In cricket, a century occurs when a batsman scores 100 runs or more in an innings. 168 England players have scored centuries in Test matches. [1] The first England batsman to hit a century was W. G. Grace, who made 152 in the first innings of England's five-wicket victory over Australia at The Oval on 6 September 1880. The player with the most centuries for England is Alastair Cook, who has made 33 since his first against India at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Ground in Nagpur on 1 March 2006. Wally Hammond is the player with the most double-centuries (scores of 200 runs or more), having scored seven, starting with an innings of 251 runs against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on 14 December 1928. Hammond is one of five England players to have hit a triple-century (a score of 300 runs or more), along with Andy Sandham, Len Hutton, John Edrich and Graham Gooch; all five made one triple-century in their careers. Hutton holds the record for the biggest innings by an England Test batsman, with a score of 364 in his sixth Test appearance, against Australia at The Oval on 20 August 1938; it was the highest score by a batsman in the history of Test cricket at the time, a record that stood for 20 years until Garfield Sobers bested it by one run in 1958.
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a 20-metre (22-yard) pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at the wicket with the bat, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this and dismiss each player. Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground. When ten players have been dismissed, the innings ends and the teams swap roles. The game is adjudicated by two umpires, aided by a third umpire and match referee in international matches. They communicate with two off-field scorers who record the match's statistical information.
In the sport of cricket, a century is a score of 100 or more runs in a single innings by a batsman or batswoman. The term is also included in "century partnership" which occurs when two batters add 100 runs to the team total when they are batting together. A century is regarded as a landmark score for batters and a player's number of centuries is generally recorded in his career statistics. Scoring a century is loosely equivalent in merit to a bowler taking five wickets in an innings, and is commonly referred to as a ton or hundred. Scores of more than 200 runs are still statistically counted as a century, although these scores are referred as double, triple, and quadruple centuries, and so on.
Ben Stokes and the others represents England and Wales in international cricket. Since 1997, it has been governed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), having been previously governed by Marylebone Cricket Club since 1903. England, as a founding nation, is a Full Member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) with Test, One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) status. Until the 1990s, Scottish and Irish players also played for England as those countries were not yet ICC members in their own right.
In cricket, a batter is not out if he comes out to bat in an innings and has not been dismissed by the end of an innings. The batter is also not out while his innings is still in progress.
William Gilbert "W. G." Grace was an English amateur cricketer who was important in the development of the sport and is widely considered one of its greatest-ever players. Universally known as "W. G.", he played first-class cricket for a record-equalling 44 seasons, from 1865 to 1908, during which he captained England, Gloucestershire, the Gentlemen, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the United South of England Eleven (USEE) and several other teams.
Walter Reginald "Wally" Hammond was an English first-class cricketer who played for Gloucestershire in a career that lasted from 1920 to 1951. Beginning as a professional, he later became an amateur and was appointed captain of England. Primarily a middle-order batsman, Wisden Cricketers' Almanack described him in his obituary as one of the four best batsmen in the history of cricket. He was considered to be the best English batsman of the 1930s by commentators and those with whom he played; they also said that he was one of the best slip fielders ever. Hammond was an effective fast-medium pace bowler and contemporaries believed that if he had been less reluctant to bowl, he could have achieved even more with the ball than he did.
Graham Alan Gooch, is a former English first-class cricketer who captained Essex and England. He was one of the most successful international batsmen of his generation, and through a career spanning from 1973 until 2000, he became the most prolific run scorer of all time, with 67,057 runs across first-class and limited-overs games. His List A cricket tally of 22,211 runs is also a record. He is one of only twenty-five players to have scored over 100 first-class centuries.
