Homo juluensis is an extinct species of archaic human from the Middle Pleistocene of China which encompasses Xujiayao, Xuchang Man, Penghu 1, and possibly the Denisovans.
The species classification of archaic humans during the Middle Pleistocene has always been a controversial topic, commonly referred to as "the muddle in the middle". In mainland East Asia, the early Middle Pleistocene was home to Homo erectus — best exemplified regionally by the Peking Man — but as the age continues, the anatomy of archaic human fossils becomes highly variable, with traits reminiscent of the earlier H. erectus but also H. heidelbergensis or modern humans. Historically, they have been characterized as hybrids of the indigenous H. erectus and newcomers from the west, an undescribed species, or multiple different species; and classified as H. heidelbergensis, archaic H. sapiens, or simply Middle Pleistocene Homo. Genetic data also identifies an enigmatic population referred to as the "Denisovans" which were apparently dispersed across East Asia and interbred with modern humans and Neanderthals. [2] [3]
In 2024, Chinese palaeoanthropologist Xiujie Wu and Korean-American anthropologist Christopher Bae erected a new species, H. juluensis (meaning "large-headed"), to house the Denisovans (specifically the Xiahe mandible), Penghu 1, and remains from Xujiayao and Xuchang. They made the Xujiayao material the holotype and Xuchang the paratype. [4] Japanese anthropologist Yousuke Kaifu and American paleoanthropologist Sheela Athreya suggested that the Hexian material may be a descendant of Xuchang and belong to the same population. Though they agreed that Hexian, Penghu 1, and Xiahe group well together, they questioned the inclusion of the Denisovans, since only the mandibular ramus (the part of the jaw that goes up to connect with the skull) is preserved in the Xujiayao remains, but only the mandibular body is preserved by the Xiahe mandible, making direct anatomical comparisons with the holotype material impossible. The species joins a larger body of East Asian Homo species which have been erected in the 21st century: the insular H. floresiensis and H. luzonensis , and the Chinese H. longi (represented by a skull from Harbin, the Dali Man, and Jinniushan Man according to Bae). It has further been debated if the Dali Man should be the basis for another unique species, "H. daliensis", and the Chinese Maba Man and Indian Narmada Man as another unique species or Asian representatives of Neanderthals. The Xujiayao and Xuchang material are known for their large skulls. [2] Xu and Bae distinguished H. juluensis by a low and wide skull, large brain size (over 1,000 cc), a small and inward mastoid part of the temporal bone, a depression over the parietal bone, defined temporal lines, a high squamous part of temporal bone, an ovoid ear canal, a Neanderthal-like bony labyrinth (in the ear), a weak occipital torus (bar-like projection at the back of the skull), large teeth, shovel-shaped incisors, and a wide mandibular ramus (the part of the jaw that goes up to connect with the skull). Homo heidelbergensis is an extinct species or subspecies of archaic human which existed from around 600,000 to 300,000 years ago, during the Middle Pleistocene. Homo heidelbergensis was widely considered the most recent common ancestor of modern humans and Neanderthals, but this view has been increasingly disputed since the late 2010s.
Homo is a genus of great ape that emerged from the genus Australopithecus and encompasses only a single extant species, Homo sapiens, along with a number of extinct species classified as either ancestral or closely related to modern humans; these include Homo erectus and Homo neanderthalensis. The oldest member of the genus is Homo habilis, with records of just over 2 million years ago. Homo, together with the genus Paranthropus, is probably most closely related to the species Australopithecus africanus within Australopithecus. The closest living relatives of Homo are of the genus Pan, with the ancestors of Pan and Homo estimated to have diverged around 5.7-11 million years ago during the Late Miocene.
Ceprano Man, Argil, and Ceprano Calvarium, is a Middle Pleistocene archaic human fossil, a single skull cap (calvarium), accidentally unearthed in a highway construction project in 1994 near Ceprano in the Province of Frosinone, Italy. It was initially considered Homo cepranensis, Homo erectus, or possibly Homo antecessor; but in recent studies, most regard it either as a form of Homo heidelbergensis sharing affinities with African forms, or an early morph of Neanderthal.

