Lego Minecraft (stylized as LEGO Minecraft) is a Lego theme based on the sandbox video game Minecraft . The theme was first introduced in 2012. [3]

Overview

The earlier "Micro World" sets feature a group of four interlocking scenes that can be rearranged, with two having a removable surface with caves containing ores, underground rivers, and a Minecart track, it also includes characters (referred to by Lego as Micromobs) which can be moved around like normal Lego. [4]

The later sets feature brick-built locations with simple pieces (in order to remain faithful to Minecraft's blocky aesthetics), often on base plates raised by bricks, to allow for inter-connectivity with other sets. These sets are all of a minifigure scale, with custom moulds for the character heads, tools and certain body parts (for example the Creeper, which consists of primarily a single moulded piece for its torso and legs).

In October 2022, The Lego Group and Minecraft had launched a new Shuffle music project in YouTube. [5] The Lego Minecraft series also had a series of video games for the consoles of Xbox and Playstation.

Development

Microworlds

When asked about Lego Minecraft's beginnings, Mojang chief executive officer Carl Manneh stated that "it was one of the first things we talked about when we started Mojang." [6] Mojang started the project on the "Lego Ideas" program, which required ten thousand signatures for the project to be approved. With the strong support of the Minecraft community, the signature objective was achieved within 2 days, [7] and the development of the Lego Minecraft set commenced after Lego reviewed the project. The first Micro-World set was released on June 6, 2012. Portions of the sales proceeds went to a charity of Lego's choosing. [8] On July 17, 2013, it was announced that two additional Micro-World sets would be added to the Minecraft theme based on the "Nether" and "Village" areas of the game. [9] They were first shown at San Diego Comic-Con and released September 1, 2013. [9] The fourth and final Micro-World set exploring "The End" region was released in summer 2014. [10]

Minifigures

Minifigure sized Lego sets were then later announced in 2014. The prototypes of Creepers, mine carts, and sheep were all being developed as part of a Co-Build Project announced after MineCon, a fan convention. The initial group of 6 minifigre-scaled sets including the First Night, the Mine, the Ender Dragon, Crafting Box, the Farm and the Cave were released from November to December 2014. [11] As of now, there are 43 Minifig-Scale that have been released with more on the way.

Bigfigs

In 2019, Lego introduced Minecraft Bigfigs which are Big brick built figures based on Minecraft mobs similar to Lego Construction figures like Bionicle, Knights Kingdom II, etc. So far there have been five Bigfigs released consisting of Bigfig Steve with Parrot, Bigfig Alex with Chicken, Bigfig Skeleton with Magma Cube, Bigfig Creeper and Ocelot, and Bigfig Pig with Baby Zombie, with a Series 3 unlikely to be released.

Launch

Following the released of Minecraft Micro World (set number: 21102) for Lego Cuusoo in 2012. [12] Lego Minecraft theme revealed at the Comic-Con International in San Diego and was launched in September 2013. As part of the marketing campaign, The Lego Group released the two sets based on the sandbox video game Minecraft . [13]

The Minecraft player is Kai from Lego Ninjago. Also the mobs that raid villages in Minecraft 1.14 are part of the villager species, but they are referred to in the game as pillagers.

Lego Ideas sets

In 2012, Minecraft Micro World (set number: 21102) was released on 1 June 2012 as a part Lego Ideas theme and based on the video game Minecraft . [36] [37] First set to start a new Lego Minecraft theme.

Lego BrickHeadz sets

Steve & Creeper (set number: 41612) was released in August 2018 as part of the Lego BrickHeadz theme and based on the Minecraft video game. The set consists of 160 pieces and 2 baseplates. [38]

In March 2023, Alex (set number: 40624), Llama (set number: 40625) and Zombie (set number: 40626) were released on 1 April 2023. [39] [40]

Web shorts

The product line was accompanied by a series of animated short films that was released on YouTube.

