The October 2008 Central America floods were caused by a series of low-pressure areas including Tropical Depression Sixteen, a short-lived tropical cyclone in the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season that made landfall in Honduras. Heavy rainfall began in early October 2008 while a tropical wave passed through the region. On October 14, Tropical Depression Sixteen formed just off the northeast coast of Honduras, and at the same time a low-pressure system was on the Pacific coast. Both systems increased rainfall across the region, although the depression dropped heavy rainfall close to its center when it moved ashore on October 15. Although Tropical Depression Sixteen quickly dissipated over land, its remnants persisted for several days. Another low-pressure area interacted with a cold front on October 21, adding to the rainfall in the region.

Heavy rainfall extended from Costa Rica to southeastern Mexico, causing what was considered the worst natural disaster in the region since Hurricane Mitch in 1998. In the former country, rainfall totaled 2,100 millimetres (83 in) over several weeks, making the week ending October 17 the wettest in San José since 1944. Floods in Costa Rica damaged 32 bridges and roads in 174 locations, while 1,396 homes were damaged, killing seven people. In Nicaragua to the north, weeks of heavy rainfall killed 16 people and damaged or destroyed 1,333 houses. In Honduras where the tropical depression made landfall, rainfall reached 1.2 metres (3.9 ft) in some areas, although the highest official total there related to the depression was 360 millimetres (14 in) on the offshore Roatán over six days. About 40% of municipalities in the country experienced flooding, forcing over 50,000 people to leave their homes. The floods damaged about 50% of roads in Honduras, and over 10,000 houses were damaged or destroyed. Damage totaled about 3 billion lempiras (HNL, $225 million USD), [nb 1] and there were 60 deaths.

In northern Guatemala, the floods damaged about 67,000 ha (170,000 acres) of crop fields, accounting for Q128.9 million (2008  GTQ, US$16.8 million) in crop damage. There were 17 deaths and about 4,000 damaged houses in Guatemala. In neighboring El Salvador, the rains contributed to October 2008 being the third-wettest month across the country, after Hurricane Stan in 2005 and Hurricane Mitch in 1998. One person died, and hundreds were forced to evacuate their houses. In Belize, the rains flooded about 1,000 homes, forcing the evacuation of one entire town for health reasons. The rains caused additional flooding following Tropical Storm Arthur striking the country in May, damaging a bridge that was rebuilt after Arthur. Nationwide, the floods caused BZ$54.1 million (BZD, US$27.1 million) in damage and two deaths.

Widespread rainfall occurred throughout Central America in early October 2008 due to the passage of a tropical wave through the region. [1] Later, another tropical wave approached the region, which was believed to have left the west coast of Africa on September 17. The wave developed a low-pressure area on October 10 in the southwestern Caribbean, with sporadic convection. [2] On October 13, the system consisted of a large area of convection drifting northward offshore eastern Central America, [3] and Dvorak classifications began, indicating gradual organization. [2] At that time, there was another low-pressure area on the Pacific coast, and both systems were producing rainfall across Central America. [4]

At 1200  UTC on October 14, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) indicated that Tropical Depression Sixteen developed about 85 kilometres (53 mi) northeast of Cabo Gracias a Dios, a point where the border of Nicaragua and Honduras meet the Caribbean. [2] In the hours after the depression's formation, the convection decreased, and hurricane hunters indicated that the small low-level circulation was rotating around a broader circulation. Shortly after 1200 UTC on October 15, the weak tropical depression made landfall just west of Punta Patuca in northern Honduras, [2] with a broad and ill-defined circulation. [5] Continuing west-southwestward over land, the circulation dissipated on October 16 over the mountains of central Honduras, although the depression's remnants continued to produce rainfall across the region for several days. [2] On October 21, a cold front was moving through the Yucatán Peninsula, interacting with a newly formed low in the Gulf of Honduras to produce additional rainfall. [6] [7]


