Mother Father Brother Sister is the debut album by Japanese singer and songwriter Misia, released on June 24, 1998, by Arista Japan. It was produced by Haruo Yoda and Hiroto Tanigawa and recorded between 1997 and 1998. Mother Father Brother Sister is commonly noted as being one of the first mainstream Japanese pop albums to incorporate elements of African-American music such as soul music, gospel, and contemporary R&B.
Mother Father Brother Sister was positively reviewed by music critics, who praised Misia's vocal performance and the record's compositions. Commercially, the record found massive success in Japan, reaching number one on the Oricon Albums Chart and earning a double million certification by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) for selling over two million copies nationwide. The album is the seventh best-selling debut album of all time in Japan, and the country's 38th best-selling album overall. It won the Best Album Award at the 40th Japan Record Awards at the end of the same year.
Mother Father Brother Sister spawned two singles, "Tsutsumikomu Yō ni..." and "Hi no Ataru Basho." Both the singles performed well in Japan, with the former becoming one of Misia's signature songs. The album is retrospectively seen as paving the way for bringing R&B into the Japanese mainstream.
After being entranced by Lauryn Hill on the movie Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993) at sixteen, Misia received vocal lessons from an African-American voice tutor and began performing at clubs in her hometown and in Tokyo. [1] After graduating from high school in 1997, she moved to Tokyo and applied for various auditions and sent documents to record companies in order to become a singer. [2] [3] At age 18, Misia was scouted by Haruo Yoda at an audition in Kyushu. [4] Yoda wanted to give her a stage name; Jun Sasaki, who worked on the album, wrote "To Misha-chan" on the tape of a song he was making, twisting her real name, and Yoda thought "Misha would be a good name." [4] The stage name at first was Mishia, but Yoda didn't like how it was spelled, so the spelling was rearranged into Misia so the "I"s would be symmetrical. [4]
Mother Father Brother Sister is the first album in mainstream Japanese pop music that incorporates many elements of African-American music such as soul music, gospel, and contemporary R&B. [5] When this album was released, Japan was in the midst of the third band boom, and the top sellers were rock bands such as B'z, Glay, L'Arc~en~Ciel, and Luna Sea; the only popular artist who leaned toward R&B was Namie Amuro, but her fourth album, Concentration 20 (1997), is said to have a strong rock and electronic flavor. [5] Mother Father Brother Sister includes the album version of the first single "Tsutsumikomu Youni..." and the second single "Hi no Ataru Basho" as well as their respective B-side songs. "Never Gonna Cry! Strings Overture" is a instrumental string version of "Never Gonna Cry!" that lasts for approximately 53 seconds. [6] "K.I.T" is a dance tune that features a huge display of whistle notes. [7] "Koisuru Kisetsu" is a medium-tempo number that expresses the hope that fills the heart and the yearning love that hints at a bit of anxiety through the soft, sad strumming of an acoustic guitar. [7] "I'm Over Here (Kizuite)" is a sad love song with a club-friendly R&B sound and careful singing style. [7] "Tell Me" is a Western-style love song with an off-beat rhythm that creates a unique groove. Mother Father Brother Sister was released by Arista Japan on June 24, 1998. [6] The record was also released in Taiwan by BMG Music Taiwan Inc., with the Taiwanese edition containing a Misia mini poster with Chinese track listing on the back and an extra CD-Case with Misia postcards. [8] Misia went to Hawaii to take photos for the jackets of her second single "Hi no Ataru Basho" and first album Mother Father Brother Sister. [9] This was Misia's third trip overseas, following her visit to New York last year for recording. [9] The album artwork for Mother Father Brother Sister was photographed by Yoshie Tominaga, with Toshiyuki Shinke designing its booklet. Mother Father Brother Sister spawned two singles. "Tsutsumikomu Yō ni..." was released as Misia's debut single on February 21, 1998, in three formats: a 8cm mini CD single, [11] a 12cm CD single, [12] and a 12-inch vinyl limited to 5,000 copies. [13] The 8cm version peaked at number eleven on the Oricon Singles Chart, [14] while the 12cm version peaked at number twenty. [15] It was used as the Elle Seine commercial song. [16] The Oricon Singles Chart began counting 8cm and 12cm versions together in May 2001, and if the 8cm and 12cm versions were combined, it would have reached a peak of eighth place (4 weeks in a row) after entering the top ten in its tenth week since its release.
