The Hiawatha impact structure is a probable impact structure discovered beneath the Hiawatha Glacier in northwest Greenland, from which it gets its name. It was identified using airborne radar surveys that showed the presence of a crater-like depression in the bedrock beneath the ice. Shocked quartz grains and melt rock clasts have been found in fluvio-glacial sediments deposited by a river that drains the area of the structure. The timing of the impact has been dated using argon-argon dating and uranium-lead dating of zircon crystals within the melt rock to 57.99 ± 0.54 million years ago, during the late Paleocene.
In 2016 airborne radar surveys were acquired by the Alfred Wegener Institute to investigate the morphology of the bedrock surface beneath the ice. The results of this dataset were combined with existing data acquired by NASA as part of their Program for Arctic Regional Climate Assessment and Operation IceBridge. A circular depression was evident in the bedrock surface, which coincides closely with a circular feature on the ice surface. Fieldwork was also carried out at the margin of the ice sheet in the summer of 2016 and evidence of an impact structure was found in sediment samples taken from the river draining the crater. [1]
The circular depression is about 31 km across and has a well-defined rim. The rim-to-floor depth is about 320 m and a broad central uplift has been identified with a prominence of 50 m. Two sub-glacial channels cut through the southeastern rim becoming poorly defined within the depression, before a single channel cuts the northwestern rim, carrying the outflow river. [1]
Apart from the clearly-defined circular depression, the identification of the feature as an impact structure is based on field samples taken from fluvio-glacial sediments from the outwash deposits of the river that drains the crater. Initial samples from the 2016 fieldwork contained shocked quartz grains with multiple planar deformation features (PDFs). The observed orientation of the PDFs is consistent with a high pressure origin. Further analysis of samples taken in 2019 identified clasts of melt rock, containing shocked zircon grains. [2]
Argon-argon dating was used on quartz grains found in samples of fluvio-glacial sand. Grains were identified as probable melted quartz based on shape and colour. The resulting Ar-Ar age spectra gave saddle-shaped patterns for 29 out of the 50 grains. No well-developed plateau were seen in any of the samples but two gave "mini-plateaus" indicating Late Paleocene ages, consistent with the saddles from the other samples. [2]
Uranium-Lead dating was used on both undeformed and shocked zircon grains found within the identified melt rock clasts sampled during field work in 2019. Undeformed Zircons gave ages generally consistent with the age of the regional basement geology, which is mainly Paleoproterozoic. The shocked zircons show clear evidence of being affected by a younger event, with an overall discordant age distribution, interpreted as partial resetting with a well-developed concordant plateau at the younger ages, indicating an age of about 58 million years ago for the impact. Initial interpretations of the crater having a much younger age, during the Pleistocene led to it being associated with the Younger Dryas impact hypothesis. [1] The Late Paleocene age is not directly associated with any clear climatic effects. [2]
The nature of the impactor responsible for the observed impact structure has been derived from field samples, which suggest that the asteroid responsible was a strongly fractionated iron type. For the size of crater observed, an impactor of about 1.5 km across is indicated. [1]
An impact crater is a circular depression in the surface of a solid astronomical body formed by the hypervelocity impact of a smaller object. In contrast to volcanic craters, which result from explosion or internal collapse, impact craters typically have raised rims and floors that are lower in elevation than the surrounding terrain. Impact craters range in size from microscopic craters seen on lunar rocks returned by the Apollo Program to simple bowl-shaped depressions and vast, complex, multi-ringed impact basins. Meteor Crater is a well-known example of a small impact crater on Earth.
The Nördlinger Ries is an impact crater and large circular depression in western Bavaria and eastern Baden-Württemberg. It is located north of the Danube in the district of Donau-Ries. The city of Nördlingen is located within the depression, about 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) south-west of its centre.
The Boltysh crater or Bovtyshka crater is a buried impact crater in the Kirovohrad Oblast of Ukraine, near the village of Bovtyshka. The crater is 24 kilometres (15 mi) in diameter and its age of 65.39 ± 0.14/0.16 million years, based on argon-argon dating techniques, less than 1 million years younger than Chicxulub crater in Mexico and the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary. The Chicxulub impact is believed to have caused the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous period, which included the extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs. The Boltysh crater is currently thought to be unrelated to the Chicxulub impact, and to have not generated major global environmental effects.
Keurusselkä is a lake in Central Finland between the towns of Keuruu to the north and Mänttä to the south. It covers an area of 117.3 km2 (45.3 sq mi). Its average depth is 6.4 m (21 ft) with a maximum depth of 40 m (130 ft). The surface lies at 105.4 m (346 ft) above sea level. The lake is 27 km (17 mi) long and is a part of the Kokemäenjoki water system. Keurusselkä gained international publicity in 2004 when a pair of amateur geologists discovered an ancient impact structure on the western shore of the lake.
Lappajärvi is a lake in Finland, in the municipalities of Lappajärvi, Alajärvi and Vimpeli. It is formed in a 23 km (14 mi) wide, partly eroded meteorite impact crater. The lake is part of Ähtävänjoki basin together with Lake Evijärvi that is located downstream (north) of it.
