Dhenkanal district is one of the centrally located districts in Odisha. It lies between Longitude: 85° 58' to 86° 2' East and Latitude: 20° 29' to 21° 11' North. The nearest airport is Biju Patnaik Airport located at a distance of 52.12 Km. It is bordered by Kendujhar and Angul districts to the north, Jajpur district to the east, Cuttack district to the south and Angul district to the west.
The district comprises mainly plains, however there are several discontinuous hill ranges in the district and along its southern border. The Brahmani River is the main river of the district.

According to the 2011 census Dhenkanal district has a population of 1,192,811, [1] roughly equal to the nation of Timor-Leste [4] or the US state of Rhode Island. [5] This gives it a ranking of 400th in India (out of a total of 640). [1] The district has a population density of 268 inhabitants per square kilometre (690/sq mi) . [1] Its population growth rate over the decade 2001–2011 was 11.82%. [1] Dhenkanal has a sex ratio of 947 females for every 1000 males, [1] and a literacy rate of 79.41%. 9.85% of the population lives in urban areas. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes made up 19.62% and 13.59% of the population respectively. [1]
At the time of the 2011 Census of India, 96.17% of the population in the district spoke Odia, 1.24% Munda, 0.91% Santali and 0.48% Juang as their first language. [6]
Dhenkanal is home to the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, the only institute in Odisha for the study of journalism and mass communication.

Cuttack district is one of the 30 districts of Odisha state in India. It is located in the coastal part of the state and its administrative headquarters are located in the city of Cuttack. As of 2011 Census, after Ganjam, it is the second most populous district of Odisha, with a population of 2,624,470. The name is an anglicized form of Kataka or Katak meaning Fort – referring to the Barabati Fort. The district is bisected by the river Mahanadi and its numerous distributaries and occupies a large portion of the river's delta. It is bounded by the Angul, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh and Khurda districts to the west while its southern and eastern boundaries touch Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara and Jajpur districts.
Gajapati district is a district of Odisha State in India. It was created from Ganjam District on 2 October, 1992. As of 2011 it is the third least populous district of Odisha, after Debagarh and Boudh. Gajapati district was named after Krushna Chandra Gajapati Narayan Deb, the King of the Paralakhemundi estate and the first Prime Minister of Orissa, who is remembered for his contribution in the formation of a separate state, and inclusion of his estate in Odisha. The district headquarters at Paralakhemundi, formerly a Zamindari, has been clustered within a radius of approximately 5 kilometers around the geometric centre of Paralakhemundi.
