The Chicago Fire Department is the second largest municipal fire department in the United States and one of the largest in North America. [1] The Chicago Fire Department is organized in a paramilitary fashion, similar to that of most large municipal fire departments.

Personnel Profile and Rank Structure

These are executive and emergency response members of the department, including administrative positions. Some of these members are included in emergency response. The Fire Commissioner (known as Chief of the Department in other cities) is appointed by the Mayor of the city of Chicago and is Confirmed by the City Council. [2] [3] 1st Deputy Fire Commissioner, Deputy Fire Commissioner, Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioner, District Chiefs, Deputy District Chiefs, and Assistant Deputy Chief Paramedics are appointed by the Fire Commissioner. Battalion Chiefs, Captains, Lieutenants, Engineers, Paramedic Field Chiefs, and Ambulance Commanders are by examination.

The Chicago Fire Department is organized into 5 Districts, which command 24 Firefighting Battalions and a Special Operations Battalion. [5] [7] [8] [9] [10]

(*) Denotes an Advanced Life Support/Paramedic Staffed Company. All CFD Engine companies and Truck companies are Basic Life Support/Emergency Medical Technician Staffed units at a minimum. 1st Fire District

The 1st Fire District is commanded by a District Chief (2-1-21). The 1st Fire District has a Deputy District Chief who reports to the District Chief of the District. Firehouse 18 serves as Headquarters for the 1st Fire District and has Engine 18,Ambulance 65,2-2-1 (Deputy District Chief:1st Fire District) and 6-4-16 (High Rise Unit). It is located at 1360 South Blue Island Avenue in the Near West Side Neighborhood.

3rd Fire District / Airport Operations Division

The 3rd Fire District is not under the command of a Deputy District Chief. It is commanded by an Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioner (2-1-12) and is in charge of the Airport Operations Division. An Assistant Deputy Chief Paramedic (4-4-11/Engine 44's Firehouse)is in Charge of EMS Operations at O'Hare and 4-4-12 (Engine 84's Firehouse) is in charge of EMS Operations at Midway Airport. Currently (10/22), there is no Deputy District Chief or District Chief assigned to Airport Operations. O'Hare Rescues 1,2,3,4 and Midway Rescue (Airport Side of Firehouse) are located in the 3rd Fire District/Airport Operations Division.

District 3 has a pool of Spare Apparatus that are kept at the respective AMC's (Airport Maintenance Complex) which are located at each airport. This is the repair shops for all vehicles. The following apparatus are at the ORD facility: Engine 9-S/Engine 10-S/6-5-11/6-5-13/6-5-15/AVF-006 [Spare Battalion]/AVF-106 & AVF-107 [Spare Ambulances]/Spare Squad [used by Squad-7 & 5-1-2 if needed].

Firehouse 38 serves as Headquarters for the 4th Fire District and has Engine 38,Truck 48,Ambulance 77 and 2-2-4 (Deputy District Chief:4th Fire District). It is located at 3949 West 16th Street in the North Lawndale Neighborhood.

Engine 127/Ambulance 54/Battalion 16 are considered "city companies" and all repairs and changing of apparatus are performed at city repair/radio shops.

The services are provided by a combination of paid county personnel and volunteer members of the various independent, non-profit volunteer fire and rescue corporations located throughout the county.

The Louisville Division of Fire, commonly known as the Louisville Fire Department or Louisville Fire & Rescue, is the sole fire suppression agency for the city of Louisville, Kentucky and is one of eight fire departments within the Louisville-Jefferson County, Kentucky metropolitan area. The Louisville Division of Fire responded to 46,782 incidents in 2022. As of 2022 the Chief of Department was Gregory Frederick.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) provides fire and EMS services to the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba. It operates from 27 fire stations, and 3 administration offices across the city.

The Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department (PGFD) is a combination career/volunteer county-level agency that provides "..fire prevention, fire protection, emergency medical services, rescue services and community outreach programs" for residents of Prince George's County, Maryland. The department is composed of volunteers from 33 fire companies throughout the county, that are represented by the Prince George's County Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association, as well as career firefighters affiliated with the Prince George's County Professional Firefighters and Paramedics Association, IAFF Local 1619. According to the Firehouse Magazine 2010 Combination Fire Department Run Survey, the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department covers a response area of approximately 580 miles, protects approximately 900,000 people, and has an annual operating budget of $132 million. Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department responded to 148,506 calls in 2016 according to the 2016 National Run Survey. 29,702 of those calls were fire related and 118,804 that were EMS calls, making Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department the busiest combination fire department in the United States to submit statistics.

The Loudoun County Combined Fire-Rescue System (LC-CFRS) is made up of the career Loudoun County Fire and Rescue (LCFR) and 16 volunteer organizations. LC-CFRS has the responsibility of protecting the citizens and property of the towns, villages, and suburbs of Loudoun County, Virginia, United States, from fires and fire hazards, providing emergency medical services, and technical rescue response services, including Hazardous Materials mitigation, Mass Casualty Incident response services, environmental danger response services and more. The headquarters and training facilities of the department are in Leesburg, off Sycolin Road.

The New Haven Fire Department (NHFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services to the city of New Haven, Connecticut. The New Haven Fire Department currently serves a population of over 130,000 people living in 19 square miles of land and is one of the largest fire departments in the state.

The Baltimore City Fire Department (BCFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services to the city of Baltimore, Maryland, United States. Founded in 1797 and established in 1859, the Baltimore City Fire Department covers an area of 81 square miles (210 km2) of land and 11 square miles (28 km2) of water, with a resident population of over 640,000 and a daytime population of over 1,000,000. The BCFD responds to approximately 235,000 emergency calls annually. There are two International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) locals; IAFF 734 for firefighters and IAFF 964 for officers.

FDNY EMS provides coverage of all five boroughs of New York City with ambulances and a variety of specialized response vehicles.

<i>Chicago Fire</i> (TV series) American drama television series

Chicago Fire is an American drama television series created by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas, with Dick Wolf as an executive producer. It is the first installment of Wolf Entertainment's Chicago franchise, which deals with different public services in Chicago, Illinois. The show follows the professional and personal lives of firefighters, rescue personnel, and paramedics of the Chicago Fire Department at the fictional Firehouse 51. The series premiered on NBC on October 10, 2012. As of May 24, 2023, the series had 239 episodes. In February 2020, the series was renewed for its ninth, tenth, and eleventh season. The tenth season premiered on September 22, 2021. The eleventh season premiered on September 21, 2022. In April 2023, the series was renewed for a twelfth season, which is scheduled to premiere on January 17, 2024.

The Vancouver Fire Department (VFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services to the city of Vancouver and, by contract, Clark County Fire District 5, in Washington, United States. The VFD's response area is 91 square miles (240 km2) with a population of over 288,000 (2021). The VFD has the highest call volume per firefighter in the state. ALS transport is provided by AMR, making the VFD's service area population by far the largest in Western Washington without public ALS ambulance service.
