Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) is a deemed-to-be-university, established on 17 August 1965, Delhi. The Institute has five regional centers across India. The IIMC is an autonomous society under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. [2] The institute offers PG Diploma courses in media subjects like Journalism (Hindi, English, Odia, Urdu, Marathi and Malayalam), Radio and Television, Advertising & Public Relations and Digital Media. On Jan 31, 2024, the Institute has been granted Deemed university status. [3]

History

The Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) was established on August 17, 1965, by the central government. It was an initiative of the Minister for Information and Broadcasting. Then minister of this department, Smt. Indira Gandhi attended the inauguration. [4]

Academics

IIMC teaches media disciplines including print journalism, photo journalism, radio journalism, television journalism, English journalism, Hindi journalism, Urdu journalism, development communication, communication research, advertising and public relations and digital media. [5]

Admission to these courses is through an All India Entrance Examination followed by group discussions and interviews.

It also offers a diploma course in Development Journalism for non-aligned and developing countries. [6] The institute was originally set up to provide training to the officers of the Indian Information Service. The institute also conducts a number of specialized short-term courses each year to meet the training needs of media personnel working in government and public sector organisations.

IIMC Alumni Association (IIMCAA) meets every year at its annual event, Connections. [12] [13] [14] Held in various cities across India and worldwide [15] in chapters, alumni regularly meet and network.

Radhika Roy is an Indian journalist who is the founder and former executive co-chairperson of NDTV. She was the managing director of the company between 1998 and 2011. The company started as a news production house and became the first independent news broadcaster in India. Roy began her career in journalism at The Indian Express and worked for a period of time at the India Today magazine before becoming the founder of NDTV.

Umesh Upadhyay was an Indian television journalist, author and media executive. Critics say that his book “Western Media Narratives on India – Gandhi to Modi” exposes the dubiousness of the anti-India agenda of the foreign media. He was also a freelance writer, an independent media consultant and analyst. Earlier he worked as president and director of media at Reliance Industries Limited, prior to which he was President of News at Network 18.

Mandeep Punia is a freelance journalist based in Haryana. He was arrested by Delhi Police during 2020–2021 Indian farmers' protest, India. He was sent to Tihar Jail for 14 day. Indian journalists protested against Punia's arrest in the front of Delhi Police headquarter.
