Isabelle Huppert is a French actress who has appeared in more than 120 feature films, mostly in starring roles. [1] Regarded as one of the most respected actresses in French cinema, [2] she has appeared in films directed by Claude Chabrol, Jean-Luc Godard and Michael Haneke. [3] She has also starred in numerous stage productions, in Paris and around the world.
Her first big break came in Bertrand Blier's Les Valseuses (1974), which was a success in France. [4] Huppert's first English-language film was Rosebud (1975), directed by Otto Preminger and starring Peter O'Toole.
As of 2022, she has appeared in 22 films that have been screened In Competition at the Cannes Film Festival. [5] At Cannes she has won the Best Actress Award twice, for her roles in Violette Nozière (1978) and The Piano Teacher (2001). [5] She has also won a BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer for The Lacemaker (1977), [6] and two Volpi Cups at Venice for Story of Women (1988) and La Cérémonie (1995). [7] She has been nominated for 16 César Awards, twice winning the Best Actress award, for La Cérémonie and for Elle . [8] Huppert won the Golden Globe Award and received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her work in Paul Verhoeven's Elle (2016).
Also a prolific stage actress, Huppert is the most nominated actress for the Molière Award, with eight nominations; she received an honorary lifetime achievement award in 2017. In 2017 she was also awarded the Europe Theatre Prize. [9]
In 2022 she received the Honorary Golden Bear from the Berlin Film Festival. [10]

Isabelle Yasmine Adjani is a French actress and singer of Algerian and German descent.
Isabelle Anne Madeleine Huppert is a French actress. Known for her portrayals of cold, austere women devoid of morality, she is considered one of the greatest actresses of her generation. With 16 nominations and two wins, Huppert is the most nominated actress at the César Awards. Jean-Louis Xavier Trintignant was a French actor. He made his theatrical debut in 1951, and went on to be regarded as one of the best French dramatic actors of the post-war era. He starred in many classic films of European cinema, and worked with many prominent auteur directors, including Roger Vadim, Costa-Gavras, Claude Lelouch, Claude Chabrol, Bernardo Bertolucci, Éric Rohmer, François Truffaut, Krzysztof Kieślowski, and Michael Haneke.
The Piano Teacher is a 2001 erotic psychological drama film written and directed by Michael Haneke, based on the 1983 novel of the same name by Elfriede Jelinek. It tells the story of an unmarried piano teacher at a Vienna conservatory, living with her mother in a state of emotional and sexual disequilibrium, who enters into a sadomasochistic relationship with her student. A co-production between France and Austria, Haneke was given the opportunity to direct after previous attempts to adapt the novel by filmmakers Valie Export and Paulus Manker collapsed for financial reasons.
Nathalie "Natacha" Régnier is a Belgian actress. She received a Cannes Film Festival Award, a European Film Award, and a César Award for her role in the 1998 film The Dreamlife of Angels. Régnier is the first Belgian actress to win a César Award.
Michael Haneke is an Austrian film director and screenwriter. His work often examines social issues and depicts the feelings of estrangement experienced by individuals in modern society. Haneke has made films in French, German, and English and has worked in television and theatre. He also teaches film direction at the Film Academy Vienna.
Benoît Magimel is a French actor. He was 14 when he appeared in his first film, and has starred in a variety of roles in French cinema. At age 16, Magimel left school to pursue acting as a career. In 2001, he won the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival for his role in Michael Haneke's The Piano Teacher. He also starred in Claude Chabrol's La Demoiselle d'honneur.
Virginie Efira is a Belgian and French actress. She had her first leading role in the romantic comedy It Boy (2013). Efira subsequently received critical praise for her performance in the comedy drama In Bed with Victoria (2016), for which she received a Magritte Award for Best Actress as well as a César Award for Best Actress nomination. She then appeared in Paul Verhoeven's psychological thriller Elle (2016), the drama An Impossible Love (2018), the comedy drama Sibyl (2019) and the black comedy Bye Bye Morons (2020). In 2023, she won a César Award for Best Actress for Paris Memories (2022).

Amour is a 2012 drama film written and directed by Michael Haneke, starring Jean-Louis Trintignant, Emmanuelle Riva and Isabelle Huppert. The narrative focuses on an elderly couple, Anne and Georges, who are retired music teachers with a daughter who lives abroad. Anne has a stroke that paralyses the right side of her body. The film is an international co-production among the French, German, and Austrian companies Les Films du Losange, X-Filme Creative Pool, and Wega Film.
In Another Country is a 2012 South Korean comedy-drama film written and directed by Hong Sang-soo. Set in a seaside town, the film consists of three parts that tell the story of three women, all named Anne and all played by French actress Isabelle Huppert. The film competed for the Palme d'Or at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. The film was selected as part of the 2013 Hong Kong International Film Festival.
Valley of Love is a 2015 French film directed by Guillaume Nicloux, starring Gérard Depardieu and Isabelle Huppert. It tells the story of two French people who used to be a couple and had a son 31 years ago. They reunite after the son's death, having received a letter asking them to visit five places in Death Valley, which will make the son reappear. The film was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. The film won the César Award for Best Cinematography at the 41st César Awards.
Things to Come is a 2016 drama film written and directed by Mia Hansen-Løve. It stars Isabelle Huppert as Nathalie Chazeaux, a middle-aged philosophy professor whose life undergoes a series of changes. The film explores the themes of aging, family ties, intellectual passion, and personal freedom.
Elle is a 2016 psychological thriller film directed by Paul Verhoeven from a screenplay by David Birke, based on the 2012 novel Oh... by Philippe Djian. The film stars Isabelle Huppert as a businesswoman who is raped in her home by a masked assailant.
Happy End is a 2017 drama film written and directed by Michael Haneke, and starring Isabelle Huppert and Jean-Louis Trintignant, who had also played daughter and father in Haneke's 2012 film Amour.
Claire's Camera is a 2017 drama film written, produced, and directed by Hong Sang-soo and starring Isabelle Huppert and Kim Min-hee. It had its world premiere in the Special Screening section of the 2017 Cannes Film Festival and released in France on 7 March 2018.
