Mezhathur is an Indian village in the state of Kerala situated at Pattambi taluk of Palakkad district at the border of Thrissur, Malappuram and Palakkad districts. It is a historical and cultural village in Kerala. It is also the native place of renowned writer and social reformer V. T. Bhattathiripad. [1]
Mezhathur got the name from Mezhathol Agnihothri. Agnihothri was the first child of the famous Parayi Petta Panthirukulam (12 children born from the Pariah woman), as the son of Vararuchi.
Mezhathur is located 8 km (5 mi) from Pattambi in between Koottanad and Thrithala. Mezhathur, known as vedic village is a hilly region with herbs, fruits, valleys, lake and brooks.
It comes under the Thrithala block with M. B. Rajesh as the Legislative Assembly representative, while the Parliament's representative is Mr. MP Abdusamad Samadani (Ponnani).
Mezhathur has similar climatic conditions prevalent elsewhere the state: a dry season from December through February, a hot season from March through May; the Southwest Monsoon from June through September and the North East Monsoon from October through November. The South West Monsoon is usually very heavy and is responsible for nearly 75% of the annual rainfall. The dry season is generally hot and humid, with temperature varying between 22 °C and 35 °C. The average annual rainfall is 2800 mm.
Airports : Calicut & Cochin International Airport s are at almost the same distance from Mezhathur (about a two-hour drive). While Coimbatore airport in Tamil Nadu state is about 125 km (78 mi) away.
Railways : The nearest Railway station is Pattambi (about 8 km), while Kuttippuram is 15 km (9 mi).
Roads : Mezhathur is located actually between two major highways. The Main road connecting 3 km (2 mi) in Koottanad the state Highway (SH 39) Guruvayoor - Palakkad and Thrithala Main Road (2 km) connecting Ponnani-Palakkad Highway. The new bridge ( Velliyankallu bridge ) reduces the distance from Thrissur to Kozhikode by 11 km (7 mi). this road also crossing Mezhathur center .
Buses : All major long-route buses stop at Koottanad Junction.
Local Transport : Auto-rickshaws, Cars, etc. are available at every road and at all major junctions they have their slots. Smaller buses ply on regular intervals to the internal locations, as there are narrow roads.
The Mezhathur Higher secondary School started in 1973, has been on a path of revival for the past 10 years with elimination of campus politics/elections. Past few years the SSLC and pass percentage have been one of the highest, it has started +2 education level with new buildings. Recently the school has got a modern play-ground/auditorium. The name of Mezhathur Higher secondary School has been changed V. T. Bhattathiripad Memorial Higher secondary School.
The population consists of mainly Muslims and Hindus. February month Pooram and Nercha festival season .
This Shiva Temple is situated at Mezhathur in Palakkad District, Kerala State, India. The Shiva Linga is supposed to have been installed by Agnihothri the eldest son of Sage Vararuchi. The history traces the period to the 4th Century Circa. There are great many historians who are working on the subject. To this day all the 12 families of Sage Vararuchi assemble once in year to pay homage to the departed souls of their Family.
The Shiva Linga is a massive piece of stone of more than 3 feet in height. According to Vasthu sasthra the bigger the Linga the greater is its influence to its surroundings. This temple was looked after by Kaithara Variam members. The Bharathappuzha, also known as the Nila or Ponnani River, is a river in the Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. With a length of 209 km, it is the second longest river that flows through Kerala after the Periyar. It flows through Palakkad Gap, which is also the largest opening in the Kerala portion of Western Ghats. The Nila has groomed the culture and life of South Malabar part of Kerala. It is also referred to as the "Peraar" in ancient scripts and documents. River Bharathapuzha is an interstate river and lifeline water source for a population residing in four administrative districts, namely Malappuram and Palakkad districts, and parts of Palakkad-Thrissur district border of Kerala and Coimbatore, and Tiruppur of Tamil Nadu. Kumbidi is a village in Pattambi taluk of Palakkad district in the Indian state of Kerala. It is the administrative headquarters and main commercial centre of Anakkara Panchayath. It is situated opposite to Kuttippuram town and adjacent to Thavanur and Tirunavaya towns. Kumbidi town area extends from town centre to the surrounding areas such as Ummathur, Thottazhiyam, Perumbalam, Panniyur, Puramathilssery, Maniyam Perumbalam and Melazhiyam. Pattambi taluk is bounded by Ottapalam Taluk of Palakkad district to the east, Ponnani taluk of Malappuram district to the west, Tirur and Perinthalmanna Taluks of Malappuram district to the north, and Kunnamkulam Taluk of Thrissur district to the south.
Trithala Maha Siva Temple is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is situated on the banks of the Bharathappuzha river at Thrithala of Palakkad District in Kerala state in India. References to this temple are found in Aithihyamala of Kottarathil Sankunni and many classics of Malayalam Literature. The place where the idol is worshiped in the temple resembles the addition of sand. Legend has it that the Shiva Linga was made by Agnihotri by using the sand from Bharathapuzha river. Anointing is not performed because it is a Shivling of sand. The Shivalinga sits slightly oblique, as the mother of Agnihotri held on to the force, there was a slight tilt. The temple is a part of the 108 famous Shiva temples in Kerala. According to historians, the Trithala Siva Temple, built in the 9th or 10th century, marks the transition from Chola to Pandya style architecture.
South Malabar refers to a geographical area of the southwestern coast of India covering some parts of the present-day Kerala state. South Malabar covers the regions included in present-day Kozhikode taluk of Kozhikode district, Wayanad district excluding Mananthavady taluk, the whole area of Malappuram district, Chavakkad taluk of Thrissur district, and Palakkad district, excluding parts of Chittur taluk. The Fort Kochi region of Kochi city also historically belongs to South Malabar. The term South Malabar refers to the region of the erstwhile Malabar District south to the river Korapuzha, and bears a high cultural similarity to both the Cochin and the North Malabar regions.
