Joshua Anthony "Josh" Hose, OAM (born 1 December 1986) is a wheelchair rugby player. He has won gold medals at the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Paralympics and competed at the 2020 Summer Paralympics. [1] [2]
Joshua Anthony Hose was born on 1 December 1986 in Camperdown, Victoria. [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] On 26 January 2005 (Australia Day), he was involved in a car accident [6] that left him a C6 – C7 Paraplegic; he dislocated a vertebra when the roof of his car collapsed after a rollover. [4] He ended up spending two weeks in a medically induced coma during his recovery. [8] His subsequent paralysis is from the waist down. [8] Growing up, he played cricket, football and basketball. [8] He moved to Melbourne in mid-2008, [8] [9] He attended Victoria University where he completed Certificate IV in Disability Studies. [4] [3] and works as a motivational speaker. [3] In 2021, he is a Peer Support Project Officer with AQA Victoria Ltd.
Hose is a 3.0 point wheelchair rugby player. [3] [5] He is a member of Wheelchair Sports Australia, [3] the Victoria state wheelchair rugby team, [4] and plays for the Victorian Thunder in the National Wheelchair Rugby League. [10] As of 2012 [update] , he has a scholarship with the Victorian Institute of Sport [11] and was also supported by Victoria's Disability Sport and Recreation. [12] He trains at the Victorian Institute of Sport and in the cities of Kew, Caroline Springs and Box Hill. [3]
Hose watched the 2008 Summer Paralympics wheelchair rugby matches and some local games, and it inspired him to take up the sport after seeing an opportunity to play while rehabbing in Victoria. [6] [8]
Hose made his national team debut in 2009 at the Asia Oceania championships, [6] [3] after being selected for the team in May. [8] He played in the 2010 World Championships [6] [3] where Australia finished second. [4] That year, he also represented Australia at the 4 Nations event and the Canada Cup. [3] In 2011, Hose was regularly flying between Brisbane and Melbourne to train with the national team in Brisbane. [9]
Hose trained with the national team in 2012 at the Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre. [13] [14] In May 2012, he participated in a test series against Japan in Sydney. [15] [16] He was part of the Australian team at the 2012 Canada Cup. [16] His team finished first at the London hosted 2012 Paralympic Test Event. [6] He was selected to represent Australia at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in wheelchair rugby [5] [17] [18] in May 2012 before the start of the Opening Ceremony of the International Wheelchair Rugby Test Series. [6] The Games were his first. [6] Going into London, his team was ranked second in the world behind the United States. [6] He was part of the team that won the gold medal. [19] The Australian team went through the five-day tournament undefeated. [20] He was a member of the Australian team that won its first world championship gold medal at the 2014 World Wheelchair Rugby Championships at Odense, Denmark. .
He was a member of the team that retained its gold medal at the 2016 Rio Paralympics after defeating the United States 59–58 in the final. [21]
At the 2020 Summer Paralympics, the Steelers finished fourth after being defeated by Japan 52–60 in the bronze medal game.COVID travel restrictions led to Steelers not having a team training since March 2020 prior to Tokyo. [22]
He was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in the 2014 Australia Day Honours "for service to sport as a Gold Medallist at the London 2012 Paralympic Games." [7]
Hose announced his retirement from the Steelers in November 2021. [23]
Dylan Martin Alcott, is an Australian former wheelchair tennis player, former wheelchair basketball player, radio host and motivational speaker. Alcott was a member of the Australia men's national wheelchair basketball team, known colloquially as the Australian "Rollers". At the age of 17, he became the youngest Rollers gold medal winner, at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, and was the youngest to compete in the wheelchair basketball competition. In 2014, he returned to wheelchair tennis with the aim of participating at the 2016 Rio Paralympics, at which he won gold medals in the Men's Quad Singles and Doubles. He was named the 2016 Australian Paralympian of the Year due to his outstanding achievements at Rio.
Australia competed at the 2012 Summer Paralympics Games in London, United Kingdom, from 29 August to 9 September 2012. The London Games were the biggest Games with 164 nations participating, 19 more than in the 2008 Beijing Paralympic. Australia has participated at every Summer Paralympic Games and hosted the 2000 Sydney Games. As such, the 2000 Sydney Games, regarded as one of the more successful Games, became a point-of-reference and an inspiration in the development of the 2012 London Games.

He won a silver medal as an athlete at the 2000 Sydney Games and as the head coach at the 2008 Beijing Games in the mixed wheelchair rugby event. He is the head coach of the Australian Wheelchair Rugby team known as the Australian Steelers.

Melissa Tapper is an Australian table tennis player. After competing at the 2012 Summer Paralympics, she represented Australia at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in elite non-Paralympic competition. Jannik Blair is a 1 point wheelchair basketball player who has played for the University of Missouri and the National Wheelchair Basketball League Dandenong Rangers.