Preparations

Around the time when the NHC began issuing advisories on the depression, officials issued a tropical storm warning for northern Honduras that eventually covered the country's entire coastline. A tropical storm warning was also issued for the coast of Belize. [2] When the NHC began issuing advisories on the depression, the agency anticipated the depression would intensify into a strong tropical storm, based on low wind shear and warm sea surface temperatures; however, the agency noted uncertainty in the track. A ridge to the north was expected to steer the nascent depression westward, and two tropical cyclone forecast models predicted the storm would continue west-northwestward to strike Belize. Other models forecast a more immediate landfall, which would limit intensification. [8] While the storm was active, officials in Honduras issued a yellow alert for seven departments where heavy rainfall had occurred. [9] A nationwide yellow alert was also issued for El Salvador, meaning there was potential for flooding and landslides, [10] although alerts were dropped on October 21 when the threat of rainfall diminished. [11]

Impact

Although a weak tropical cyclone, the depression and its remnants dropped heavy rainfall across Central America for several days, spreading into Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, and Belize. In Honduras where it made landfall, rainfall peaked at 360 millimetres (14 in) on the offshore Roatán over six days. [2] A member from Mercy Corps estimated the rainfall in October to have totaled around 1.2 metres (3.9 ft) in some areas. [12] On the mainland, rainfall reached 266 millimetres (10.5 in) at El Empalme. [2] In El Salvador, the depression dropped heavy rainfall, mainly in the southern coastal portion, with a 24-hour peak of 239 millimetres (9.4 in) in Puerto Parada en La Unión. [13] Over a period of eight days, rainfall in Belize reached 547 millimetres (21.5 in) at Baldy Beacon. [2] Rainfall extended as far north as southeastern Mexico. [14] Throughout the region, the flooding destroyed about 10,000 homes and left about 250,000 people homeless. News agencies considered the flooding the worst in the region since Hurricane Mitch in 1998. [15]

According to Costa Rica's National Meteorology Institute, the week ending on October 17 was the wettest in San José since 1944. [16] Over a period of several weeks, rainfall reached about 2,100 millimetres (83 in). [14] The influence between the precursor to the depression and a low-pressure area in the eastern Pacific caused flooding in Costa Rica that killed seven people. [2] [17] In Guanacaste Province, a landslide covered three cars, and in Monteverde, another landslide knocked over a power line that killed two people. [18] In Parrita, an ambulance carrying four people was struck by a fallen tree, while in Puntarenas, another vehicle was struck by a tree, killing one of its occupants. [19] Transport was disrupted in widespread areas in the north and south of the country due to landslides blocking roads. [14] Across the country, the floods compromised roads in 174 locations and damaged 32 bridges. [20] Flooding isolated about 6,900 people in 75 communities, [21] and about 77,000 people were forced to leave their homes. [22] Power outages affected 89 communities, [23] and 424 water wells along the Pacific coast were polluted. Nationwide, the floods damaged 1,396 houses and 39 schools. [20]

In early October, heavy rainfall began affecting Nicaragua, causing mudslides and flooding. [24] The tropical depression added to weeks of heavy rainfall that killed 16 people, [25] many caused by people attempting to cross swollen rivers. [26] Toward the end of October 2008, Lake Managua overflowed, causing flooding in the capital city of Managua. [27] Across the country, 2,273 people evacuated to storm shelters after the floods damaged or destroyed 1,333 houses. [28] Transportation was disrupted when the floods wrecked four bridges and 154 miles (248 km) of highways. [25] Classes were canceled in León and Chinandega departments. [16] The crops in the latter department were almost entirely destroyed. [29]

