Kudamurutti River a distributary of the Kaveri, is one of the five sacred rivers that flows in Thiruvaiyaru in the Thanjavur District of the state of Tamil Nadu, in southeastern India. [1] Kudamurutti River branches off from the Kaveri River at Tiruchirapalli. The ancient name of this river was Kaduvaai which was mentioned in Tevaram, Tamil Saivite devotional poetry. The river is related to the famous saint Sri Narayana Teertha who is believed to have attained enlightenment here. As it is believed to be a sacred river, River Kudamurutti is the Theertham of Tiruvalampozhil Temple. [2] There are many Temples located beside the river namely, Vishahareswara Temple, Kalyana Varadharaja Perumal Temple. Ranganatha, also known as Ranganathar, Rangan, Aranganathar, SriRanga, and Thenarangathan, is a Hindu deity with his origin in South India, serving as the chief deity of the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Srirangam. The deity is a resting form of Vishnu, recumbent on the great form of the serpent demigod Adishesha, the king of the serpents. His primary consort is the Goddess Lakshmi, also known as Ranganayaki. The Vishahareswara Temple is a temple to Shiva in the Thiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu, India. The temple was built in the early 9th century in the village of Kodandaramapuram, which later became part of Avanam Paruthiyur, situated on the banks of the Kudamurutti River, a distributary of the Kaveri. The presiding deity of this temple is a form of Shiva called Vishahareswarar, and his consort Prasanna Parvathy Devi. The temple today is an ancient heritage symbol of the village. The temple was one of the 108 Shiva temples built by Cholan Aditya Varman 1, on the banks of the Kaveri.
