Myton Swing Bridge is a road bridge over the River Hull, in the city of Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, England. The bridge carries the A63 road through the south of the city connecting the west and east regions of Hull. Designed by the firm of Freeman Fox and Partners, with engineering undertaken by Cleveland Bridge, it was the largest swing bridge in Britain when it was opened in 1980. The bridge was expected to carry 30,000 vehicles a week, but by 2004, it was carrying 40,000 vehicles a day.
The bridge, which was opened to traffic in December 1980 is an asymmetric cable-stayed box girder swing bridge, located 350 metres (1,150 ft) north of the mouth of the River Hull into the Humber Estuary, Kingston upon Hull. [3] [4] The bridge was tendered at £5.5 million in 1977, but its eventual cost was £8 million (equivalent to £32,622,000in 2021) when it was opened to traffic as part of the A63 Garrison Road in 1981. [5] [6] The A63 road connects Hull with the M62 in the west, and the bridge enabled the docks areas of Hull to connect into the dual carriageway network avoiding the city centre. [7] The road the bridge carries was renamed in 2018 to the Roger Millward Way, after a local sporting hero. [8] [9] Initially it was maintained by Humberside County Council, but after its abolition in March 1993, the bridge has been looked after by Hull City Council. [10] [11] [1] Upon approval of the bridge as part of the south orbital road, it was known as south bridge, with the A165 road having North Bridge as its name. However, since the bridges were not adjacent, to avoid confusion to motorists, it was named Myton Bridge after the historic Myton area of the city that it was in. [12]
The bridge, which was designed by Bernard Wex of Freeman Fox and Partners, stretches for 83 metres (272 ft) across the river, and swing section weighs 800 tonnes (880 tons). [13] [14] Over 900 tonnes (990 tons) of steel and more than 630 tonnes (690 tons) of concrete were used in the building of the entire structure which includes piers both in and out of the water, and a resting pier for when the bridge is swung open. [4] Engineering of the structure was undertaken by Cleveland Bridge. [15] A tower with a control cabin, also built of steel, is placed in the centre median of the roadway which traverses the bridge. [16] Initially the bridge was built with three lanes in either direction, and a pedestrian walkway on the outer edges. Currently the bridge only has two lanes in either direction, with the outermost lane on each side being a hatched area for emergency situations. [1] [15] The swing section measures 32 metres (105 ft) wide, by 83 metres (272 ft) long. [10] The bridge is actually two distinct spans of 55 metres (180 ft) on the eastern side of the control tower, and 28 metres (92 ft) west of the tower. Due to this, much of the extra concrete and steel was used on the back of the shorter span to balance out the weight and provide ballast for the swing operation as a kentledge. [17] [18]
In addition to the measures for the bridge, additional works were undertaken in the river, providing piling along the approaches to the bridge not only to prevent damage to ships, but also to prevent shipping hitting the two concrete piers which supported the bridge in the water. [19] The design was envisaged with vessels to a maximum gross weight of 1,500 tonnes (1,700 tons) and no more than 60 metres (200 ft) in length. [10] It also required a headroom of 30 metres (98 ft). Due to these constraints and associated additional city centre infrastructure, it was decided that a swing span would be better than a lifting bridge. [20] A high level bridge was also ruled out due to a road junction within 200 metres (660 ft) of the bridge, and also aesthetic concerns as the bridge was in the old town area of Hull. [7]
Upon opening to traffic in 1980, it was known as the widest and longest swing bridge in Britain. [21] The bridge was swung open at least two times per day (on average 60 times per month). These timings were normally associated with high tide as most vessels were unable to pass underneath the bridge. [7] The mechanism to swing the bridge open takes 150 seconds, creating a clear passage of 98 feet (30 m) for river vessels. Closure takes 30 seconds less than opening. [21] Initial estimates were of 30,000 vehicles using the bridge every week. [22] By 2004, it was carrying about 40,000 vehicles a day, and was required to open to river traffic on average ten times per month. [14] By 2010, it was opening 200–300 times per year (around 16–25 times per month). Hull City Council encouraged businesses to move away from the River Hull, and as a result, since 2011, openings of the bridge have averaged 20–30 times a month, and are coordinated to be when the traffic flow is at a minimum. [23] Access underneath the approach ramps to each bridge provides routes for vehicles and pedestrians; on the west side this is High Street, on the east side, the road provides access to The Deep. [24]
A year after opening, the bridge was given an award in the 1981 Structural Steel Design Awards for its "imaginative Design". [25] Throughout the 1980s, the bridge was known to break down, causing tailbacks on either side of the bridge. New motors, pumps and a drive system were installed in 1990 at a cost of £700,000 (equivalent to £1,693,000in 2021). [26] The bridge was extensively renovated in the summer of 2023. This involved whole weekend closures with diversions around the city. [27] Whilst these renovations were underway, the repair team needed seven days notice for any vessels which required the bridge to be swung open as this would involve moving plant machinery and enabling the balance to be correct. The Humber Bridge, near Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England, is a 2.22 km single-span road suspension bridge, which opened to traffic on 24 June 1981. When it opened, the bridge was the longest of its type in the world; it was not surpassed until 1998, with the completion of the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge, and is now the twelfth-longest.

