Dhenkanal is a town and a municipality in Dhenkanal district in the state of Odisha, India.

Dhenkanal is at 20°40′N85°36′E / 20.67°N 85.6°E / 20.67; 85.6 . [1] It has an average elevation of 80 metres (262 feet).

Demographics

As per the 2011 India census, [2] Dhenkanal had a population of 67,414. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Dhenkanal has an average literacy rate of 79%, higher than the national average of 59.5%. Male literacy is 84% and female literacy is 74%. In Dhenkanal, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The Pragati Legislature Party(Also called Pragati Dal) was a political grouping in the Legislative Assembly of the Indian state Orissa. PLP was formed in 1973 by the Utkal Congress, Swatantra Party and others. The PLP leader Biju Patnaik, was elected as the Leader of the Opposition of the Assembly on February 9, 1973. His tenure as Leader of Opposition lasted until March 3 the same year. On that date President's Rule was introduced in the state.

Dhenkanal State was one of the princely states of India during the period of the British Raj. The area of the former state is now referred to as Dhenkanal district, Odisha, with Dhenkanal town as its district headquarters.

Tathagata Satpathy was a member of the 12th, 14th, 15th and 16th Lok Sabha of India. He represented the Dhenkanal constituency of Odisha, and was re-elected for the fourth time in 2014. He was a member of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) political party, and the party's chief whip in the Lok Sabha. He took voluntary retirement from politics in March 2019. He is not an active politician ever since.

Kathantara is a 2007 Indian Oriya language disaster film directed by Himansu Khatua, a story of tribulations of the 1999 Odisha cyclone. Much before the Tsunami became a household name all over the world, the coastal belts of Orissa were hit by what has come to be known as the "Super Cyclone" that killed more than 10,000 people and rendered still more homeless.

Enḍuri Piṭhā, also known as Haḷadi Patra Piṭhā, is a variety of pitha made in the Indian state of Odisha mostly in the northern, eastern and central region. Ingredients are turmeric leaves, black gram, rice flour, coconut or Chhena, jaggery, black pepper. Enduri is mostly prepared during Prathamastami and Manabasa Gurubara. It is a light snack and has laxative effect because of the turmeric leaves that are used to wrap the pitha. Traditionally, enduri used to be made by steaming in large earthen pots. Enduri is one of the many other pithas offered to Jagannath in the Jagannath Temple, Puri for "Sakala dhupa" (breakfast).

Satapathy is an Indian surname, found among Utkala Brahmins of Odisha. Alternative spellings include Satpathi, Satpati, Satpathy and Shatapathy.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Suparno Satpathy</span> Indian politician, social activist

Suparno Satpathy is a socio-political leader from the state of Odisha. He is the great-grandson of Padma Bhushan Dr. Kalindi Charan Panigrahi and the grand son of Legendary Smt. Nandini Satpathy. He is the son of Nachiketa Satapathy.

Brigadier Kamakhya Prasad Singh Deo AVSM, the scion of Dhenkanal is a former Member of Parliament and a retired Indian Territorial Army officer. He was a member of the 4th, 7th, 8th, 10th, 11th and 13th Lok Sabha. He was first elected to Lok Sabha in 1967 representing Swatantra Party.

Gati Krushna Misra was the seventh Chief Justice of Orissa High Court, from 1 May 1969 to 30 October 1975. On 1 May 1969, he was elevated to the post of Chief Justice of Orissa High Court and worked as such for more than six years.

Kalpesh Satyendra Jhaveri is an Indian Judge and former Chief Justice of Orissa High Court. He is also former Judge of Rajasthan High Court and Gujarat High Court.

Brajanath Badajena was an Odia poet best known for his historical ballad Samara Taranga. He was born in Dhenkanal. Brajanath was patronized by several local rulers. His work was Samara Taranga appreciated the king of Dhenkanal for which he was given the title of Badajena.
