In the Fishtank 9 is an album of songs by alternative rock bands Sonic Youth,the Instant Composers Pool Orchestra,and the Ex. It was released in 2001 on the Konkurrent label.
Thom Jurek of AllMusic praised the collaboration as "a wonder",praising the fact that "everyone participates in creating something fresh and new,without anybody getting in anybody else's way. The spirit of cooperation and the excitement of discovery here are both prescient. The result is neither rock nor jazz,but a free-form music that dispenses with formality and ego and goes for the heart of the thing itself." He concludes:"For nearly a half-hour,the listener gets to eavesdrop on the purest kind of music-making by those dedicated to nothing else than the pursuit of its creation." [1]

Sonic Youth was an American rock band based in New York City and formed in 1981. Founding members Kim Gordon,Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo remained together for the entire history of the band,while Steve Shelley (drums) followed a series of short-term drummers in 1985,rounding out the core line-up. Jim O'Rourke was also a member of the band from 1999 to 2005,and Mark Ibold was a member from 2006 to 2011.
Thurston Joseph Moore is an American guitarist,singer and songwriter best known as a member of the rock band Sonic Youth. He has also participated in many solo and group collaborations outside Sonic Youth,as well as running the Ecstatic Peace! record label. Moore was ranked 34th in Rolling Stone's 2004 edition of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".
Daydream Nation is the fifth studio album by American alternative rock band Sonic Youth,released on October 18,1988. The band recorded the album between July and August 1988 at Greene St. Recording in New York City,and it was released by Enigma Records as a double album.
A Thousand Leaves is the tenth studio album by American rock band Sonic Youth,released on CD and cassette on May 12,1998,by DGC Records. A double-LP vinyl issue had been released three weeks earlier on My So Called Records. It was the band's first album recorded at their own studio in Lower Manhattan,which was built with the money they had made at the 1995 Lollapalooza festival. In the Fishtank was a series of EPs released by Konkurrent,an independent music distributor in the Netherlands. For the project,Konkurrent invited one or two bands to record and gave them two days studio time. The first four releases were recorded by individual bands,but eight of the last ten of them were the result of two bands teaming up to record. There were plans for more according to their website,but no new releases have come since ITF 15 in 2009.

Joggers and Smoggers is a double album by punk artists The Ex,released in 1989 as a double vinyl record album,and issued as a double CD in 1992. It is the first of the Ex's albums to feature extensive use of improvisation and instruments outside of the standard guitar/bass/drums arrangement of punk rock,as well as great numbers of international guest musicians,most notably New York's Sonic Youth,Glasgow's Dog Faced Hermans,Amsterdam's Instant Composers Pool,as well as numerous folk musicians from a variety of European and Middle Eastern traditions. The album marked a turning point in The Ex's artistry,foreshadowing many collaborations and delvings into avant-garde,experimental,improvisational,folk and world music that the band would mix with their abrasive trademark post-punk sound in the 20 years to come.
In the Fishtank 14 is a collaborative EP from Isis and Aereogramme. It is the fourteenth installment of the collaboration project by Konkurrent,and was released in September 2006. Rock Sound ranked it as the 39th best album of 2006 in its yearly rundown.

"Kool Thing" is a song by American rock band Sonic Youth,released in June 1990 in the United States and September 1990 in Europe,as the first single from their sixth studio album Goo. The song was inspired by an interview bassist/singer Kim Gordon conducted with LL Cool J for Spin. Although he is never mentioned by name,the song's lyrics contain several references to LL Cool J. Gordon's lyrics make reference to several of the rapper's works,including the single "I Can't Live Without My Radio" and the album Walking with a Panther. She also repeats the line "I don't think so",which appears in LL Cool J's "Going Back to Cali". Chuck D also contributed spoken vocals to the song.

Dirty Three are an Australian instrumental rock band,consisting of Warren Ellis,Mick Turner and Jim White (drums),which formed in 1992. Australian rock music historian Ian McFarlane described them as providing a "rumbling,dynamic sound incorporated open-ended,improvisational,electric rock ... minus the jazz-rock histrionics". In October 2010,Ocean Songs was listed in the book 100 Best Australian Albums.
In the Fishtank 1 is an EP by Vancouver punk rock band Nomeansno. Recording during the band's 1996 European tour,it was the first release in the In the Fishtank series,in which the Netherlands-based De Konkurrent label provided bands with two days of studio recording time and released the final results.