When it opened on 29 March 1965, the Tasman was the longest prestressed concrete bridge in Australia, with a total length measuring 1,396 metres (4,580 ft), including approaches. The bridge provides a vital link between Hobart's city centre on the western shore and the City of Clarence on the eastern shore. Averaging 73,029 vehicle crossings per day, the bridge is the highest volume road section in Tasmania. It features five lanes of traffic including a central lane equipped for tidal flow operations and separated shared-use walkways on both sides, with ramp upgrades for improved access and cyclists completed in 2010.

The Ouse Bridge is a reinforced concrete plate girder bridge that spans River Ouse between Goole and Howden in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It carries the M62 and is situated between junctions 36 and 37. It was built between 1973 and 1976 by Costain and was designed by Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick & Partners. The bridge was officially opened to traffic on 24 May 1976 by nine-year-old Martin Brigham.
The Pyrmont Bridge, a heritage-listed swing bridge across Cockle Bay, is located in Darling Harbour, part of Port Jackson, west of the central business district in the City of Sydney local government area of New South Wales, Australia. Opened in 1902, the bridge initially carried motor vehicle traffic via the Pyrmont Bridge Road between the central business district and Pyrmont. Since 1981 the bridge has carried pedestrian and bicycle traffic only, as motor vehicles were diverted to adjacent freeway overpasses. The bridge was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 28 June 2002, the centenary of its opening.

Lagoon Hull is a proposed £1.5 billion development on the Humber Estuary foreshore between Hessle and Kingston upon Hull, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The proposed lagoon would be formed from a stone causeway and will provide an outer lock gate in the Humber Estuary which would effectively dam the River Hull, making it a non-tidal waterway. The 11-kilometre (6.8 mi) long causeway would also provide a dual carriageway from the A63 at Hessle which would run to Hull Docks, taking traffic away from the city centre. The scheme is being vaunted as one that will prevent future flooding in Hull when sea levels rise, and contribute to less flooding in the wider Humber Estuary.

When operating at capability, the plant aims to produce 5% of world demand for neodymium and praseodymium oxide. Work on the site started in 2021, with full opening by 2023. The facility will be the first of its kind in Europe.
The River Ouse swing bridge is a road bridge over the River Ouse in North Yorkshire, England. It was opened in 2004 when the A63 road bypassed the town of Selby, which traffic previously had to go through to cross the river. It is one of several bridges over the River Ouse between York and the mouth of the Ouse, where it joins the River Trent.
Whitefriargate is a pedestrianised street in the Old Town area of Kingston upon Hull, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. During the 20th century, it was one of the main shopping streets in the city centre, but some of the major stores have closed down, which has been attributed to out of town shopping centres. However, the Street still provides a useful link to and from the old town of Hull.
Selby Toll Bridge is one of three swing bridges in the town of Selby, North Yorkshire, England. A timber bridge over the River Ouse in the town was opened in c. 1793 to replace a ferry crossing that had existed since Medieval times. The bridge provided a connection between the West and East Ridings of Yorkshire across the River Ouse, and became the furthest downstream public bridge crossing over the river until 1929, when the Boothferry Bridge was built. The moving section of the original bridge used ball-bearings and cog wheels; the bridge is believed to be the first in the world to use ball-bearings. The replacement 1970s bridge, now only carries the A19 road as the A63 bypass was opened in 2004.
Lambwath Stream, is a small beck in the Holderness area of the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The stream is unusual in that despite rising only metres away from the coast, it runs inland (westwards) for nearly 19 kilometres (12 mi) into the Holderness Drain. The watercourse was heavily modified during Medieval times to act as a drain.
