Lound is a village in Nottinghamshire, England, four miles north of Retford. It has a population of 493, [1] reducing to 471 at the 2011 census. [2] The village is of Danish origin dating from the 8th century with a street (Town Street) running along the spine of the village, leading on to Lound Low Road. The oldest houses are tofts which are endways on to the street with strips of land running back from the road. [3] Nearby villages are Sutton cum Lound and Mattersey.
Lound is situated on a rise of land next to the flood plain of the river Idle. This has created large deposits of sand and gravel on the east side of the village. [4]
Activities at Lound are water skiing, fishing, horse riding, walking, bird watching. Some of these are situated in and around the open waters created by sand and gravel workings. Wetlands Wildfowl Reserve is situated on the outskirts of the village and there are also reserves belonging to Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust and Daneshill Lakes recreation area nearby. The Lound Bird Club records bird life using the gravel quarries and surrounding woodland and farmland in this section of the River Idle Valley. Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust has extended its ownership at its Idle Valley Nature Reserve and runs a programme of community focussed events from the Idle Valley Rural Learning Centre operated by North Nottinghamshire College.
Pleasleylisten (help·info) is a village and civil parish with parts in both Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. It lies between Chesterfield and Mansfield, 5 miles (8 km) south east of Bolsover, Derbyshire, England and 2.5 miles (4 km) north west of Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. The River Idle is a river in Nottinghamshire, England whose source is the confluence of the River Maun and River Meden near Markham Moor. The Idle flows north from its source through Retford and Bawtry before entering the River Trent at West Stockwith. Its main tributaries are the River Poulter and the River Ryton. The river is navigable to Bawtry, and there is a statutory right of navigation to Retford. Most of the land surrounding the river is a broad flood plain and the river is important for conservation, with Sites of Special Scientific Interest being designated along its course.

Croxall Lakes is a nature reserve located between the villages of Croxall and Alrewas, Staffordshire, in the United Kingdom. The nature reserve comprises two lakes and grassland between them. The lakes were formed through the quarrying of sand and gravel deposits, these excavations subsequently flooded and were then restored to create the nature reserve. The site is managed by Staffordshire Wildlife Trust and owned by the National Forest Company. The reserve is an important stop off point for a wide variety of migrating birds due to its location at the meeting point of three rivers, the Trent, Tame and Mease.

The nature reserve is situated along the western bank of the River Idle and east of the villages of Sutton cum Lound and Lound. The nature reserve is managed by the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust.