"Hi no Ataru Basho" was released as Misia's second single on May 21, 1998, as an 8cm CD single, [17] and a 12-inch vinyl. [18] It was used as an insert song for the film Hood and as Nippon TV's Dotch Cooking Show ending theme, while its B-side, "Koisuru Kisetsu" was used as the Elle Seine commercial song and the opening theme for TV Tokyo's Breakbeats. [19] The single peaked at number nine on the weekly Oricon chart in its fifth week on the chart. [20]
Misia promoted the album with a series of live performances and appearances throughout Japan. On March 3, 1998, her live debut was held at Harlem, a very popular nightclub at the time in Maruyamachō, Shibuya, in front of an audience of 1,200. [21] From September to November 1998, Misia embarked on the Mother Father Brother Sister Tour ’98, performing at nearly thirty clubs and concert halls. [22] Misia performed at school festivals at six universities from October to November 1998, with the first outdoor live show at Kwansei Gakuin University's special outdoor stage attracting ten thousand spectators. [23] On December 2, 1998, nine months after her debut, Misia performed at the Nippon Budokan. [24]

Mother Father Brother Sister received positive reviews from music critics. The album received a glowing retrospective review from Discovolante for the American online publication Sputnikmusic . The reviewer claimed it to be one of the most impressive debut albums from a Japanese artist and that there were few flaws to be found. [25] A staff member from CDJournal stated that Misia possessed "outstanding vocal ability" and stated that her appeal as a vocalist is probably the most important thing. [26] A staff member from HMV stated that Misia's subtle emotional expression and sense of rhythm are exquisite, and her character is cute and there is nothing to complain about with the record. [27] The album won the Best Album Award at the 40th Japan Record Awards at the end of the same year, becoming one of the winning albums in the category alongside Time to Destination by Every Little Thing and Pure Soul by Glay. [28]
Mother Father Brother Sister debuted at number three on the weekly Oricon Albums Chart with 330,660 copies sold. [29] The album stayed in the top three the next two weeks, [30] [31] and on its fourth week reached the top of the charts with 277,990 copies sold. [32] The album remained in the top five for eleven consecutive weeks and in the top 300 for 77 weeks in total, [33] selling over 2.58 million copies in Japan alone. [34] As it sold 2,246,400 copies in 1998, it was the eighth best-selling album of that year. [35] It shifted another 284,010 copies in 1999, becoming the 82nd best-selling album of that year. [36] The success of Mother Father Brother Sister is credited for helping spread R&B through the Japanese mainstream, which therefore paved the way for future prolific female R&B singers such as Hikaru Utada and Sugar Soul. [37] As well as being Misia's highest-selling album, Mother Father Brother Sister is also the seventh best-selling debut album and 38th best-selling album of all time in Japan. [38]

First Love is the debut Japanese-language studio album by Japanese-American recording artist Hikaru Utada, released on March 10, 1999, by Toshiba-EMI.
Misaki Itō commonly known as Misia and stylized in all caps, is a Japanese singer and songwriter. Born in Tsushima, Nagasaki, Misia moved to Fukuoka at the age of 14 to pursue a recording career. There, she continued her secondary education and briefly attended Seinan Gakuin University before withdrawing to focus on her musical career. She was signed to BMG Japan in 1997, after auditioning for record producer Haruo Yoda.
The discography of Japanese R&B singer Misia consists of nine studio albums, three compilation albums, one extended play (EP), one live album, six remix albums, twenty-six singles, twelve promotional singles, eighteen video albums and thirty-seven music videos. In 1997, Misia signed a recording contract with BMG Japan and joined the then up-and-coming talent agency, Rhythmedia. Under the sub-label Arista Japan, Misia released her first single, "Tsutsumikomu Yō ni..." in February 1998, followed by "Hi no Ataru Basho" in May. In June, her debut album, Mother Father Brother Sister, opened at number three on the Oricon chart. The album peaked at number one three weeks later and stayed in the top five for eleven consecutive weeks. Mother Father Brother Sister was certified double million and won a Japan Record Award for Best Album, as well as a Japan Gold Disc Award for Pop Album of the Year. In 2000, Misia's second studio album, Love Is the Message, debuted at number one and was certified double million. It won a Japan Record Award for Best Album and a Japan Gold Disc Award for Pop Album of the Year. The album spawned three top ten hits: "Believe," "Wasurenai Hibi" and "Sweetness." Misia's first remix album, Misia Remix 2000 Little Tokyo, was released three months later and shot to number one. It sold over 800,000 copies and is the second best-selling remix album of all time in Japan.
