Louise Ellery (born 4 January 1977) is an Australian Paralympic track and field athlete, Commonwealth Games gold medalist and former world record holder in F32 Shot put for elite athletes with a disability. At the 2016 Rio Paralympics, she won a bronze medal. [1] [2]
Ellery was born in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. [3] She suffered a Traumatic brain injury following a car crash in 1998. She competes in the F32 class (severe to moderate quadriplegia, but with athletes usually able to functionally propel a manual wheelchair). In Sydney in 2005, Ellery broke the world record in seated shot put at the National Championships.
Just 3 days before winning a bronze medal in the 2016 Rio Paralaympics, the now international multi-award winning short film, 'With Little Hope' was premiered. Ellery executive produced and wrote this film inspired by her personal experiences. It was released in 2017. [4]
At the 2004 Athletics Paralympics, she finished sixth in the Women's Shot Put F32-34/52-53. [5] She finished again in the Women's Shot Put F32-34/52-53 at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics. [5] At the 2012 London Games, she won the silver medal in the Women's Shot Put F32-34 with a throw of 5.90 m. She finished eighth in the Women's Club Throw F31/32/51. [5] At the 2016 Summer Paralympics, Ellery won Bronze in the Women's Shot Put F32 with a throw of 4.19. [1]
At the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships in Christchurch, she won the bronze medal in the Women's Shot Put F32-34 with a throw of 6.31m and finished fifth in the Women's Club Throw F31/32/51. She did not medal at the 2013 IPC Athletics World Championships in Lyon. [5] At the 2015 IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha, she won the bronze medal in the Women's Shot Put F32 with a throw of 4.53m. [6] At the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships in London, England, she finished eighth in the Women's Shot Put F32 with a throw of 4.31. [3]
Ellery won gold medal in the women's F32–34/52/53 shot put, as a competitor in the F32 class, again breaking the world record with a throw of 6.17 metres. This was Australia’s first gold medal in the track and field events at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games which took place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Delhi. [7]
In 2015/16, she has an ACT Academy of Sport scholarship. [8]
The 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships was held in Christchurch, New Zealand from January 21 to 30, 2011. Athletes with a disability competed, and the Championships was a qualifying event for the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
Maria Stamatoula is a Paralympian athlete from Greece competing mainly in F32 shot put and club throw events.
Hania Aidi is a Paralympian athlete from Tunisia competing mainly in category F54 javelin throw events. Aidi has competed at four consecutive Summer Paralympics, winning silver medals at three of the Games. She is also a three time World Championships winner medalist and has held the F54 javelin world record on numerous occasions throughout her career.
Katherine Proudfoot is a cerebral palsy athlete from Australia competing mainly in throwing events. She competed in the F36 classification at the 2008, 2012 and the 2016 Summer Paralympics, winning medals at each Game. Following a medical review request in early 2017, she now competes in seated throws in the F32 classification. At the 2017 Australian Athletics Championships she threw 7.04m in the Women's Shot Put Secured event, bettering the Women's F32 shot put world record mark of 6.55m.
Hamish Anderson MacDonald, OAM is an Australian Paralympic athlete. He was born in Melbourne and lives in Canberra. He has cerebral palsy. His achievements and advocacy have made him one of Australia's most respected Paralympians.
Jessica Gallagher is an Australian Paralympic alpine skier, track and field athlete, tandem cyclist and rower. She was Australia's second female Winter Paralympian, and the first Australian woman to win a medal at the Winter Paralympics at the 2010 Vancouver Games. She competed at the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, where she won a bronze medal in the Women's Giant Slalom Visually Impaired.
Todd Hodgetts, is an Australian athlete on the autism spectrum who won a gold medal at the 2012 London Paralympics and a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Paralympics, and also competed at the 2020 Summer Paralympics.
Rosemary Little is an Australian Paralympic athlete. She won a bronze medal in wheelchair racing at the 2012 Summer Paralympics, and has also competed in handcycling. She competed at the 2020 Summer Paralympics, her third Games, where switched from wheelchair racing to shot put.
Brydee Moore is an Australian athlete with cerebral palsy that competes in the shot put, discus and javelin. She won a silver medal at the 2015 IPC Athletics World Championships. She represented Australia at the 2016 Rio Paralympics in athletics.
Gemma Louise Prescott is a British Paralympian track and field athlete competing in F32 throwing events. Prescott represented England in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, taking the bronze medal in the SP shot put. She has represented the Great Britain team twice in the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing and the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London.
Maroua Brahmi is a Paralympic athlete from Tunisia competing mainly in category F32 throwing events. She is the 2016 Paralympic Champion in club throw category F32 and the F32 shot put.
The 2013 IPC Athletics World Championships was the biggest track and field competition for athletes with a disability since the 2012 Summer Paralympics. It was held in Lyon, France, and lasted from 20 to 28 July. Around 1,100 athletes competed, from 94 different countries. The event was held in the Stade du Rhône located at the Parc de Parilly in Vénissieux, in Lyon Metropolis.
Deepa Malik is an Indian athlete. She started her career at the age of 30. She is the first Indian woman to win a medal in Paralympic Games and won a silver medal at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in shot put. She also won gold in the F-53/54 Javelin event at the para athletic Grand Prix held in Dubai in 2018. She is currently the world number one in the F-53 category. She has won accolades for her participation in various adventure sports. She is associated with Himalayan Motorsports Association (H.M.A.) and Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (F.M.S.C.I.). She has undertaken an 8-day, 1,700-km drive in sub-zero temperatures which included a climb to 18,000 feet (5,500 m). It was – Raid De Himalaya. This journey covers many difficult paths including remote Himalayas, Leh, Shimla and Jammu.
Guy Nicholas Henly is an Australian Paralympic athlete. He currently competes in discus and shot put and has won medals at the 2013, and 2015, 2017 and 2019 World Para Athletics Championships. He represented Australia at the 2016 Rio Paralympics and 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.
Jayden Sawyer is an Australian para athlete who competes mainly in the F38 category in throwing events. He won has won gold and bronze medals at the World Para Athletics Championships. He competed at the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Summer Paralympics.
Claire Keefer is a short stature athlete from Australia. She represented Australia at the 2016 Rio Paralympics in athletics where she won a bronze medal. She has won a silver and bronze medal at the World Para Athletics Championships.
Holly Irene Robinson is a New Zealand para-athlete, primarily competing in the javelin throw. She represented New Zealand at the 2012, 2016 and 2020 Summer Paralympics, winning silver in 2016 and gold in 2020. At the 2016 Games, she was New Zealand's flagbearer for the opening ceremony.
Mounia Gasmi is a Paralympian athlete from Algeria competing mainly in F32 classification throwing events.
Sarah Edmiston is an Australian Paralympic athlete who specialises in the discus and shot put. At her first major international competition, she won the bronze medal in the Women's Discus F44 at the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships and followed this up with a silver medal in the same event at the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships. She also won the bronze medal in the Women's Discus F64 at the 2020 Summer Paralympics.
Mauricio Valencia is a Colombian Paralympic athlete with cerebral palsy. He represented Colombia at the Summer Paralympics in 2012, 2016 and 2021. At the 2016 Summer Paralympics, he won two medals: the gold medal in the men's javelin throw F34 event and the bronze medal in the men's shot put F34 event. In 2021, he won the silver medal in the men's javelin throw F34 event at the 2020 Summer Paralympics held in Tokyo, Japan.
