Wolfgang Ketterle is a German physicist and professor of physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His research has focused on experiments that trap and cool atoms to temperatures close to absolute zero, and he led one of the first groups to realize Bose–Einstein condensation in these systems in 1995. For this achievement, as well as early fundamental studies of condensates, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2001, together with Eric Allin Cornell and Carl Wieman.

In mathematics, the Jacobsthal numbers are an integer sequence named after the German mathematician Ernst Jacobsthal. Like the related Fibonacci numbers, they are a specific type of Lucas sequence for which P = 1, and Q = −2—and are defined by a similar recurrence relation: in simple terms, the sequence starts with 0 and 1, then each following number is found by adding the number before it to twice the number before that. The first Jacobsthal numbers are:

<span class="mw-page-title-main">MMP8</span> Protein-coding gene in the species Homo sapiens

Neutrophil collagenase, also known as matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) or PMNL collagenase (MNL-CL), is a collagen cleaving enzyme which is present in the connective tissue of most mammals. In humans, the MMP-8 protein is encoded by the MMP8 gene. The gene is part of a cluster of MMP genes which localize to chromosome 11q22.3. Most MMP's are secreted as inactive proproteins which are activated when cleaved by extracellular proteinases. However, the enzyme encoded by this gene is stored in secondary granules within neutrophils and is activated by autolytic cleavage.

A xunfu was an important imperial Chinese provincial office under both the Ming and Qing dynasties. However, the purview of the office under the two dynasties differed markedly. IGR J17329-2731 as described by European Space Agency astronomers is a single faint transient X-ray source observed with Swift/XRT on 16 August 2017 from 2:26 to 2:45 UTC with an effective exposure of time of 1 ks. It was detected within the positional uncertainty provided by INTEGRAL IBIS imagery. It was described as the birth of a symbiotic X-ray binary, a "first" in the lifecycle of an interacting binary star, or a zombie neutron star brought back to life by its neighboring red giant. When first described in 2017, it was seen as an X-ray flare "from an unknown source" in the direction from the galactic center.