The Denisovans or Denisova hominins are an extinct species or subspecies of archaic human that ranged across Asia during the Lower and Middle Paleolithic, and lived, based on current evidence, from 285 to 25 thousand years ago. Denisovans are known from few physical remains; consequently, most of what is known about them comes from DNA evidence. No formal species name has been established pending more complete fossil material.
Tautavel Man refers to the archaic humans which—from approximately 550,000 to 400,000 years ago—inhabited the Caune de l’Arago, a limestone cave in Tautavel, France. They are generally grouped as part of a long and highly variable lineage of transitional morphs which inhabited the Middle Pleistocene of Europe, and would eventually evolve into the Neanderthals. They have been variably assigned to either H. (s.?) heidelbergensis, or as a European subspecies of H. erectus as H. e. tautavelensis. The skull is reconstructed based on the specimens Arago 21 and 47, and it is, to a degree, more characteristic of what might be considered a typical H. erectus morphology than a typical H. heidelbergensis morphology. The brain capacity is 1,166 cc. They seem to have had an overall robust skeleton. Average height may have been 166 cm.
The Red Deer Cave people were a prehistoric population of modern humans known from bones dated to between about 17,830 to c. 11,500 years ago, found in Red Deer Cave and Longlin Cave in Yunnan and Guangxi Provinces, in Southwest China.
Several expansions of populations of archaic humans out of Africa and throughout Eurasia took place in the course of the Lower Paleolithic, and into the beginning Middle Paleolithic, between about 2.1 million and 0.2 million years ago (Ma). These expansions are collectively known as Out of Africa I, in contrast to the expansion of Homo sapiens (anatomically modern humans) into Eurasia, which may have begun shortly after 0.2 million years ago.
Penghu 1 is a fossil jaw (mandible) belonging to an extinct hominin species of the genus Homo. It was collected from seafloor sediments of the Penghu Channel off the coast of Taiwan, dating to sometime in the Middle Pleistocene or Late Pleistocene. The precise classification of the mandible is disputed. Some believe it to be the fossil of a H. erectus, an archaic H. sapiens or possibly a Denisovan.
Homo naledi is an extinct species of archaic human discovered in 2013 in the Rising Star Cave system, Gauteng province, South Africa, dating to the Middle Pleistocene 335,000–236,000 years ago. The initial discovery comprises 1,550 specimens of bone, representing 737 different skeletal elements, and at least 15 different individuals. Despite this exceptionally high number of specimens, their classification with other Homo species remains unclear.
Xujiayao, located in the Nihewan Basin in China, is an early Late Pleistocene paleoanthropological site famous for its archaic hominin fossils.
Homo longi is an extinct species of archaic human identified from a nearly complete skull, nicknamed 'Dragon Man', from Harbin on the Northeast China Plain, dating to at minimum 146,000 years ago during the Middle Pleistocene. The skull was discovered in 1933 along the Songhua River while the Dongjiang Bridge was under construction for the Manchukuo National Railway. Due to a tumultuous wartime atmosphere, it was hidden and only brought to paleoanthropologists in 2018. H. longi has been hypothesized to be the same species as the Denisovans, but this cannot be confirmed without genetic testing.
The Salé cranium is a pathological specimen of enigmatic Middle Pleistocene hominin discovered from Salé, Morocco by quarrymen in 1971. Since its discovery, the specimen has variously been classified as Homo sapiens, Homo erectus, Homo rhodesiensis/bodoensis, or Homo heidelbergensis. Its pathological condition and mosaic anatomy has proved difficult to classify. It was discovered with few faunal fossils and no lithics, tentatively dated to 400 ka by some sources.
The Narmada Human, originally the Narmada Man, is a species of extinct human that lived in central India during the Middle and Late Pleistocene. From a skull cup discovered from the bank of the Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh in 1982, the discoverer, Arun Sonakia classified it was an archaic human and gave the name Narmada Man, with the scientific name H. erectus narmadensis. Analysis of additional fossils from the same location in 1997 indicated that the individual could be a female, hence, a revised name, Narmada Human, was introduced. It remains the oldest human species in India.