Following months of drought conditions, the heavy rainfall in Honduras caused flooding, initially in the southern and central portions, [30] although the entire country experienced rainfall, [23] with 40% of municipalities experiencing flooding. [31] The rains caused widespread landslides, particularly in the western and central portions. [23] In the capital city Tegucigalpa, the rainfall in October was estimated to have been twice the average annual total. [32] In two locations, the Pan-American Highway was disrupted by either landslide or flooding, [33] and widespread areas were isolated nationwide by flooded roads. [34] According to Reuters, about 50% of the roads in Honduras were damaged during the floods, [31] with 227 roads and 106 bridges damaged. [35] A landslide near Corquín blocked a river and created a natural dam, forcing hundreds of nearby residents to leave. [36] In Colón Department, the Tocoa River overflowed, while flooding in Atlántida damaged crop lands. [37] A total of 101,107 ha (249,840 acres) of crops were damaged, [38] mostly in Comayagua Department. 14 water systems were damaged, [23] and 150,000 people lost power in Olancho Department. [38] Landslides in Tegucigalpa killed six and displaced about 500 people. [39] In El Progreso, 375 inmates from a jail had to be evacuated to another facility. [40] A total of 50,676 people were forced to evacuate in the country, most of whom stayed in shelters. [41] 2,474 homes were destroyed in Honduras, with another 8,688 damaged or flooded. [41] In addition, at least nine schools were damaged or destroyed. [42] Nationwide, the floods killed 60 people, [43] and damage was estimated at about 3 billion lempiras (HNL, US$225 million). [41] The low death toll compared to Hurricane Mitch was largely due to the widespread evacuations. [44]

Floods in Guatemala overflowed rivers and caused landslides in Izabal and Petén departments, blocking many roads. [45] The rising rivers damaged about 175 houses, forcing hundreds of people to leave their homes. [46] About 67,000 ha (170,000 acres) of crop fields were damaged or destroyed, including corn, rice, and beans, [43] and crop damage nationwide was estimated at Q128.9 million (2008  GTQ, US$16.8 million). About 2.5% of the national corn crop and 3.7% of the rice crop were wrecked during the floods. [47] Nationwide, about 4,000 houses and 82 roads were damaged or destroyed, [23] and 17 people died in the country from the floods. [43] In neighboring El Salvador, floods affected the houses of about 600 families. [10] High levels forced officials to release water from several dams, causing urban flooding. Along the coastline, the floods damaged maize and bean crops. [23] The average rainfall across El Salvador for the month of October was 475 millimetres (18.7 in). This was the third-highest for October since such record keeping began in 1971, after 2005 when Hurricane Stan struck and 1998 when Hurricane Mitch crossed the area. [48] The tropical depression killed one person in the country. [2]

In Belize, the rainfall in one week represented the average monthly values at some stations. [6] Heavy rainfall from the depression caused levels to rise along rivers and creeks. A bridge that had been rebuilt following earlier Tropical Storm Arthur was flooded, prompting the Belize Defence Force to assist in crossings. [49] This isolated much of Cayo District from the rest of the country until the bridge was repaired. On the western portion of the district, flooding along the Macal River damaged a bridge crossing into northern Guatemala, which restricted traffic only to people returning home. [50] Levels along the Macal and the Belize River were higher than the floods of Hurricane Mitch in 1998, but less than that of Hurricane Keith in 2000. [6] The floods caused residents to evacuate after over 1,000 homes were flooded; [51] 311 people stayed in shelters, while the remainder stayed with families and relatives. [52] Of the affected houses, 12 were destroyed and 802 were severely damaged. [6] Most of the affected population was in rural areas of western Belize. [6] One village in Orange Walk District had to be quarantined due to the health threat from the floods for 25 days. [53] Many roads were closed, [52] and there were widespread school closures. [50] Overall, the floods killed two people in the country and caused BZ$54.1 million (BZD, US$27.1 million) in damage. Most of the damage was agricultural, accounting for BZ$28.2 million (BZD, US$14.1 million), or 25% of the country's agricultural gross domestic product. Other damage included BZ$11.7 million (BZD, US$6.3 million) to roads and bridges. The ongoing floods caused BZ$2.7 million (BZD, US$1.5 million) in tourism losses, due to closed facilities and water damage. [6]

