This is a list of places where social nudity is practised in North America for recreation. This listing includes notable nude beaches and private resorts. This listing also includes places where female toplessness is permitted in jurisdictions where it is normally forbidden.
Nude bathing on beaches is illegal in Anguilla. [1] [2]
British Columbia has thousands of kilometres of coastline and thousands of lakes, as well as millions of hectares of natural parks and undeveloped land. The vast majority of these areas are mostly uninhabited and nude swimming and sunbathing can be done with little concern for disturbing others. In the populated areas, particularly the Lower Mainland, Greater Victoria, and the Okanagan, nudity is generally practiced only in certain established or isolated locations (usually beaches) and on private properties.
All areas of Ontario, unless otherwise specified by town or city by-laws, allow both males and females to be topless in public.
The city of Toronto permits nudity at public events, such as the World Pride Parade and the World Naked Bike Ride.
There are no officially recognized nude beaches in the province, but there are places that have secluded areas where nudity is accepted. [37]
The following beaches [4] in the French Antilles.
Toplessness is common on most beaches. Nudity is encountered at:
Toplessness is permitted on all beaches on the French side of the island, but many secluded beaches attract nude sunbathers.
While toplessness is accepted, there are no public nude beaches and few clothing-optional resorts. [48]
Beach nudity in Playa Zipolite, Mexico is legal. [49] Elsewhere, Mexican law condemns only "immorality" and thus the issue ends up being a matter of the judge's criteria.
Curaçao has no legal nude beaches. There are several beaches on the west end of the island that allow topless sunbathing. [62]
Additional and up-to-date information on public and private locations may be obtained on the web sites of the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) [66] and The Naturist Society (TNS). [67]

Public nudity is illegal in Alaska. [69] Toplessness is legal when practiced without the intention of offending others. [70]
Public nudity is illegal in Arizona, but may not be enforced at hot springs.
Public nudity is illegal in Arkansas in the presence of the opposite sex; however, same-sex nudity is legal in Arkansas. [82] [83]
Female toplessness is allowed in the cities of Denver, Boulder and Fort Collins, since these cities do not make any distinction between female toplessness and male bare chested. [109] On February 15, 2019, The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of Free the Nipple as to female toplessness being equal to male toplessness. This decision legalized female toplessness in the state. [110]
Public nudity is legal in Kansas, in all jurisdictions, under state law. [174]
Female toplessness is allowed throughout the state, since Maine's law only prohibits the public exposure of the genitals. Local ordinances may restrict toplessness & nudity. [184]
Simple nudity in Montana is not necessarily against the law, but nudity can be considered indecent exposure if accompanied by any sexual activity or any activity intending to affront or alarm another or for sexual gratification. However, many towns and municipalities have separate ordinances restricting nudity within town and city limits.
Due to a 1992 Court of Appeals ruling (People v. Santorelli et al.), women may be topless anywhere in the state of New York for non-commercial purposes. (A concurring minority opinion reached the constitutional, i.e., equal rights issue, but the majority decision did not.)
Public nudity is considered indecent exposure in North Carolina under * § 14–190.9 which states that
"(a) Unless the conduct is punishable under subsection (a1) of this section, any person who shall willfully expose the private parts of his or her person in any public place and in the presence of any other person or persons, except for those places designated for a public purpose where the same sex exposure is incidental to a permitted activity, or aids or abets in any such act, or who procures another to perform such act; or any person, who as owner, manager, lessee, director, promoter or agent, or in any other capacity knowingly hires, leases or permits the land, building, or premises of which he is owner, lessee or tenant, or over which he has control, to be used for purposes of any such act, shall be guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor." [247]
Social nudity places in North Carolina include:
Public nudity is illegal in North Dakota. [252] Topless sunbathing is not illegal in North Dakota. [253]
Public nudity is generally legal in Oregon, unless it is part of a commercial venture or intended to induce sexual excitement. Some parts of Oregon (including Portland, Eugene, Ashland and Happy Valley) have local laws prohibiting public nudity. However, Oregon law defines nudity as displaying genitals, hence both men and women are allowed to be topfree in public throughout the state. [259] [260]
Texas has no laws forbidding female toplessness, although in most parts of the state topless women may be charged with disorderly conduct. Austin tolerates female toplessness within its city limits.
Vermont state law prohibits disrobing in public but does not prohibit public nudity, so nudity is allowed anywhere that it has not been specifically prohibited by a city or town. The city of Burlington, for example, has prohibited nudity in public parks, but nudity is allowed anywhere else in the city. [287] Specific locations at which individuals practice social nudity include:
Naturism is a lifestyle of practicing non-sexual social nudity in private and in public; the word also refers to the cultural movement which advocates and defends that lifestyle. Both may alternatively be called nudism. Though the two terms are broadly interchangeable, nudism emphasizes the practice of nudity, whilst naturism highlights an attitude favoring harmony with nature and respect for the environment, into which that practice is integrated. That said, naturists come from a range of philosophical and cultural backgrounds; there is no single naturist ideology.
The American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) is a naturist organization based in the United States.
Hanlan's Point Beach is a nude beach on the western side of the Toronto Islands in Toronto, Ontario on the shore of Lake Ontario.
Social nudity is the practice of nudity in relatively public settings not restricted by gender. This occurs both in public spaces and on commercial property, such as at a naturist resort.
Gay naturism or LGBT naturism concerns a lifestyle of gay people in which nudity, especially in a communal context, is viewed as natural, positive and healthy. While naturist clubs and resorts in the United States date back to the 1930s, gay naturist organizations did not emerge until the early 1980s. Separate from official naturist clubs, gay individuals have long congregated in locally-known gay beaches in many countries, especially in Europe and North America.
Nude recreation consists of recreational activities which some people engage in while nude. Historically, the ancient Olympic Games were nude events. There remain some societies in Africa, Oceania, and South America that continue to engage in everyday public activities—including sports—without clothes, while in most of the world nude activities take place in either private spaces or separate clothing optional areas in public spaces. Occasional events, such as nude bike rides, may occur in public areas where nudity is not otherwise allowed.
Nudity is sometimes used as a tactic during a protest to attract media and public attention to a cause, and sometimes promotion of public nudity is itself the objective of a nude protest. The practice was first documented in the 1650s with Quakers "naked as a sign" practice. Later the tactic was used by svobodniki in Canada in 1903, and photographs of their nude protests have been published. The tactic has been used by other groups later in the century, especially after the 1960s. Like public nudity in general, the cultural and legal acceptance of nudity as a tactic in protest also varies around the world. Some opponents of any public nudity claim that it is indecent, especially when it can be viewed by children; while others argue that it is a legitimate form of expression covered by the right to free speech.
A nude beach, sometimes called a clothing-optional or free beach, is a beach where users are at liberty to be nude. Nude beaches usually have mixed bathing. Such beaches are usually on public lands, and any member of the public is allowed to use the facilities without membership in any movement or subscription to any personal belief. The use of the beach facilities is normally anonymous. Unlike a naturist resort or facility, there is normally no membership or vetting requirement for the use of a nude beach. The use of nude beach facilities is usually casual, not requiring pre-booking. Nude beaches may be official, unofficial, or illegal.
This timeline of social nudity shows the varying degrees of acceptance given to the naked human body by diverse cultures throughout history. The events listed here demonstrate how various societies have shifted between strict and lax clothing standards, how nudity has played a part in social movements and protest, and how the nude human body is accepted in the public sphere.
Bare Oaks Family Naturist Park is a naturist resort located in southern Ontario, about 40 kilometres (25 mi) from Toronto. It encompasses typical amenities for day users, 110 serviced campsites, five cabins, and five guest rooms. The club is situated on 50 acres (20 ha) of privately owned, forested land at the edge of the Oak Ridges Moraine, within the Ontario Greenbelt. Harrison Creek borders the northern boundary while the Black River bisects the property. There are also two ponds and a small lake.
Lighthouse Beach is a small section of the Fire Island National Seashore that is adjacent to Robert Moses State Park on New York's Long Island. It was notable for having sections that were officially designated as clothing optional prior to 2013.
Felicity Jones is an American naturist who blogs pseudonymously for Young Naturists America. She is from Newton, New Jersey and is known for her activism in the nudism and feminism movements.
Naturism in the United States is the practice of social nudity as a lifestyle that seeks an alternative to the majority view of American society that considers nakedness and sexuality to be taboo based upon the legacy of Puritan and Victorian attitudes. Enthusiasm for naturism began in the late 1920s with the establishment of members-only communities where naturists could gather to socialize and enjoy recreation without clothing in an environment that was no more sexual than that experienced while clothed. In later decades some groups began advocating for more general acceptance, and the opening up of public land to clothing-optional recreation.
A naturist resort or nudist resort is an establishment that provides accommodation and other amenities for guests in a context where they are invited to practise naturism – that is, a lifestyle of non-sexual social nudity. A smaller, more rustic, or more basic naturist resort may be called a naturist camp.

