This is a list of social nudity places in South America used for recreation.
This list includes topfree beaches, clothing-optional beaches (or nude beaches) and some resorts. Topfree beaches allow women to sunbathe without a bikini top or other clothing above the waist. Clothing-optional beaches allow either sex to sunbathe with or without clothing above or below the waist. A nude beach may also be an obligatory nude area, which means that both sexes are obliged to go without clothing above as well as below the waist.
Public nudity is a misdemeanor in Brazil, except in places officially designated by the local authority.
Although there are no official nude beaches throughout the state of São Paulo, naturism is commonly practiced in the following areas:
Note: Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro is not a nude beach, despite its depiction as such in the 1984 motion picture Blame It on Rio .
Unlike public beaches, these are private properties that allow the public.
Naturism is a lifestyle of practicing non-sexual social nudity in private and in public; the word also refers to the cultural movement which advocates and defends that lifestyle. Both may alternatively be called nudism. Though the two terms are broadly interchangeable, nudism emphasizes the practice of nudity, whilst naturism highlights an attitude favoring harmony with nature and respect for the environment, into which that practice is integrated. That said, naturists come from a range of philosophical and cultural backgrounds; there is no single naturist ideology.
Santos, officially Municipality of Estância Balneária de Santos, is a municipality in the Brazilian state of São Paulo, founded in 1546 by the Portuguese nobleman Brás Cubas. It is located mostly on the island of São Vicente, which harbors both the city of Santos and the city of São Vicente, and partially on the mainland. It is the main city in the metropolitan region of Baixada Santista. The population is 433,656 in an area of 280.67 km2 (108.37 sq mi). The city is home to the Coffee Museum, where world coffee prices were once negotiated. There is also a football memorial, dedicated to the city's greatest players, which includes Pelé, who spent the majority of his career with Santos Futebol Clube. Its beachfront garden, 5,335 m (5,834 yd) in length, figures in Guinness World Records as the largest beachfront garden in the world.
Topfreedom is a cultural and political movement seeking changes in laws to allow women to be topless in public places where men are permitted to be barechested, as a form of gender equality. Specifically, the movement seeks the repeal or overturning of laws which restrict a woman's right not to have her chest covered at all times in public.
Guarujá is a municipality in the São Paulo state of Brazil. It is part of the Metropolitan Region of Baixada Santista. The population is 311,116 in an area of 143.58 km2 (55.44 sq mi). This place name comes from the Tupi language, and means "narrow path". The population is highly urbanized, forms a 2nd urban core and beachfront island across the river from São Vicente Island, the island is coterminous with the municipality, with exception of small offshore isles like Ilha dos Arvoredos.
Caraguatatuba, widely known by its abbreviation Caraguá, is a city in the eastern part of the southern state of São Paulo in Brazil. It is part of the Metropolitan Region of Vale do Paraíba e Litoral Norte. The population is 123,389 in an area of 485.10 km2. Caraguatatuba is the largest city of São Paulo's north shore. The economy of the Caraguatatuba is driven by agriculture and tourism. The urban area and farmlands are within the coastline and valley areas, the majority of the northern part are heavily forested and rarely serves any roads to that area. The postal boundary dividing the 00000s and the 10000s lies to the southwestern boundary with Salesópolis.
Itanhaém is a municipality in the state of São Paulo in Brazil. It is part of the Metropolitan Region of Baixada Santista. The population is 103,102 in an area of 601.85 km². The elevation is 4 m.
Ubatuba is a Brazilian municipality, located on the southeast coast, in the state of São Paulo. It is part of the Metropolitan Region of Vale do Paraíba e Litoral Norte. The population is 92,819 in an area of 723.88 km2, of which 83% is located in the Serra do Mar State Park.
Playa Zipolite is a beach community located in San Pedro Pochutla municipality on the southern coast of Oaxaca state in Mexico between Huatulco and Puerto Escondido.
Morro de São Paulo is one of 5 villages of the island of Tinharé in the municipality of Cairu, located in the state of Bahia, Brazil. The main beaches of the Morro de São Paulo are located on east side of the island. They are: Primeira Praia, Segunda Praia, Terceira Praia, Quarta Praia and Quinta Praia. The settlement was home to a large Tumpinamba population prior to the arrival of the Portuguese. A Portuguese colony was established as early as 1535. The settlement is a site of large-scale tourism, and has three registered historic sites.
Nude recreation consists of recreational activities which some people engage in while nude. Historically, the ancient Olympic Games were nude events. There remain some societies in Africa, Oceania, and South America that continue to engage in everyday public activities—including sports—without clothes, while in most of the world nude activities take place in either private spaces or separate clothing optional areas in public spaces. Occasional events, such as nude bike rides, may occur in public areas where nudity is not otherwise allowed.
Tourism is a growing sector and key to the economy of several regions of Brazil. The country had 6.589 million visitors in 2018, ranking in terms of the international tourist arrivals as the second main destination in South America after Argentina and third in Latin America after Mexico and Argentina. Revenues from international tourists reached US$5.8 billion in 2015, continuing a recovery trend from the 2008–2009 economic crisis.
Costa Verde is a coastline in Brazil, which runs from Itaguaí, Rio de Janeiro state, to Santos, São Paulo state. In São Paulo it is known as litoral norte. Brazil's Costa Verde is characterized by the Serra do Mar escarpment reaching Atlantic Ocean, creating a mountainous landscape very near the coast. It can be considered the greatest extension of Atlantic Forest biome reaching the ocean, between Baixada Fluminense and Baixada Santista.
The coastline of Brazil measures 7,491 km, making it the 16th longest national coastline in the world. The coastline touches exclusively the Atlantic Ocean. Brazil's coastline has many geographical features such as islands, reefs, bays, and its 2,095 beaches.
São Miguel do Gostoso is a municipality in the state of Rio Grande do Norte in the Northeast region of Brazil.
Poupatempo is a project created and implemented by the São Paulo State government, during the administration of Mário Covas, in 1996. The service offers in one place more than 400 services related to official documents, from the emission of ID Cards and Driver's License, to Employment record books, among others. Currently, there are 100 facilities across the state of São Paulo. The program also has online services starting in 2020, currently offering 184 services on the official website or smartphone app.
Naturism in Uruguay is practiced at least since the 1960s, firstly by foreigners coming to Uruguay and later by Uruguayan naturists. It is being practiced on the two officially designated naturist beaches : Chihuahua beach in Maldonado that is the most known, and the other is La Sirena Beach in Rocha.
Naturism in Argentina is the movement supporting the practice of social nudism in the country. It began to be regularly performed in 1934, and it is being practiced nowadays, despite still being a taboo topic in the Argentine society. The most important nudist destinations include Escondida Beach, Querandí Beach, and Eden club in Buenos Aires Province, as well as Yatan Rumi in the Córdoba sierras.