Aftermath

Following the floods in Costa Rica, the country's Red Cross opened shelters to house storm victims. [18] The government advised residents not to drink water out of fear it could be polluted from the flooding. [54] A state of emergency was declared on October 18 due to the effects in Costa Rica. [14] In Nicaragua, officials deployed about 3,000 soldiers to assist in flood operations. [26] The World Food Programme provided about 8 tons of food to families in El Salvador affected by the flooding. [10] Then-president of Honduras Manuel Zelaya declared a national state of emergency on October 19. [37] In Honduras, pre-positioned supplies from UNICEF quickly diminished due to the widespread distribution of blankets and medical kits, raising fears for the spread of disease. [55] The World Food Programme provided about 58 tons of food to 5,500 families in Honduras. [56] Residents returned home as floodwaters gradually receded. [32] The Mercy Corps later provided corn and bean seeds to 1,300 Honduran farmers to regrow the damaged crops. [57] In May 2009, the World Bank provided $25 million (USD) to Honduras to rebuild damaged roads and bridges. [58] Workers in Guatemala airlifted food to storm victims due to residual flooding. [59] The Guatemalan government provided $6.6 million to residents in the northern portion of the country, including medical supplies and seeds to regrow crops. [60] A state of emergency was declared for Cayo District in Belize. [61] Search and rescue teams were deployed to the district, and medical crews visited several towns, [62] providing help to 3,000 people. The Belize National Emergency Management Organization provided meals to about 9,000 people following the floods. [51]

Across the affected areas, the Red Cross spent about $247,000 to provide food and blankets. [63] In the weeks and months following the flooding, various international groups provided aid totaling nearly $11 million. The United States donated $622,732 worth of assistance, mainly to help with logistical work and relief efforts. [64] The United States military also worked to purify drinking water in Honduras. [65] Canada donated $412,201 worth of assistance, including providing shelter in Honduras and rebuilding schools. The country of Brazil donated about $1.68 million worth of food. The Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department of the European Commission provided nearly $2.2 million for relief efforts. Other European country donations included nearly $500,000 from Ireland for hygiene and food supplies, $675,675 from the Netherlands for general relief efforts, $154,570 from Spain through the World Food Programme, $159,559 from Germany for shelters, and $892,468 from Sweden. Several Asian countries donated to the relief efforts, including $123,810 from Japan to Honduras to purchase emergency goods, $22,000 from South Korea, and $10,000 from Singapore to Honduras. Non-governmental organizations and other groups providing aid included $1.5 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund, $300,000 from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, $120,000 from Catholic Relief Services, and $289,000 from ACT Alliance. [64]

In November, weeks after the tropical depression struck Honduras, Tropical Storm Paloma formed in the western Caribbean and caused additional rainfall in the region. [66]

Hurricane Michelle was the fifth costliest tropical cyclone in Cuban history and the strongest hurricane of the 2001 Atlantic hurricane season. The thirteenth named storm and seventh hurricane that year, Michelle developed from a tropical wave that had traversed into the western Caribbean Sea on October 29; the wave had initially moved off the coast of Africa 13 days prior. In its early developmental stages, the depression meandered over Nicaragua, later paralleling the Mosquito Coast before intensifying into tropical storm intensity on November 1; Michelle was upgraded to hurricane strength the following day. Shortly after, rapid intensification ensued within favorable conditions, with the storm's central barometric pressure dropping 51 mbar in 29 hours. After a slight fluctuation in strength, Michelle reached its peak intensity as a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 140 mph (230 km/h) and a minimum pressure of 933 mbar. This tied Michelle with 1999's Lenny as the fourth most powerful November hurricane on record in the Atlantic Basin, behind only the 1932 Cuba hurricane and 2020 Hurricanes Iota and Eta. At roughly the same time, the hurricane began to accelerate northeastward; this brought the intense hurricane to a Cuban landfall within the Bay of Pigs later that day. Crossing over the island, Michelle was weakened significantly, and was only a Category 1 hurricane upon reentry into the Atlantic Ocean. The hurricane later transitioned into an extratropical cyclone over The Bahamas on November 5, before being absorbed by a cold front the following day.