Riachão Ring is a meteorite impact crater in Brazil. It lies within the Parnaíba Basin. It is 4.5 kilometres (2.8 mi) in diameter and the age is estimated to be less than 200 million years. The crater is exposed at the surface.
Vargeão Dome is a meteorite crater in Santa Catarina State, Brazil, straddling the municipalities of Vargeão, Faxinal dos Guedes, and Passos Maia.
The Yarrabubba impact structure is the eroded remnant of an impact crater, situated in the northern Yilgarn Craton near Yarrabubba Station between the towns of Sandstone and Meekatharra, Mid West Western Australia. With an age of 2.229 billion years, it is the oldest known impact structure on Earth.
Plucking, also referred to as quarrying, is a glacial phenomenon that is responsible for the weathering and erosion of pieces of bedrock, especially large "joint blocks". This occurs in a type of glacier called a "valley glacier". As a glacier moves down a valley, friction causes the basal ice of the glacier to melt and infiltrate joints (cracks) in the bedrock. The freezing and thawing action of the ice enlarges, widens, or causes further cracks in the bedrock as it changes volume across the ice/water phase transition, gradually loosening the rock between the joints. This produces large chunks of rock called joint blocks. Eventually these joint blocks come loose and become trapped in the glacier.

Fluvioglacial landforms or glaciofluvial landforms are those that result from the associated erosion and deposition of sediments caused by glacial meltwater. Glaciers contain suspended sediment loads, much of which is initially picked up from the underlying landmass. Landforms are shaped by glacial erosion through processes such as glacial quarrying, abrasion, and meltwater. Glacial meltwater contributes to the erosion of bedrock through both mechanical and chemical processes. Fluvio-glacial processes can occur on the surface and within the glacier. The deposits that happen within the glacier are revealed after the entire glacier melts or partially retreats. Fluvio-glacial landforms and erosional surfaces include: outwash plains, kames, kame terraces, kettle holes, eskers, varves, and proglacial lakes.
The Stac Fada Member is a distinctive layer towards the top of the Mesoproterozoic Bay of Stoer Formation, part of the Stoer Group in northwest Scotland. This rock unit is generally 10 to 15 metres thick and is made of sandstone that contains accretionary lapilli and many dark green glassy fragments of mafic composition.

The Charity Shoal crater is a 1.2–1.4 kilometers (0.75–0.87 mi) in diameter circular feature that lies submerged beneath the northeast end of Lake Ontario about 12 kilometers (7.5 mi) southwest of Wolfe Island, and 25 kilometers (16 mi) south of Kingston, Ontario at about latitude 44° 02′ N and longitude 76° 29′ W. It is hypothesized to be a Middle Ordovician impact crater from about 460 million years ago.
The Corossol structure, which is also known as the Corossol crater, is a circular, 4.3-by-3.9-kilometre in diameter, underwater bedrock feature that is exposed on the gulf floor of the northwestern Gulf of Saint Lawrence 20-kilometre (12 mi) offshore of the city of Sept-Îles, Quebec, in eastern Canada. It is hypothesized to be a possible pre-Pleistocene, extraterrestrial impact structure. It lies underwater at a depth of 40–208-metre (131–682 ft). This underwater feature was found during the study of high-resolution bathymetric and sub-bottom profiler data collected south of the city of Sept-Iles in the northwestern Gulf of Saint Lawrence.
Bloody Creek crater, which is also known as the Bloody Creek structure, is a 420-by-350-meter in diameter elliptical feature that is located in southwestern Nova Scotia, Canada. It is argued to be either a possible extraterrestrial impact crater or an impact structure. It lies between Bridgetown and West Dalhousie, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, where the Bloody Creek structure straddles what was once a stretch of Bloody Creek. It also is informally known as the Astrid crater.
Padvarninkai meteorite is a meteorite that fell on 9 February 1929 near the village of Padvarninkai located near Andrioniškis, Anykščiai District Municipality, Lithuania. It is a rare eucrite that contains maskelynite and is highly shocked.
Hiawatha Glacier is a glacier in northwest Greenland, with its terminus in Inglefield Land. It was mapped in 1922 by Lauge Koch, who noted that the glacier tongue extended into Lake Alida. Hiawatha Glacier attracted attention in 2018 because of the discovery of a crater beneath the surface of the ice sheet in the area. A publication noted in 1952 that Hiawatha Glacier had been retreating since 1920.
Lunar Sample 14321, better known as "Big Bertha", is a lunar sample containing an embedded Earth-origin meteorite collected on the 1971 Apollo 14 mission. It was found in the Fra Mauro region of the Moon. Big Bertha is the first discovered meteorite from Earth, and the embedded meteorite portion is the oldest known Earth rock. At 8.998 kg (19.84 lb), this breccia rock is the third largest Moon sample returned during the Apollo program, behind Big Muley and Great Scott.
