HD 28254 is a binary star system located 180 light-years away in the constellation Dorado. The primary component is an 8th magnitude G-type main-sequence star. This star is larger, cooler, brighter, and more massive than the Sun, and its metal content is 2.3 times as much as the Sun. In 2009, a gas giant exoplanet was found in orbit around the star.

Properties

HD 28254 is a G-type star with a spectral type G1IV/V, [2] indicating that it has begun its evolution off the main sequence. It is estimated to have a mass 11% larger than the Sun's, a radius 57% larger, and an age around 7.8 billion years. It has a luminosity of 1.57 times the solar luminosity and an effective temperature of about 5,600  K. [4] HD 28254 has a low activity level and a larger metallicity than the Sun, with 2.3 times the solar iron abundance. [2]

HD 28254 is the brighter component of a visual binary. Its companion, HD 28254 B, has a visual apparent magnitude of 13.8 and is located at a separation of 4.3 arcseconds. The two stars have maintained the same separation through time, indicating that they form a physical binary system. [6] Furthermore, the radial velocity of the primary shows signs of orbital motion. From its brightness, the companion star is probably a red dwarf with spectral type between M0V and M2V, with about 48% the solar mass. The projected separation between the stars is 235  AU, corresponding to an orbital period of more than 1,000 years. [2]

Planetary system

In 2010, the discovery of an exoplanet orbiting HD 28254 was published. It was detected by Doppler spectroscopy from observations with the HARPS spectrograph between October 2003 and April 2009. The best fit model for the 32 radial velocity data obtained consists of a planet in an eccentric 1116 days orbit, plus a quadratic trend that is probably caused by the star HD 28254 B. [2]

The planet is a gas giant with a minimum mass of 1.16 times the mass of Jupiter. It is at a mean distance of 2.15  AU from the star, and takes 1116 days to complete an orbit. Its orbit has a very high eccentricity of 0.81, carrying the planet between 0.41 and 3.90 AU from the star. This can be the result of gravitational interactions with the secondary star via the Kozai mechanism. [2] In 2023, the inclination and true mass of HD 28254 b were measured via astrometry, though the mass remains uncertain - it is between about 1.6 and 6.8 times the mass of Jupiter. [7]

The system is located at a distance of 95.5 light-years from the Sun based on parallax measurements, and is drifting further away with a radial velocity of +49.3 km/s. It came to within 55.3 ly of the Solar System some 329,000 years ago.

HD 125612 is a binary star system with three exoplanetary companions in the equatorial constellation of Virgo. It is too dim to be visible to the naked eye, having an apparent visual magnitude of 8.31. The system is located at a distance of 188 light years from the Sun based on parallax measurements, but it is drifting closer with a radial velocity of −18 km/s.

HD 222582 is a multiple star system in the equatorial constellation of Aquarius. It is invisible to the naked eye with an apparent visual magnitude of 7.7, but can be viewed with binoculars or a small telescope. The system is located at a distance of 138 light years from the Sun based on parallax, and it is drifting further away with a radial velocity of +12 km/s. It is located close enough to the ecliptic that it is subject to lunar occultations.

HD 4113 is a dual star system in the southern constellation of Sculptor. It is too faint to be viewed with the naked eye, having an apparent visual magnitude of 7.88. The distance to this star, as estimated by parallax measurements, is 137 light years. It is receding away from the Sun with a radial velocity of +5 km/s.

HD 142022 is a binary star system located in the southernmost constellation of Octans. It is too faint to be visible to the naked eye, having an apparent visual magnitude of 7.70. The system is located at a distance of 133.5 light years from the Sun based on parallax. The primary has an absolute magnitude of 3.77.

HD 162020 is a star in the southern constellation of Scorpius with a likely red dwarf companion. It has an apparent visual magnitude of 9.10, which is too faint to be visible to the naked eye. The distance to this system is 102 light-years based on stellar parallax. It is drifting closer to the Sun with a radial velocity of −27 km/s, and is predicted to come to within ~18 light-years in 1.1 million years.

HD 20781 is a star which is part of a wide binary system with HD 20782. The companion star has a very large angular separation of 252 arcsec, corresponding to 9080 AU at the distance of HD 20782. Both stars possess their own planetary systems in S type orbits, with a total of five known planets around both stars. This is the first known example of planets being found orbiting both components of a wide binary system. HD 20781 has no noticeable starspot activity.

HD 27631 is a star with an orbiting exoplanet in the southern constellation of Horologium. It is too faint to be visible to the naked eye, having an apparent visual magnitude of 8.24. The distance to this system is 164 light years based on parallax measurements. It is drifting further away with a radial velocity of 21 km/s.
