Lego Prince of Persia (stylized as LEGO Prince of Persia) was a Lego theme based on the 2010 film Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time . It was licensed from Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films. [2] [3] [4] [5] The theme was introduced in 2010 and was discontinued by the end of 2011.

Overview

The focus of the product line was Prince Dastan battling against Nizam and Hassansin. Lego Prince of Persia aimed to recreate the main characters in Lego form, including Prince Dastan, Tamina, Nizam, Sheik Amar, Zolm and Hassansin. [5]

During Jake Gyllenhaal's appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night, Jake brought along his 18-inch tall Lego doll replicating his character Dastan from Prince of Persia and surprised the host Jimmy Kimmel with his own Lego doll designed to personally depict the late-night host. [6]

Development

Lego Prince of Persia was inspired by the 2010 film Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time . The Lego construction toy range was based on the film and developed in collaboration with Disney Consumer Products. The construction sets were designed to recreate the story and characters of the film in Lego form. [5]

Launch

The Lego Prince of Persia theme was launched at the American International Toy Fair in 2010. As part of the marketing campaign, The Lego Group released five Lego sets based on the film. Each set featured different Ostrich Race, Alamut market and Alamut castle. [7]

Promotion and release

In early 2009, Disney and Lego announced a multi-year plan to produce Lego sets based on Disney films. In a press release they announced plans for three Disney themes – Cars , Prince of Persia and Toy Story . [8] To coincide with the release of the new film, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Lego released a short Lego animated film based on the events of the film. It was narrated by Jake Gyllenhaal who played Prince Dastan in the film. [9] [10]

Construction sets

According to Bricklink, The Lego Group released a total of six Lego sets and a promotional polybag as part of Lego Prince of Persia theme. [1] It was discontinued by the end of 2011. [11]

The five sets were released in the United States on April 12, 2010, and in the United Kingdom on April 19. [12] [13] In addition, Dagger Trap (set number: 20017) was released in 2010 as an exclusive, available with a subscription of Lego's Brickmaster Magazine. [14] [15]

Desert Attack

Desert Attack (set number: 7569) was released on 12 April 2010. The set consisted of 67 pieces with 4 minifigures. The set featured a desert setting, horse, snake and four minifigures of Dastan, a hatchet hassansin, a claw hassansin and a skeleton. [12]

The Ostrich Race

The Ostrich Race (set number: 7570) was released on 12 April 2010. The set consisted of 169 pieces with 3 minifigures. The set featured a platform, a set of gates, two ostriches and three minifigures of Dastan, Sheik Amar and an ostrich jockey. [12]

The Fight for the Dagger

The Fight for the Dagger (set number: 7571) was released on 12 April 2010. The set consisted of 258 pieces with 4 minifigures. The set featured a building from the Alamut market, a market stall, a camel and four minifigures of Dastan, Princess Tamina, Asoka and an Alamut merchant. [12]

Quest Against Time

Quest Against Time (set number: 7572) was released on 12 April 2010. The set consisted of 506 pieces with 4 minifigures. The set featured a trap-filled passage, a rock setting with the Sands of Time and four minifigures of Princess Tamina, Dastan, Nizam and Zolm. [12]

Battle of Alamut

Battle of Alamut (set number: 7573) was released on 12 April 2010. The set consisted of 821 pieces with 7 minifigures. The set featured the Alamut castle, a camel and seven minifigures of Dastan, Nizam, Seso, two Alamat guards, Gool and Tamah. [12]

Reception

In 2011, The Lego Group reported that due to the Lego Toy Story , Lego Prince of Persia, Lego Pirates of the Caribbean and Lego Cars 2 lines, it had for the first time in its 50-year history in the American market surpassed $1.0 billion in consumer sales of Lego products, reaching its highest share of construction toys and total U.S. toy market ever. Lego models of important scenes, vehicles and characters were made for the first six films and all of the published books. The first sets appeared in 2001, to coincide with the release of the first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Subsequent sets were released alongside the new films, until Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The line then went dormant for three years, with sets being released in 2010 and 2011. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is a 2010 American action fantasy film directed by Mike Newell from a screenplay by Boaz Yakin, Doug Miro, and Carlo Bernard, based on the video game series Prince of Persia created by Jordan Mechner. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Ben Kingsley, Gemma Arterton, and Alfred Molina. It is an adaptation of the 2003 video game of the same name published by Ubisoft. Lego Spider-Man is a product range of the Lego construction toy, based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man. When the theme first launched in 2002, it was inspired by the Spider-Man film released the same year and was part of the Lego Studios line. Additional sets were released two years later, based on the film's sequel, Spider-Man 2. The theme was discontinued before the release of Spider-Man 3, and the rights were sold to rival Mega Brands, who entered a multi-year licensing deal with Marvel Enterprises, giving them the rights to produce playsets, vehicles, and other building-themed products based upon various Marvel characters for their Mega Bloks toys.

Lego Creator is a Lego theme for generic models. Creator sets have few specialized bricks to create buildings, creatures, vehicles, and robots. Some sets featured instructions for three different possible builds from the bricks included and most sets in recent years have used the 3-in-1 label. Creator is also a parent theme to Lego Icons, a Lego subtheme for adolescents and adults featuring advanced building techniques and large piece counts, mostly known for Modular Buildings and detailed vehicles. Creator also has had several other subthemes such as X-Pods and mosaics.

Lego Belville was a Lego theme designed to appeal primarily to girls. First introduced in 1994, the theme included multi-jointed doll-like characters that were larger in scale than the traditional Lego minifigure. The toy sets were produced from standard Lego bricks and larger pieces, often in a pink and purple colour scheme, and depicted scenes from fairy tales and fantasy as well as everyday life. The product line was discontinued in 2009. Belville's direct successor is Lego Friends, which was introduced in 2012. The first wave was released in May 2011 with the second wave coming out in November 2011. In November 2010, it was officially announced by Lego that the video game Lego Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game was in production. It was released on May 10, 2011, in North America. The series acts as a thematic replacement for the popular Lego Pirates theme, featuring many of the same elements. Most of the sets are similar to the Lego Pirates theme. The theme was first introduced in 2011 and discontinued in 2017.

Lego Pharaoh's Quest was a Lego theme that was first introduced in 2011. It uses elements from the previous Lego Adventurers theme. The Lego Pharaoh's Quest theme was discontinued by the end of 2012.

The Lego Ninjago Movie was a product line based on The Lego Ninjago Movie, the third film of The Lego Movie franchise. It was licensed from The Lego Group and Warner Bros. Animation. The theme was introduced in 2017 as part of a licensing and merchandising programme associated with the film. Alongside the release of the Lego sets, the programme included the release of several promotional short films and The Lego Ninjago Movie Video Game. The product line was discontinued by the end of 2019.