Reception

Mashable listed the first Lego Minecraft set as a creative gift for the 2012 Christmas season. [42] Forbes magazine noted in December 2012 that the original set was sold out due to its great popularity. [43]

In 2020, The Crafting Box 3.0 (set number: 21161) was listed in the "LEGO Christmas 2020 gift list for gamers" by Lego fansite Brick Fanatics. [44]

Awards and nominations

In 2015, The Nether Fortress (set number: 21122) was awarded "DreamToys" in the Build It And They Will Thrive category by the Toy Retailers Association. [45]

In 2022, The Mushroom House (set number: 21179) was awarded "DreamToys" in the Video Game Inspired category by the Toy Retailers Association. [46]

Lego Harry Potter is a Lego theme based on the film series of the same name and the eponymous novels by British author J. K. Rowling. It is licensed from Warner Bros. Lego models of important scenes, vehicles and characters were made for the first six films and all of the published books. For the release of Toy Story 4 there was one Duplo set based on the third film and 6 Lego sets based on the fourth film. Lego Minifigures are a 2010 Lego theme based on a set of collectible Lego minifigures. Each figure is an original character with new clothing and facial designs, and many contain previously unseen accessories. Each series usually contains 16 different minifigures; however, some series contain as few as 9 minifigures, while others contain up to 22. Since 2021, the number of different minifigures for a series is set to 12. In 2023, the Disney 100-anniversary series came out, bringing the total number of figures to 18, although it was once again reduced to 12 with the second Marvel series. This series also introduced paper boxes, instead of the plastic bags, making it no longer possible to feel up the pieces for each figure.

Lego Ninjago is a Lego theme that was created in 2011 and a flagship brand of The Lego Group. It is the first theme to be based on ninja since the discontinuation of the Lego Ninja theme in 2000. It was produced to coincide with the animated television series Ninjago, which was superseded in 2023 by a new series titled Ninjago: Dragons Rising.

Lego Friends are a product range of Lego construction toys designed primarily for girls that was launched in 2012. It introduced "mini-doll" figures, which are about the same size as traditional Lego minifigures but are more detailed and realistic. Nexo Knights is a 3D animated television series that aired on Cartoon Network and premiered in 2016. It was produced by The Lego Group to coincide with the Lego theme of the same name. The series is based on a fantasy castle concept and is set in a futuristic kingdom called Knighton, which is home to five young knights. The storyline follows the adventures of the five knights as they defend their home from a court jester named Jestro and his monsters. Four seasons were produced for a total of 40 episodes. The fourth season finished airing in 2017. In 2018, The Lego Group discontinued the Nexo Knights theme, which also resulted in the cancellation of the series.

Lego Disney is a Lego theme based on the various Disney Princesses and Disney characters involved in different Disney films and television series. It is licensed from Walt Disney Pictures. The theme was first introduced in 2016 and was re-branded theme from the Lego Disney Princess line in 2017. The toy line was accompanied by several shorts and television specials based on Lego Disney.

Before the launch of the Lego The Powerpuff Girls theme, two packs were released for the Lego Dimensions toys-to-life video game in 2017. The theme was introduced in August 2018 and was discontinued by the end of 2019.

Lego The Lord of the Rings is a Lego theme based on The Lord of the Rings film trilogy directed by Peter Jackson and the novel by the English author and scholar J. R. R. Tolkien. It is licensed from Warner Bros., New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The theme was first introduced in 2012. The first sets appeared in 2012, to coincide with a release of the video game Lego The Lord of the Rings. The theme was first introduced in March 2021, before being discontinued by the end of January 2022 after being deemed a commercial disaster.

Lego BrickHeadz is a Lego theme that recreates iconic characters from themes like DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Star Wars and Disney as buildable characters. The theme was first introduced in 2016.

Lego Minions: The Rise of Gru was a Lego theme based on the film of the same name. It is licensed from Universal Pictures and Illumination. The theme was first introduced in March 2020. It was eventually discontinued by the end of December 2022.

Lego Avatar is a Lego theme based on the film series of the same name created by James Cameron. It is licensed from 20th Century Studios, The Walt Disney Company and Lightstorm Entertainment.