"Tsutsumikomu Yō ni..." is the debut single of Japanese R&B singer Misia, released on February 21, 1998. It sold 3,030 (8 cm) and 2,350 (12 cm) copies in its first week but became a long seller and after 16 weeks, it peaked at #11 and #20 respectively.
Takayoshi Murota, better known by his stage name MURO, is a Japanese hip hop recording artist, DJ, record producer and designer. In 1987 DJ Krush, Microphone Pager, TWIGY and others formed the "KRUSH POSSE", a crew of rappers and DJs. During this time he excelled at DJing hip-hop and began producing hip-hop beats. His solo debut appeared 1993. In the late 1990s he worked extensively with Nitro Microphone Underground, one of Japan's most successful hip-hop crews. In addition to producing he also was active as a designer.
Yureru Omoi is the fourth album by Zard and was released on July 10, 1993 under B-Gram Records. This is the first original album released in about 10 months since the last album Hold Me. It is also the first album by Izumi Sakai as a solo unit since her first album Good-bye My Loneliness. The release was postponed several times, but was finally released on July 10. In addition, the order form at CD stores indicated that the album title was "Kimi ga Inai" and that it would be released simultaneously with the single "Yureru Omoi" on May 19.
Best Fiction is the third greatest hits album by Japanese singer Namie Amuro. It was released on July 30, 2008, by Avex Trax and features seventeen singles released between 2002-2008, which included five new songs, three of which were released as a triple A-side single called "60s 70s 80s." Furthermore, the album tracks "Do Me More" and "Sexy Girl" were released as digital singles.
Just Ballade is the ninth studio album by Japanese singer Misia. It was released on December 16, 2009 by Ariola Japan, marking Misia's first album release under the label. The album yielded seven singles, "Yes Forever" and "Yakusoku no Tsubasa", released in 2008, the digital exclusive "Sukoshi Zutsu Taisetsu ni", the double A-side single "Ginga" / "Itsumademo", "Aitakute Ima", and lastly "Hoshi no Yō ni...", released on the same day as the album. The tour was announced on August 3, 2006, two days prior to the start of Misia's Hoshizora no Live III Music Is a Joy Forever summer tour. The Tour of Misia 2007 Ascension commenced in November 2006 and concluded three days after the release of Ascension, in February 2007. Initially scheduled to run for eighteen shows, an additional date was later added to the itinerary. Sponsored by OCN, the tour drew an estimated audience of 160,000.

Misia first performed "Boku wa Pegasus Kimi wa Polaris" on January 18, 2014 at Nippon Budokan during the Hoshizora no Live VII concert tour.
Love Bebop is the twelfth studio album by Japanese singer Misia. It was released on January 6, 2016, through Ariola Japan. The title, which is synonymous with love freestyle, was inspired by the evolving LGBT movement in Japan, leading Misia to draw a parallel between the growing societal recognition for all forms of love and the various messages of love depicted on the album. On the album's eponymous title track, Misia quotes former American president Barack Obama, who declared "love is love" in a speech given in the aftermath of the Supreme Court of the United States's landmark decision to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide. The album yielded five singles, "Shiroi Kisetsu" / "Sakura Hitohira", "Orphans no Namida" and the digital exclusive double A-side single "Nagareboshi" / "Anata ni Smile :)".
Misia Soul Jazz Session is the second extended play by Japanese singer Misia. It was released on July 26, 2017, through Ariola Japan. The album was entirely produced and arranged by Takuya Kuroda. It features reworked versions of her previous material with a soul-jazz arrangement, as well as two new songs and a cover of Kai Band's "Saigo no Yogisha", from the album Kono Yoru ni Sayonara (1977).
Misia Hoshizora no Live Song Book: History of Hoshizora Live is the second live album by Japanese singer Misia. It compiles live material, spread out over two discs, collected from the Hoshizora Live concert series, recorded from its first installment in 2001 to the most recent in 2015, in commemoration of the series' 15th anniversary. The double album was released on March 9, 2016, through Ariola Japan.
The Super Tour of Misia: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is a concert tour by Japanese singer Misia, held to celebrate her 20th anniversary as a recording artist. Misia Hoshizora no Live IX: Premium Live was a concert tour by Japanese singer Misia and the ninth installment of the Hoshizora Live concert series. Misia Hoshizora no Live VIII: Moon Journey was a concert tour by Japanese singer Misia and the eighth installment of the Hoshizora Live concert series. The tour began on April 11, 2015 at Aichi Prefectural Art Theater in Nagoya, Aichi and concluded on October 20, 2015 at Festival Hall in Osaka, Osaka, comprising 37 shows.