Zipolite is a small, little-known town on the Pacific coast of Mexico. It not only boasts being the only legal nude beach in Mexico, but is often likened to a town stuck in the 1960s. With the entire beach being clothing-optional, it is unlike anywhere else I have ever had the pleasure of visiting.

Paradise Valley Resort and Club, Dawsonville, Ga, is a family resort and club, but tends to be an older crowd. Three years ago, Joe Lettelleir, a St. Petersburg, Fla., developer, purchased the resort and made major improvements to the tune of a $32 million construction of 152 condominium units and 45 town homes. Lettelleir already has built a new clubhouse and indoor pool.
On weekends, the Valley's three pools are standing-room only, and the diner (motto: "No top, no shoes, no problem") is packed.
Is Camp Gaea a Nudist Camp? NO, Camp Gaea is designed as a recreational retreat center for the purpose of cultural and spiritual education. As such, the camp promotes tolerance, acceptance and respect between groups and individuals. We neither promote nor discourage nudity as it is a personal and spiritual choice. However, clothing is required in many places, such as in public buildings, on or along the main access roads, and open areas adjacent to property fence lines. As such, if you are walking and enjoying Gaea, you should have suitable clothing to cover when in areas where required as well as provide some clothing or material to sit on.
While certainly not common, recreational areas for nudists are not unheard of in Missouri and Kansas. There is Show Me Acres, the aptly named resort in Stover. In Kansas, the Sandy Lane Club in Hutchinson and Prairie Haven in Scranton are, like Show Me Acres, members of the American Association for Nude Recreation and offer resort- or campground-type settings.
Locally, there is a group of Kansas City area nudists called the Heartland Naturists. They get together for regular swims and an annual 5-kilometer run.
