Leila Luliana da Costa Vieira Lopes Umenyiora (born 26 February 1986) is an Angolan model and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Universe 2011. She had previously won Miss Angola UK 2010 and Miss Angola 2010, and was the first woman from Angola to win Miss Universe.
Lopes was born on February 26, 1986, in Benguela, Angola. [2] [3] [4] Prior to being a contestant in beauty pageants, she studied business management at the University of Suffolk in Ipswich, UK. [3] [5] [6] Lopes is actively involved in raising awareness about HIV/AIDS and the discrimination that people with the disease experience. [3] [7] [8]
While living and studying in England, she participated in Miss Angola UK on 8 October 2010. Lopes won the title, giving her the opportunity to represent the British Angolan community in Miss Angola 2010. [9]
Lopes beat 20 other candidates to be named Miss Angola in Luanda on 18 December 2010, gaining her the right to represent Angola in Miss Universe 2011. [10] She also obtained the Photogenic Award during the contest. [11]
On 12 September 2011, Lopes was crowned Miss Universe in São Paulo, Brazil, receiving the title from the former Miss Universe Ximena Navarrete of Mexico. [12] [13] She is currently the 60th Miss Universe titleholder, and is the first Angolan woman to hold the position. [14] Lopes is the 5th woman of African descent to win the title since the beginning of the worldwide pageant (following Miss Trinidad and Tobago in 1977, Miss USA in 1995, Miss Trinidad and Tobago in 1998, and Miss Botswana in 1999)[ citation needed ] and the fourth African woman from the African continent to win following Mpule Kwelagobe, Miss Universe 1999 from Botswana.[ citation needed ]
In October 2011, Lopes paid a visit to Indonesia where she attended local charity events and Puteri Indonesia 2011 Pageant held at Jakarta Convention Center, in Jakarta. [15] [16]
In December 2011, Lopes was invited to attend the first edition of the Miss Gabon Pageant in Libreville, Gabon where she crowned the first Gabonese representative to Miss Universe, Marie-Noëlle Ada Meyo from Ngounié Province. [17]
In February 2012, Lopes visited Johannesburg, South Africa. On arrival she was welcomed by Miss South Africa 2011 Melinda Bam at a red carpet event in Sun City. During her visit, Lopes attended a launch event for African Fashion International on February 16 in support of Joburg Fashion Week 2012. She also visited one of Melinda Bam's supported charities - Thuthuzela, an NGO which looks after abandoned and orphaned children in Alexandra Township. Lopes also attended the State of the Province Address by Honourable Thandi Modise, Premier of the North-West, on 17 February at the North-West University, Mafikeng Campus. [18]
Lopes travelled to Düsseldorf, Germany with her fellow titleholders Alyssa Campanella and Danielle Doty for a week-long USO/Armed Forces Entertainment tour from 9–14 March 2012. During the week, she also participated in the Beauty International Trade Show which took place at Düsseldorf Exhibition Centre. [19]
Lopes walked the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France on 23 May 2012. She also attended the De Grisogono Glam Extravaganza held at the Hotel Du Cap Eden-Roc in Cap D'Antibes, France on the same day. Prior to her visit to France, she was in Lisbon, Portugal for a series of photoshoots and television appearances, at the invitation of Maxim Portugal Magazine. [20] [21]
In June 2012, Lopes embarked on a 5-country West African tour to Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo and Nigeria. [22] Later that month, Lopes attended the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. [23] [24]
In October 2012, Lopes visited Nicaragua for 'Fashion for Smiles', a fashion show organized by Operation Smile Nicaragua with Silhuetas models, which took place at the Crowne Plaza Convention Center in Managua with the participation of 15 Miss Universe 2012 competitors from the Americas. [25]
During her reign, Lopes visited Singapore, Indonesia, Angola, Cambodia, The Bahamas, Gabon, Jamaica, South Africa, Germany, Dominican Republic, Portugal, France, Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, Guyana, Nicaragua, Namibia, Kenya, Mozambique, and the USA.
