LH 54-425 is a spectroscopic binary star system in the LH 54 OB association within the Large Magellanic Cloud in the constellation Dorado.
The OB association LH 54 was catalogued by astronomers Lucke and Hodge in 1970, listed as containing 18 member stars. It is associated with NGC 1955, part of the N51 HII region. [7] The brightness and colour of LH 54-425 were measured in 1974. [4] In 1996 M.S. Oey determined that LH 54-425 has an apparent (visual) magnitude of 13.13 and classified it as an O3-class giant. [2]
A series of photometric and spectroscopic observations carried out by P. Ostrov between from 1998 to 2001 revealed that LH 54-425 varied very slightly with a regular period of 2.2475 days [5] due to distorted stars in a close binary system composed by an O3 class giant and an approximately O5 class companion. The masses of the two stars were estimated at 100 M☉ and 50 M☉. A derivation of the orbit in 2008 using more accurate radial velocity data defined the companions as O3 and O5 main sequence stars with masses of 47 M☉ and 28 M☉ respectively. [3]
The binary system has an orbital period of 2 days, 5 hours, and 56 minutes. The two stars are separated by only 15 times the width of the sun, or less than twice their own diameters. The more massive primary orbits at 200 km/s, while the secondary moves at 350 km/s, and the system as a whole is approaching us at around 300 km/s. [3]
Both members of the LH 54-425 binary system are hot, massive, and luminous stars. The less massive secondary has an effective surface temperature of 41,000 K and the more massive primary is 45,000 K. The stars are 8 and 11 times the size of the sun, and the combination of high temperature and large size means the primary star is 500,000 times as luminous as the sun and the secondary 160,000 times as luminous. They are emitting a stellar wind with a velocity of 2,800 km/s. [8]
Stellar evolutionary models closely match the properties of the two stars at two million years old. At this age, they have almost the same mass as when they first formed. Comparison between the models and observations suggest a small mass discrepancy, with the models predicting higher masses than those derived from the orbit. This is a long-standing and unsolved problem in the modelling of massive stars. [6]
As the pair evolve, they may merge to form a single massive star. In time, the individual stars or the result of the merger will explode as a core-collapse supernova. [9]
S Doradus is one of the brightest stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, located roughly 160,000 light-years away. The star is a luminous blue variable, and one of the most luminous stars known, having a luminosity varying widely above and below 1,000,000 times the luminosity of the Sun, although it is too far away to be seen with the naked eye.

HD 93129 is a triple star system in the Carina Nebula, with all three components being hot O class stars amongst the most luminous stars in the Milky Way. It is the dominant member of the Trumpler 14 star cluster, a young star cluster within the Carina OB1 stellar association that harbors other super-luminous stars, like Eta Carinae and WR 25.
HD 93205, or V560 Carinae, is a binary stellar system, in the Carina Nebula in the constellation Carina. It consists of two massive O-stars that revolve around each other in 6 days.

WOH G64 is an unusual red supergiant (RSG) star in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) satellite galaxy in the southern constellation of Dorado. It is one of the largest known stars, being described as possibly being the largest star known. It is also one of the most luminous and massive red supergiants, with a radius calculated to be around 1,540 times that of the Sun (R☉) and a luminosity around 282,000 times the solar luminosity (L☉).
R136a1 is one of the most massive and luminous stars known, at nearly 200 M☉ and nearly 4.7 million L☉, and is also one of the hottest, at around 46,000 K. It is a Wolf–Rayet star at the center of R136, the central concentration of stars of the large NGC 2070 open cluster in the Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The cluster can be seen in the far southern celestial hemisphere with binoculars or a small telescope, at magnitude 7.25. R136a1 itself is 100 times fainter than the cluster and can only be resolved using speckle interferometry.
HD 5980 is a multiple star system on the outskirts of NGC 346 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and is one of the brightest stars in the SMC.
AB7, also known as SMC WR7, is a binary star in the Small Magellanic Cloud. A Wolf–Rayet star and a supergiant companion of spectral type O orbit in a period of 19.56 days. The system is surrounded by a ring-shaped nebula known as a bubble nebula.
HD 38282 is a massive spectroscopic binary star in the Tarantula Nebula, consisting of two hydrogen-rich Wolf-Rayet stars.
Melnick 34, also called BAT99-116, is a binary Wolf–Rayet star near R136 in the 30 Doradus complex in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Both components are amongst the most massive and most luminous stars known, and the system is the most massive known binary system.
HD 93403 is a spectroscopic binary containing two highly luminous hot blue stars. It is 10,000 light years away in the Carina Nebula in the constellation Carina. It appears to have spectral type O5.5III, but this is composed of two spectra from a blue supergiant and blue main sequence star of spectral type O5.5I and O7V respectively. The two stars orbit every 15 days with a separation that varies from 93 R☉ to 149 R☉. The binary is shedding mass at the high rate of 0.0005 M☉ per year.
HD 15558 is a massive O-type multiple star system in Cassiopeia and is specifically in our galaxy's Heart Nebula in the open cluster IC 1805. The primary is a very massive star with 152 M☉ and 660,000 L☉.
AB8, also known as SMC WR8, is a binary star in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). A Wolf-Rayet star and a main sequence companion of spectral type O orbit in a period of 16.638 days. It is one of only nine known WO stars, the only Wolf-Rayet star in the SMC not on the nitrogen sequence, and the only Wolf-Rayet star in the SMC outside the main bar.

GCIRS 16SW, also known as S97, is a contact binary star located in the Galactic Center. It is composed of two hot massive stars of equal size that orbit each other with a period of 19.5 days. The stars are so close that their atmospheres overlap, and the two stars form an eclipsing binary varying in brightness by 0.35 magnitudes at infrared wavelengths.
