The Interstate Highways in Massachusetts comprise five current primary Interstate Highways and eight auxiliary Interstates. In addition, two auxiliary Interstates were proposed and then cancelled.
The longest Interstate Highway in Massachusetts is I-90 with 136 miles, followed by I-495 with 121 miles.
Several freeway projects in the Boston area planned as part of the Interstate Highway System were cancelled in the 1970s following community opposition, including the Inner Belt (I-695) and Southwest Expressway (I-95). [3] The Big Dig megaproject in the 1990s and 2000s, which realigned several highways in Downtown Boston, included a new tunnel for I-93 to replace the Central Artery and an extension of I-90 via the Ted Williams Tunnel. The Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways, commonly known as the Interstate Highway System, is a network of controlled-access highways that forms part of the National Highway System in the United States. The system extends throughout the contiguous United States and has routes in Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico.
Interstate 380 (I-380) is a short 3.3-mile (5.3 km) east–west auxiliary Interstate Highway in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California, connecting I-280 in San Bruno to US Route 101 (US 101) near San Francisco International Airport. The highway primarily consists of only three intersections: I-280, State Route 82, and US 101. Like the nearby I-280, I-380 never connects to I-80, its parent Interstate Highway. However, there is no rule that says that spur routes need to.
Interstate 459 (I-459) is a bypass highway of I-59 that is an alternate Interstate Highway around the southern sides of Birmingham, Bessemer, and several other cities and towns in Jefferson County, Alabama. I-459 lies entirely within Jefferson County. This Interstate Highway is about 32.8 miles (52.8 km) long, and its construction was completed in 1984. I-459 has major interchanges with I-59, I-20, and I-65.
Interstate 180 (I-180) is a 1.09-mile-long (1.75 km) connector in the US state of Wyoming between I-80 and downtown Cheyenne.
Interstate 395 (I-395) is an auxiliary Interstate Highway in the U.S. states of Connecticut and Massachusetts; it is maintained by the Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT) and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). Spanning nearly 67 miles (108 km) on a south–north axis, it is the only spur route of Interstate 95 in Connecticut. The 36-mile (58 km) section between its splits from I-95 in East Lyme and Route 695 in Plainfield is a component highway of the Connecticut Turnpike. Within that state, the highway is named the American Ex-Prisoner of War Memorial Highway from Plainfield to Thompson.
Interstate 110 (I-110) is a 4.1-mile (6.6 km) freeway spur route in Biloxi, Mississippi, running south from I-10 to U.S. Route 90 (US 90). It is one of very few places on the Interstate Highway System utilizing a drawbridge. The southbound control city is Biloxi, with a series of bridges out over the Gulf of Mexico at the southern terminus. There is no northbound control city; the road is marked with trailblazers reading "TO I-10" instead. It ran entirely concurrently with Mississippi Highway 15 (MS 15), until MS 15 was truncated to I-10.
Interstate 190 (I-190) is a 19.26 miles (31.00 km) auxiliary Interstate Highway in the US state of Massachusetts, maintained by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). Spanning approximately 19 miles (31 km) along a south–north axis, it is a spur route of I-90 in Central Massachusetts. However, its southern terminus exists at its split from I-290 in Worcester, which itself splits from the turnpike in Auburn. Its northern terminus lays at an interchange with Route 2 in Leominster.
Interstate 290 (I-290) is an auxiliary Interstate Highway in the US state of Massachusetts, maintained by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). Spanning approximately 20 miles (32 km), it is signed as an east–west spur route of I-90 in Central Massachusetts. The route begins in Auburn at I-90 as a northward continuation of I-395. It follows an L-shaped route, the nominally western half of which runs north into the city of Worcester, and, upon leaving the city, turns to the east to its eastern terminus at I-495 in Marlborough. Past I-495, the road continues as an unnumbered one-mile (1.6 km) connector to the town of Hudson.
Interstate 235 (I-235) in Kansas is a 16.52-mile-long (26.59 km) north–south bypass spur route of I-35 that travels through the western part of Wichita. Its northern terminus is at an interchange with I-135/U.S. Highway 81 (US-81)/K-15/K-96/K-254 north of the city, where the freeway continues east as K-254. The southern is at I-135/US-81 shortly before US-81 separates from I-135 and I-135 connects to I-35 at I-135's own southern terminus.
County Route 66 is an east–west numbered road in San Bernardino County, California. It runs for 175.7 miles (282.8 km) from Oro Grande to the U.S. Route 95 (US 95) at Arrowhead Junction. The entire route is part of the former U.S. Route 66 (US 66), connecting towns that were bypassed by Interstate 40 (I-40) such as Oro Grande and Amboy. It is the only numbered county route in San Bernardino County.
