I Can See Your Voice is a British television mystery music game show based on the South Korean programme of the same name. It premiered on BBC One on 10 April 2021, [1] [2] and has been aired for two series.

Contents

Gameplay

Format

Presented with a group of six "mystery singers", a guest artist and a group of two contestants must attempt to eliminate bad singers from the group without ever hearing them sing, assisted by clues and a celebrity panel over the course of four rounds. At the end of a game, the last remaining mystery singer is revealed as either good or bad by means of a duet between them and one of the guest artists. [3]

If the singer is good, the contestants win £10,000; if the singer is bad, the same amount is given to the bad singer instead.

Rounds

Visual round

  • First Impressions
s1: The guest artist and contestants are given some time to observe and examine each mystery singer based on their appearance.

Lip sync round

  • Lip Sync Challenge
s1–2: Each mystery singer performs a lip sync to a song; good singers mime to a recording of their own, while bad singers mime to a recording by someone else.

Evidence rounds

  • Unlock my Life
s1–2: The guest artist and contestants are presented with a video package chronicling the daily lives by one of the mystery singers.
  • Home Truths
s2: The guest artist and contestants "tour" one of the remaining mystery singer's homes for clues (which may include red herrings) for 60 seconds.

Interrogation round

  • Interrogation
s1–2: The guest artist and contestants must choose one mystery singer to question with. The host is given a list of 15 questions shown on the screen and the artist can ask any of 15 questions within the 30 second time limit.

Background

Production and development

A local adaptation of I Can See Your Voice in the United Kingdom was first mentioned, as per press release by CJ ENM at the time of its ongoing (South Korean) sixth season in March 2019; [4] this was subsequently confirmed by the BBC in July 2020, [5] including with production duties assigned by Fremantle's units, Naked and Thames. [6] [7]

Filming

Filming of the show took place at The Maidstone Studios (as part of Vinters Park) in Maidstone, Kent. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it has filmed under implementing health and safety protocols only in the first series. [8]

The I Can See Your Voice mini-segment at the 42nd appeal show of the annual Children in Need charity broadcast was filmed at Dock10 (as part of MediaCityUK) in Salford, Greater Manchester. [9]

Broadcast history

I Can See Your Voice debuted on 10 April 2021, a day after the death of Prince Philip. [1] [2] During its first series airings, the show was already renewed for a second series [10] [11] that premiered on 15 October 2022. [12] [13] The BBC has formally announced in February 2023 to discontinue the show after commissioning two series. [14] [15]

Special episodes

In 42nd appeal show of the annual Children in Need charity airings on 19 November 2021, a mini-segment of I Can See Your Voice featured newsreader Kate Silverton, Final Score host Jason Mohammad, and BBC Breakfast presenter (also bad singer) Mike Bushell as mystery singers. [16] [17]

As a prelude to the second series, Leona Lewis played in the holiday special with former rhythmic gymnast Gabby Logan as a contestant on the Christmas Eve of 2021. [18] [19]