Hurricane Keith was an Atlantic hurricane in October 2000 that caused extensive damage in Central America, especially in Mexico and Belize. It was the fifteenth tropical cyclone, eleventh named storm, and seventh hurricane of the 2000 Atlantic hurricane season. Keith developed as a tropical depression from a tropical wave in the western Caribbean Sea on September 28. The depression gradually strengthened, and became Tropical Storm Keith on the following day. As the storm tracked westward, it continued to intensify and was upgraded to a hurricane on September 30. Shortly thereafter, Keith began to rapidly deepen, and peaked as a Category 4 hurricane less than 24 hours later. Keith then began to meander erratically offshore of Belize, which significantly weakened the storm due to land interaction. By late on October 2, Keith made landfall in Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, Belize as a minimal hurricane. It quickly weakened to a tropical storm, before another landfall occurred near Belize City early on the following day. While moving inland over the Yucatán Peninsula, Keith weakened further, and was downgraded to a tropical depression before emerging into the Gulf of Mexico on October 4. Once in the Gulf of Mexico, Keith began to re-strengthen and was upgraded to a tropical storm later that day, and a hurricane on the following day. By late on October 5, Keith made its third and final landfall near Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico as a moderately strong Category 1 hurricane. Hurricane Iris was a small, but powerful Category 4 hurricane that caused widespread destruction in Belize. Iris was the second-strongest storm of the 2001 Atlantic hurricane season, behind Hurricane Michelle. It was the ninth named storm, fifth hurricane, and third major hurricane of the year, forming from a tropical wave on October 4 just southeast of Barbados. It moved westward through the Caribbean, intensifying into a tropical storm on October 5 south of Puerto Rico, and into a hurricane on the following day. While passing south of the Dominican Republic, Iris dropped heavy rainfall that caused landslides, killing eight people. Later, the hurricane passed south of Jamaica, where it destroyed two houses. On reaching the western Caribbean Sea, Iris rapidly intensified into a Category 4 on the Saffir–Simpson scale. A small hurricane with an eye of only 7 mi (11 km) in diameter, Iris reached peak winds of 145 mph (233 km/h) before making landfall in southern Belize near Monkey River Town on October 9. The hurricane quickly dissipated over Central America, although its remnants contributed to the formation of Tropical Storm Manuel in the eastern Pacific Ocean. The hurricane caused severe damage—destroying homes, flooding streets, and leveling trees—in coastal towns south of Belize City.

Widespread suffering and economic crises were exacerbated by Joan, primarily across Nicaragua, as heavy rains and high winds impacted those near the hurricane's path.

Hurricane Fifi, later known as Hurricane Orlene, was a catastrophic tropical cyclone that killed over 8,000 people in Honduras in September 1974, ranking it as the third deadliest Atlantic hurricane on record, only behind Hurricane Mitch in 1998, and the 1780 hurricane. Fifi is also the first billion-dollar hurricane not to make landfall in the U.S. Originating from a strong tropical wave on September 14, the system steadily tracked west-northwestward through the eastern Caribbean. On September 16, the depression intensified into Tropical Storm Fifi just off the coast of Jamaica. The storm quickly intensified into a hurricane the following afternoon and attained its peak intensity on September 18 as a strong Category 2 hurricane. Maintaining hurricane intensity, Fifi brushed the northern coast of Honduras before making landfall in Belize the following day. The storm quickly weakened after landfall, becoming a depression late on September 20. Continuing westward, the former hurricane began to interact with another system in the eastern Pacific.

Hurricane Francelia was the deadliest hurricane of the 1969 Atlantic hurricane season after causing significant flooding to Central America, especially Belize and Guatemala. The sixth named storm and fourth hurricane of the season, Francelia developed from a tropical wave in the southeastern Caribbean Sea on August 29. It moved west-northwestward and strengthened into a tropical storm on the following day. On September 1, Francelia reached hurricane status, shortly before re-curving west-southwest. While approaching Central America, the storm intensified and peaked as a 100 mph (160 km/h) Category 2 hurricane on September 2. Francelia weakened slightly before making landfall near Punta Gorda, Belize late on September 3. The storm quickly weakened inland and dissipated by the following day.

