The money room, in New York City Transit Authority parlance, refers to a formerly highly secure Second floor within the NYCTA headquarters at 370 Jay Street [1] that handled cash collected in the system and recycled tokens formerly used throughout the automated fare collection system.
A fictionalized account of the money room, and a cash-carrying work train called the "money train", and official called a revenue collection train; have been featured in a film. The old facility, located at 370 Jay Street in Downtown Brooklyn, was decommissioned in 2006.
This facility had a direct connections via tunnels to small docks on the subway system, one route each for each division: IRT, BMT and IND that ran closest to 370 Jay Street and thereby allowing the money train to stop and drop off collected cash and pick up bags of tokens for distribution to token booths throughout the system.
Only the IND Division unloading dock could be seen from public vantage point in the Jay Street - Borough Hall Station. The other two locations were located between stations out of public view.)
From these loading and unloading dock doors led to corridors in the basement of 370 Jay Street, and in turn led to a direct freight elevator from the basement corridors to the money room the second floor. [2]
The Money Room was also where blank MetroCards were encoded on the High Throughput Encoding Machine.
Prior to the construction of 370 Jay Street; revenue was collected by armored truck and brought to the money room at 250 Hudson Street; which was leased by the Board of Transportation - City of New York from the Federal Government.
The functions of the money room have been moved to a "consolidated revenue facility", located in Maspeth, Queens. This new location serves all of the different constituent transportation agencies, not just the subway system. It processes the cash received at bridge and tunnel facilities also. It is not subway-accessible, so cash and MetroCards are today distributed via specialized armored trucks.
While popularly believed that the Money Room was a "secret", this is a popular misconception as its purpose and location have been known to the public since its construction (New York Times, March 31, 1951) and when the $300,000 embezzlement took place in July 1979 (New York Times, New York Daily News); as well as known to employees, both those credentialed for work in the money room; as well as other transit employees from other departments.

The IND Eighth Avenue Line is a rapid transit line in New York City, United States, and is part of the B Division of the New York City Subway. Opened in 1932, it was the first line of the Independent Subway System (IND); as such, New Yorkers originally applied the Eighth Avenue Subway name to the entire IND system.
The Kingston–Throop Avenues station is a local station on the IND Fulton Street Line of the New York City Subway. Located on Fulton Street between Kingston and Throop Avenues in Bedford–Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, it is served by the C train at all times except nights, when the A train takes over service.

The 47th–50th Streets–Rockefeller Center station is an express station on the IND Sixth Avenue Line of the New York City Subway. It is located along Sixth Avenue between 47th and 50th Streets, on the west side of Rockefeller Center. The station is served by the D and F trains at all times, the B and M trains on weekdays, and the <F> train during rush hours in the peak direction. In 2019, it was the 12th busiest subway station in the system.
The fares for services operated under the brands of MTA Regional Bus, New York City Subway, Staten Island Railway (SIR), PATH, Roosevelt Island Tramway, AirTrain JFK, NYC Ferry, and the suburban bus operators Nassau Inter-County Express (NICE) and Westchester County Bee-Line System (Bee-Line) are listed below. As of 2024, most bus routes, the subway, the Staten Island Railway, and the Roosevelt Island Tramway charge a $2.90 fare; a higher fare is charged for ferries, express buses, and the AirTrain JFK.
The New York City Subway's B Division consists of the lines that operate with lettered services, as well as the Franklin Avenue and Rockaway Park Shuttles. These lines and services were operated by the Brooklyn–Manhattan Transit Corporation (BMT) and city-owned Independent Subway System (IND) before the 1940 city takeover of the BMT. B Division rolling stock is wider, longer, and heavier than those of the A Division, measuring 10 or 9.75 ft by 60 or 75 ft.
The Lexington Avenue/51st Street station is a New York City Subway station complex on the IRT Lexington Avenue Line and IND Queens Boulevard Line. The station is located on Lexington Avenue and stretches from 51st Street to 53rd Street in Midtown Manhattan. It is served by the 6 and E trains at all times; the M train on weekdays during the day; the <6> train during weekdays in the peak direction; and the 4 train during late nights.
The Jay Street–MetroTech station is a New York City Subway station complex on the IND Fulton Street, IND Culver, and BMT Fourth Avenue lines. The complex is located in the vicinity of MetroTech Center in Downtown Brooklyn. It is served by the A, F, and R trains at all times; the C train at all times except late nights; the N train during late nights only; and a few rush-hour W and <F> trains in the peak direction.
The New York City Board of Transportation or the Board of Transportation of the City of New York was a city transit commission and operator in New York City, consisting of three members appointed by the mayor. It was created in 1924 to control city-owned and operated public transportation service within the New York City Transit System. The agency oversaw the construction and operation of the municipal Independent Subway System (IND), which was constructed shortly after the Board was chartered. The BOT later presided over the major transfers of public transit from private control to municipal control that took place in the 1940s, including the unification of the New York City Subway in 1940. In 1953, the Board was dissolved and replaced by the state-operated New York City Transit Authority, now part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).
370 Jay Street, also called the Transportation Building or Transit Building, is a building located at the northwest corner of Jay Street and Willoughby Street within the MetroTech Center complex in Downtown Brooklyn, New York City. The site is bounded by Pearl Street to the west, and was formerly bound by Myrtle Avenue at its north end; this portion of the street has since been de-mapped.
Since the late 20th century, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has started several projects to maintain and improve the New York City Subway. Some of these projects, such as subway line automation, proposed platform screen doors, the FASTRACK maintenance program, and infrastructural improvements proposed in 2015–2019 Capital Program, contribute toward improving the system's efficiency. Others, such as train-arrival "countdown clocks", "Help Point" station intercoms, "On the Go! Travel Station" passenger kiosks, wireless and cellular network connections in stations, MetroCard fare payment alternatives, and digital ads, are meant to benefit individual passengers. Yet others, including the various methods of subway construction, do not directly impact the passenger interface, but are used to make subway operations efficient.
