The National Commission for Homoeopathy (formerly known as Central Council of Homoeopathy) is a statutory body under the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India. Central Council of Homoeopathy was set up by the Government of India in 1973. The National Commission for Homoeopathy was constituted on 5 July 2021 and on the same date, the Homoeopathy Central Council Act, 1973 was repealed and the Central Council of Homoeopathy was superseded. It is one of the Professional Councils of University Grants Commission (UGC), formed to monitor higher education in India. [2] Any institution desiring to grant a qualification in homeopathy is required to apply to the Council, which prescribes course curriculum and maintains central registers of homeopaths. [3]

History

The institution set up under the Central Council of Homeopathy Act 1973, (Act 59). Any university or similar institution in India offering either a degree or a diploma in homeopathy can do so only if it is approved by CCH, apart from being listed under the schedules of the above-mentioned act. [4] The CCH also defines particular course curriculum and notifies benchmarks that need to be maintained by homeopathy teaching institutions, apart from maintaining a central registry of all homeopathy physicians in India. [3]

In 2007, the Union Health Ministry set up the 'National Council for Clinical Establishments' for "determine minimum standards" for clinical establishments. A CCH representative is also a formal member of this National Council. [5]

In October 2016, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested the CCH's chief, Ramjee Singh and another man in relation to the alleged collection of money to provide a favorable report that would allow regulatory approval. [6]

Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery

The council regulates the Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (B.H.M.S.). It is a graduate degree awarded after five and a half years' study, including one-year internship. [7]

MD (Homeopathy) in India

There is also a post-graduate degree awarded after three years' study upon completion of which an MD (Homeopathy) post-graduate degree is awarded.

The Homoeopathy Central Council Act, 1973,, is a now-repealed Act of the Parliament of India to primarily structure the role of the Central Council of Homoeopathy and to enable the regularization of the maintenance of a central register of issues and entities related to the field of homoeopathy. It included five chapters when it was initially passed. The Act was amended in December 2002, via Homoeopathy Central Council Amendment Act, 2002. The Act was replaced by the National Commission for Homoeopathy Act, 2020 with effect from 7 October 2020.

Mahesh Bhattacharya Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital is a homeopathic medical college and hospital in Howrah, West Bengal, India. It was established in 1967 and is one of the oldest homeopathic medical colleges in India. The college is affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences and recognized by the Central Council of Homoeopathy (CCH), Ministry of Ayush. It offers B.H.M.S. and M.D. (Homoeopathy) courses.

D.N. De Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital is a government homoeopathic medical college and hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. It was established in 1927 and one of the oldest homeopathic medical colleges in India. The college is affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences. It is also recognized by the Central Council of Homoeopathy (CCH). It offers B.H.M.S. and M.D. (Homoeopathy) courses. This college was established as Dunham College of Homoeopathy in 1927, and later renamed as D.N. De Homoeopathic Medical College in the name of its founder Dr. D. N. De. in the January’ 1951.

Purulia Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital is a private homoeopathic medical college in Purulia, West Bengal, India. It was established in 1983. It offers the Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS) degree course. This institution is recognized by the Central Council of Homoeopathy (CCH), Ministry of Ayush and affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences.

Dr. B. D. Jatti Homoeopathic Medical College, Hospital and Post Graduate Research Centre is an organization under the Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy, Government of India. It is affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bengaluru, Karnataka and conducts the graduate degree course in Homeopathy and post-graduate degree courses in Homoeopathy. The college is attached with 60 bedded hospital.

The standard entry-to-practice degree in modern evidence-based medicine in India is the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). Alternative systems of Medicine in India are Ayurveda (BAMS), Unani (BUMS), Siddha(BSMS), Homeopathy (BHMS). M.B.B.S. a credential earned upon completion of a five-and-a-half-year undergraduate program. The curriculum is divided into one year of preclinical studies in general science subjects and three and a half years of paraclinical and clinical studies, followed by a one-year clinical internship. Before beginning the internship, students are required to pass several examinations, the final one of which is conducted in two parts. Postgraduate education in medical specialties typically takes 3 additional years of study after the MBBS and concludes with the award of a Master of Surgery or Doctor of Medicine(MD). Postgraduate diplomas in medical specialities may also be awarded upon the completion of two-year training programs. After that a person can further get a degree in superspeciality in his or her respective branch after successful completion of 3 years of superspeciality in a medical college.