The seventh named storm and third hurricane of the annual hurricane season, Gert originated as a tropical depression from a tropical wave over the southwestern Caribbean Sea on September 14. The next day, the cyclone briefly attained tropical storm strength before moving ashore in Nicaragua and proceeding through Honduras. It reorganized into a tropical storm over the Gulf of Honduras on September 17, but weakened back to a depression upon crossing the Yucatán Peninsula. Once over the warm waters of the Bay of Campeche, Gert quickly strengthened into a Category 2 hurricane by September 20. The hurricane made a final landfall on the Gulf Coast of Mexico near Tuxpan, Veracruz, with peak winds of 100 mph (160 km/h). The rugged terrain disrupted the cyclone's structure; Gert entered the Pacific Ocean as a depression near the state of Nayarit on September 21, where it briefly redeveloped a few strong thunderstorms before dissipating at sea five days later.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Hurricane Marco (1996)</span> Category 1 Atlantic hurricane in 1996

Hurricane Marco caused significant flooding in the Greater Antilles and Central America, despite remaining well offshore. The thirteenth tropical cyclone, thirteenth named storm, and ninth hurricane of the 1996 Atlantic hurricane season, Marco developed in the western Caribbean Sea on November 16 after the interaction of a cold front and several tropical waves. Initially a tropical depression, it remained weak as it tracked southwestward and eventually southward. By November 19, the depression strengthened into Tropical Storm Marco, shortly before slowly curving in a general eastward direction. Marco briefly became a hurricane on November 20, though upper-level winds caused it to weaken back to a tropical storm later that day. The storm then tracked northeastward toward Hispaniola, but later become nearly stationary and curve eastward, then doubled-back to the west.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tropical Storm Alma</span> Pacific tropical storm in 2008

Tropical Storm Alma was the easternmost forming Pacific tropical cyclone on record. It formed within the monsoon trough just off the coast of Costa Rica on May 29. Initially forecast to remain a weak tropical storm, the cyclone rapidly strengthened and developed an eye, before making landfall on May 29 in Nicaragua, near León, with peak winds of 65 mph (105 km/h). Alma degenerated into a remnant low on May 30, before merging with another approaching tropical wave in the Gulf of Honduras shortly afterward, which became Tropical Storm Arthur on the next day. Alma was the first tropical storm on record to strike the Pacific coast of Nicaragua. In Costa Rica, heavy rainfall caused flooding and landslides, killing two and causing $35 million (USD) in damage. Three people were killed in Nicaragua, one from drowning and two others from electrocution. Five others died in Honduras from an aviation accident likely related to the storm and one other was swept away in floodwaters.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tropical Storm Agatha</span> Pacific tropical storm in 2010

Tropical Storm Agatha was a weak but deadly tropical cyclone that brought widespread floods to much of Central America, and was the deadliest storm in the eastern Pacific tropical cyclone basin since Hurricane Pauline in 1997. The first named storm of the 2010 Pacific hurricane season, Agatha originated from the Intertropical Convergence Zone, a region of thunderstorms across the tropics. It developed into a tropical depression on May 29 and tropical storm later, it was dissipated on May 30, reaching top winds of 45 mph and a lowest pressure of 1000 mbar. It made landfall near the Guatemala–Mexico border on the evening of May 29. Agatha produced torrential rain all across Central America, which resulted in the death of one person in Nicaragua. In Guatemala, 152 people were killed and 100 left missing by landslides. Thirteen deaths also occurred in El Salvador. Agatha soon dissipated over Guatemala. As of June 15, officials in Guatemala have stated that 165 people were killed and 113 others are missing.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tropical Storm Matthew (2010)</span> Atlantic tropical storm in 2010

Tropical Storm Matthew was a weak but deadly and destructive tropical cyclone which made landfall in Central America during the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season. The fifteenth tropical cyclone and thirteenth named storm of the year, Matthew formed on September 23 and lost its tropical characteristics in the morning of September 26. However, its remnants continued to produce life-threatening rain over parts of Central America as it dissipated.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Hurricane Otto</span> Category 3 Atlantic and Pacific hurricane in 2016

