucknow Super Giants and the Gujarat Titans. [3] This figure was more than 7 times his pre-auction base price. [11] [12]
He is a 6’3”left-arm seam bowler. [13] He is described as capable of bowling regularly at mid-130kmph with the ability to hit the deck hard and extract bounce and pace from the surface whilst being in possession of a deceptive back-of-the-hand slower ball and the ability to bowl yorkers. [14]
He graduated with a B.A. and M.A. from Guru Nanak College,Chennai. [5] He is a Sikh. [15]
