Leach Railroad Station, is an unincorporated community located 3 miles south of Catlettsburg in Boyd County, Kentucky. It was first established in approximately 1882 as a freight and passenger loading facility for the Chatteroi railroad (later Chesapeake and Ohio Railway). The former community of Leech Station is now mostly owned by Marathon Oil, which operates one of its seven oil refineries there. Marathon bought the large refinery at Leech Station from Ashland, Inc. in 1999. In 2000, Marathon took over ownership of old U.S. 23 and then purchased the remaining residential property located at Leech Station.

Tormey, formerly known as El Cierbo, is an unincorporated community in Contra Costa County, California, United States. It is located between Rodeo and Crockett on the edge of the ConocoPhillips oil refinery in Rodeo. It is 6.5 miles (10 km) west-northwest of Martinez, at an elevation of 20 feet. The community is home to several dozen homes and the former offices of the John Swett Unified School District. Originally a company town for management and refinery workers at the Selby Smelter, American Smelting and Refining Company. Tormey is located astride old U.S. Route 40, now San Pablo Avenue. Old County Road offshoots from it and at the end there is a water reservoir. The former Southern Pacific Railroad and now its new owner since 1996, the Union Pacific Railroad, skirts the bayshore side of Tormey. In the 1940s and 50's the Tormey Store served many of the grocery needs of the residents. The Hogg family managed the store with its single gasoline pump for many years. The Standard Oil Company of Kentucky or Kyso was an oil company and gasoline distributor that operated in the southeastern United States from 1886 until it was acquired by Chevron Oil Company in 1960. After the breakup of the Standard Oil company in 1911, the company was awarded rights to run the oil operation of Kentucky, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi.

Catlettsburg Refinery

The Catlettsburg Refinery is an American oil refinery. It is located in northeastern Kentucky, at the intersection of Interstate 64 and U.S. Route 23 in Catlettsburg, Kentucky near the cities of Ashland, Kentucky and Huntington, West Virginia. The facility was built in 1916 by the Great Eastern Refining Company and purchased in 1924 by the Ashland Refining Company. The refinery now occupies a 650-acre (260 ha) plus site, producing more than 277,000 barrels per day (44,000 m3/d), and employing around 1,600 employees and contractors. Its location on the west banks of the Big Sandy River and only two miles south of the Ohio River, allows it to ship products by barge as well as pipeline. It is owned and operated by Marathon Petroleum Corporation.

Mandan Refinery Oil refinery in North Dakota

The Mandan Refinery is the largest oil refinery in North Dakota, partially located within the northeastern corner of the city limits of Mandan, ND just north off of Exit 153 of Interstate 94. Overall, it ranked 83rd in the country as of January 2018 with a nameplate capacity of 73,800 barrels (11,730 m3) per day. The facility is owned by Marathon Petroleum.

Neal, Kentucky is a mostly extinct hamlet located south of Catlettsburg near the oil refining facility formerly owned by Ashland Oil and Refinining Co., Inc. and its current owner Marathon Petroleum's Catlettsburg Refinery is located here. At its peak, Neal had a population of over 200 but this declined as Ashland Oil purchased most of the property here from the residents to enlarge the refinery. U.S. Route 23 extended throughout the community until it was replaced with a modern four lane alignment in 1987. The Kentucky Department of Highways renumbered it KY 757 after the realignment. Then, in 1999, Marathon purchased the highway from state and it now ends just south of Neal at a security gate. Systematically Marathon has purchased the community and very little of Neal's homes and businesses remain. Neal is located at approximately 38°19′30″N82°35′00″W in southeastern Boyd County, across the Big Sandy River from West Virginia.

On February 1, 2015, United Steel, Paper and Forestry, Rubber, Manufacturing, Energy, Allied Industrial and Service Workers International Union announced that "more than 5,200 USW Oil Workers at 11 refineries in California, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Texas and Washington are on strike against the industry’s unfair labor practices". The list of charges alleged by NSW filed with the NLRB included: bad-faith bargaining over the companies’ refusal to negotiate over mandatory subjects, impeded bargaining for the companies’ undue delays in providing information, threatening workers if they join the ULP strike and others. As of March 3, 2015, about 6,550 workers were on strike at 15 plants, including 12 refineries with a fifth of U.S. capacity. It was the first time since 1982 that U.S. oil workers have walked off their jobs to protest working conditions. The National Oil Bargaining talks began in 1965 and are part of the U.S. oil industry's Pattern bargaining process.

The refinery has operated in Anacortes since 1955, and has 425 full-time employees. It has a 120,000 barrels per day (bpd) capacity and is operated by Marathon Petroleum.
