New York's 37th State Assembly district is one of the 150 districts in the New York State Assembly. It has been represented by Claire Valdez since 2025, defeating then-incumbent Juan Ardila. [1]

Geography

District 37 is located in Queens.

2020s

It contains the neighborhoods of Sunnyside, Sunnyside Gardens, and portions of Ridgewood, Long Island City and Maspeth.

The district overlaps (partially) with New York's 6th and 7th congressional districts, the 12th, 18th and 59th districts of the New York State Senate, and the 26th, 30th and 34th districts of the New York City Council.

2010s

It contains the neighborhoods of Sunnyside, Ridgewood, portions of Astoria, Woodside, Long Island City, Maspeth, Queensbridge, Ravenswood, Dutch Kills and Blissville.

The redrawn District 12 includes the Upper West Side constituency represented by Nadler since the 1990s, the Upper East Side, and all of Midtown Manhattan. The district is the smallest congressional district by area in the U.S. The 12th district's per capita income, in excess of $75,000, is the highest among all congressional districts in the United States.

The 2024 New York State Assembly election was held on November 5, 2024. This election coincided with elections for U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. presidential election, and state senate, among others. Districts for this election were redrawn pursuant to court order in Nichols v. Hochul, though the lines passed by the Independent Redistricting Commission and the state legislature on April 28, 2023, were nearly identical to the 2022 districts. Democrats have held a majority in the New York State Assembly since 1975.

Claire Valdez is an American politician from New York City. She is serving in the New York State Assembly representing the 37th District since 2025. A Democrat, she represents part of Queens.
