Para-taekwondo debuted at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan. [1]

Contents

Para-taekwondo is a variant of taekwondo for athletes with a variety of physical disabilities. The sport is governed by World Taekwondo (WT) since 2006. Only kyorugi (sparring) discipline is included and not poomsae (martial art forms).

Para Taekwondo is an adaptation of Taekwondo for disabled athletes. The sport's main governing body is World Taekwondo (WT). New disciplines such as kyorugi and poomsae, both martial arts forms, have been developed for para-athletes. On January 31, 2017, Para Taekwondo was confirmed as a sport for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) General Assembly the same year the WT became a full member of the IPC.

She was the only Para Taekwondo athlete to compete at the 2020 Paralympic games with Cerebral Palsy. All of Brianna's competitors were upper amputee athletes.

Daniil Sidorov is a Russian para taekwondo practitioner. He won one of the bronze medals in the men's 61 kg event at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan. He competed at the Summer Paralympics under the flag of the Russian Paralympic Committee.

Nathan Cesar Sodario Torquato is a Brazilian para taekwondo practitioner. He won the gold medal in the men's 61 kg event at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan. In the final, his opponent Mohamed El-Zayat of Egypt was unable to compete due to injury and, as a result, Torquato was awarded the gold medal.

Zainutdin Ataev is a Dagestani Russian para taekwondo practitioner. He won one of the bronze medals in the men's +75 kg event at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan. He competed at the Summer Paralympics under the flag of the Russian Paralympic Committee.

Mohamed El-Zayat is an Egyptian para taekwondo practitioner. He won the silver medal in the men's 61 kg event at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan. He received a kick to the head in his semi-final match against Daniil Sidorov. El-Zayat advanced to the final but he was unable to compete due to his injuries and, as a result, Nathan Torquato was awarded the gold medal.