After Lopes was crowned Miss Universe 2011, allegations arose that false documents were used to allow her to participate in Miss Angola UK, which enabled her to compete in Miss Angola and subsequently Miss Universe. [9] [26] [27] It was claimed that Lopes had never lived outside of Angola at the time she competed, so should not have been allowed to enter a competition that was exclusively for Angolan citizens living in the UK. [27] [28] The use of false documents has since been denied by both Lopes and the Miss Universe organizers [29] [30] and Lopes herself has stated that she had lived in England for a total of four years. In February 2013, she became engaged to former New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora in Monaco. [33] They were married on 30 May 2015. [34] [35] In February 2018, they announced that Lopes was pregnant with their first child together. [36] Their son was born later that year. [37]
Ositadimma "Osi" Umenyiora is a former American football defensive end. He played college football for Troy University and was drafted by the New York Giants in the second round of the 2003 NFL Draft. Umenyiora was a two-time Pro Bowl selection and holds the Giants franchise record for most sacks in one game. He is one of five British-born players to have won a Super Bowl, joining Marvin Allen, Scott McCready, former Giants teammate Lawrence Tynes and Jay Ajayi. He also played for the Atlanta Falcons.
Micaela Patrícia Reis is an Angolan actress, TV Host, model and beauty queen who was a Top 10 finalist at Miss Universe 2007 and placed first runner-up to Miss World 2007, becoming Miss World Africa. She was the highest placed Miss Angola at both Miss Universe and Miss World before the win of Leila Lopes in Miss Universe 2011.
Miss Angola is a national beauty pageant in Angola. The pageant was founded in 1997, and has sent its winners to Miss Universe since its foundation. From 1998 to 2012, its first runners-up were sent to Miss World.
Lesliana Massoxi Amaro Gomes Pereira, known simply as Lesliana Pereira, is an Angolan actress, model and beauty pageant winner. She was crowned Miss Angola in 2007. She went on to represent her country at Miss Universe 2008, but was unplaced. In 2014, she starred in the film Njinga: Queen Of Angola, a role that earned her Best Actress at the 11th Africa Movie Academy Awards.
Miss Universe 2011, the 60th anniversary of the Miss Universe pageant, was held on September 12, 2011 at Credicard Hall, São Paulo, Brazil. Leila Lopes of Angola was crowned at the end of the event by her predecessor Ximena Navarrete of Mexico. She became the first woman from Angola, and the fourth woman from Africa to win the title after South Africa in 1978, Namibia in 1992 and Botswana in 1999. Contestants from 89 countries and territories participated in this year's pageant, surpassing the previous record of 86 contestants that competed on 2006 edition. This marks the most recent edition, as of 2022, that any country has posted its first national win at Miss Universe.
Alyssa Marie Campanella is an American model, blogger, and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss USA 2011. Having previously been crowned Miss California USA 2011, Campanella was the sixth woman representing California to win the Miss USA title. As Miss USA, Campanella represented the United States at Miss Universe 2011, where she placed in the top sixteen. A native of New Jersey, Campanella was also crowned Miss New Jersey Teen USA 2007 and placed as the first runner-up at Miss Teen USA 2007.
Laury Betty Thilleman is a French journalist, model, TV Host, actress and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss France 2011 on 4 December 2010. She made the top 10 at Miss Universe 2011.
Olesia Stefanko (Ukrainian: Олеся Стефанко; is a Ukrainian lawyer and beauty queen who was crowned Miss Ukraine Universe 2011 and represented her country in the 2011 Miss Universe pageant, where she was 1st runner up.
Miss Universe 2012, the 61st Miss Universe pageant, was held on December 19, 2012 at PH Live at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. Leila Lopes of Angola crowned her successor Olivia Culpo of the United States at the end of the event, making the eighth crown for the United States at Miss Universe. 89 contestants competed in this year's pageant, same as the last year. This record was broken in 2017 with 92 contestants, which again was broken in 2018 with 94 contestants.
