Kazipet Junction railway station (station code:- KZJ) [1] is located in Hanamkonda district of Telangana. It is a crucial railway junction connecting Northern and Southern India.

History

With the completion of the Kazipet–Balharshah link in 1929, Chennai was directly linked to Delhi. [2] [3]

The Wadi–Secunderabad line was built in 1874 with financing by the Nizam of Hyderabad. It later became part of Nizam's Guaranteed State Railway. In 1889, the main line of the Nizam's Guaranteed State Railway was extended to Vijayawada, then known as Bezwada. [4]

As of 1909, "From Wadi on the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, the Nizam's Guaranteed State Railway runs east to Warangal and then south-east towards Bezwada on the East Coast section of the Madras Railway." [5]

Electrification

The Dornakal–Kazipet sector was electrified in 1988–89, the Kazipet–Ramagundam sector in 1987–88 and the Kazipet–Secunderabad sector in 1991–93. [6]

Amenities

Kazipet railway station [7] has computerized reservation counters, retiring room, waiting room, vegetarian and non-vegetarian refreshments and book stall. [8]

Coal freight from Singareni, Kothagudem, Ramagundam, Bellampalli and Balharshah mines account for around 40 per cent of the goods traffic handled by the railways in the Kazipet–Balharshah sector. [9]

Developments

A new 201.04 kilometres (124.92 mi) railway line has been approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs between Balharshah Junction and Kazipet. The new line will be passing through Warangal, Ramagundam, Mancherial and Asifabad districts in Telangana, and through Chandrapur in Maharashtra. [10] This will facilitate both the passenger traffic and goods movement that include cement, coal and food. [11]

Loco sheds

Kazipet Diesel Loco Shed houses WDM-2, WDM-3A, WDG-3A and WDG-4 locos. Opened in 2006, Kazipet Electric Loco Shed houses 100 WAG-7 & 72 WAG-9 locos. There is a coaching maintenance depot at Kazipet. [12] Kazipet Junction diesel loco shed was selected to receive an international quality certificate in October 2017.

Nizam's Guaranteed State Railway (NGSR) was a railway company operating in India from 1879 to 1950. It was owned by the Nizams of Hyderabad State, and its full name was His Exalted Highness, The Nizam's Guaranteed State Railway. The company began with a line built privately by the HEH, the Nizam, which was owned and operated by the company under a guarantee from the Hyderabad State, much to the dismay of the British authorities. Capital for the line was raised by issuing redeemable mortgage debentures. The Nizam's railway was eventually consolidated with the Hyderabad-Godavari Valley Railway (HGVR). In 1951, both the NGSR and the HGVR were nationalised and merged into Indian Railways.

Ramagundam railway station Ramagundam railway station is the second busiest station in Kazipet–Balharshah section of Secunderabad division, and it is located in Peddapalli district of Telangana. The station is well connected by rail to all parts of India. Ninety-seven trains arrive at, or depart from, the station daily, transporting over 18,000 passengers daily to their destinations across the country, and also serves Ramagundam, Godavarikhani areas. It is under the jurisdiction of Secunderabad railway division of South Central Railway.

Bellampally, also spelled Bellampalli, is a railway station in Bellampalle, Telangana and falls under the Secunderabad railway division of the South Central Railway Zone of the Indian Railways. The station is categorized as a Non Suburban Grade- 5 station.