Hurricane Otto was a strong late-season tropical cyclone that impacted parts of Central America in November 2016. It was the first Atlantic hurricane since Cesar–Douglas in 1996 to survive the crossover from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. Forming late on November 20 in the southwestern Caribbean Sea, Otto was the fifteenth and final named storm, seventh hurricane and fourth major hurricane of the 2016 Atlantic hurricane season. It quickly intensified into a strong tropical storm the next day, and on November 23–24, rapidly strengthened into a Category 3 hurricane, the first in the month of November since Hurricane Paloma in 2008, and the latest date an Atlantic hurricane attained such intensity on record. Otto made landfall in Nicaragua at peak intensity on November 24, thus becoming the latest hurricane to make landfall in the Atlantic basin since 1851 when records began. Traveling along the Nicaragua–Costa Rica border, the system rapidly weakened to a tropical storm before emerging over the eastern Pacific Ocean, becoming the final storm of the 2016 Pacific hurricane season as well. Hostile environmental conditions inhibited reorganization, and Otto subsequently degenerated into an elongated trough on November 26.

It has a population of around 5 million in a land area of 51,060 square kilometers. Hurricanes are uncommon in the country, as only eighteen have been recorded in history.

Nicaragua, officially the Republic of Nicaragua, is the largest country in the Central American isthmus, bordered by Honduras to the northwest, the Caribbean to the east, Costa Rica to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the southwest. Tropical cyclones are common in the country, with an average of one storm a year. The coast is especially subject to destructive tropical storms and hurricanes, particularly from July through October. The high winds and floods, accompanying these storms often cause considerable destruction of property. Hurricanes or heavy rains in the central highlands where agriculture has destroyed much of the natural vegetation also cause considerable crop damage and soil erosion. One of the deadliest hurricanes to hit Nicaragua has been Hurricane Mitch in 1998, in which the storm killed thousands in the country.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Hurricane Eta</span> Category 4 Atlantic hurricane in 2020

Hurricane Eta was a deadly and erratic tropical cyclone that devastated parts of Central America in early November 2020. The record-tying twenty-eighth named storm, thirteenth hurricane, and sixth major hurricane of the extremely-active 2020 Atlantic hurricane season, Eta originated from a vigorous tropical wave in the eastern Caribbean Sea on October 31. The system rapidly organized as it progressed west, with the cyclone ultimately becoming a Category 4 hurricane on November 3. With a peak intensity of 150 mph (240 km/h) and 922 millibars, it was the third most intense November Atlantic hurricane on record, behind the 1932 Cuba hurricane and Hurricane Iota, the latter of which formed just two weeks later in the same area. Some weakening took place as the system made landfall near Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua, late that same day. Eta rapidly weakened to a tropical depression and briefly degenerated to a remnant low as it meandered across Central America for two days, before regenerating into a tropical depression and moving north over water. The storm later reorganized over the Caribbean as it accelerated toward Cuba on November 7, making a second landfall on the next day. Over the next five days, the system moved erratically, making a third landfall in the Florida Keys, on November 9, before slowing down and making a counterclockwise loop in the southern Gulf of Mexico, just off the coast of Cuba, with the storm's intensity fluctuating along the way. After briefly regaining hurricane strength on November 11, the system weakened back to a tropical storm once more, before making a fourth landfall on Florida on the next day, and proceeding to accelerate northeastward. Eta subsequently became extratropical on November 13, before dissipating off the coast of the Eastern United States on the next day.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Hurricane Julia (2022)</span> Category 1 Atlantic and Pacific hurricane

Hurricane Julia was a deadly tropical cyclone that caused significant impacts in Central America as a Category 1 hurricane in October 2022. The tenth named storm and fifth hurricane of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season, Julia formed from a tropical wave over the southern Caribbean Sea on October 7, just off the coast of South America. Only one storm on record, Tropical Storm Bret in 1993, has tracked further south over South America.
