Port Augusta West is a suburb of Port Augusta, South Australia.
However, it has a separate early colonial history to Port Augusta, because it is on the Eyre Peninsula, while the rest of Port Augusta is on the east side of Spencer Gulf. It was not until 1926 that a bridge was built across the head of the Spencer Gulf to connect them, replacing a punt. [9]
The Corporate Town of Port Augusta West was gazetted on 6 October 1887, [10] and only merged into the Corporate Town of Port Augusta on 28 April 1932. [9]
Port Augusta West contains the junction of the Eyre Highway (to Eyre Peninsula and Western Australia), Stuart Highway (to the Far North and Northern Territory), and Augusta Highway (to Adelaide).
Port Augusta West is the only part of Port Augusta that is located on the western side of Spencer Gulf on the Eyre Peninsula. [11] It is about 2 kilometres (1.2 miles) west of the centre of Port Augusta and about 280 kilometres (170 miles) north of Adelaide city centre. [3]
Port Augusta West consists of an urban area on the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula, immediately west of the centre of Port Augusta. It is dissected by the Augusta Highway, which branches in the middle of the suburb, to become the Stuart Highway which heads north, and the Eyre Highway which heads west. The Whyalla-Port Augusta railway line passes to the north and west of the suburb’s urban area. [11] [12]
The suburb is mainly residential on the eastern side of the suburb. The area between the Eyre Highway and the Stuart Highway on the west side of the suburb’s built area is zoned for industrial use. The Port Augusta Airport is located to the south end of the suburb and is separated from the residential area by open space and a “vegetation buffer”. [13]
The suburb includes the Port Augusta Golf Club and Port Augusta West Primary School. [11] [14] [15] The suburb also contains the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden, West Side Foreshore, Westside Lookout Tower, Rotary Park, Northey Crescent and Sid Welk Park. [16] [17] [18] [19] [20] [21]
The historic Port Augusta West Water Tower in Mitchell Terrace is listed on the South Australian Heritage Register. [22]
Port Augusta West is located within the federal division of Grey, the state electoral district of Stuart, and the local government area of the City of Port Augusta. [6] [5] [2] The suburb is also located within the South Australian Government region of the Far North. [23]
Port Augusta West has a warm desert climate (Köppen climate classification BWk). [24]

Port Augusta is a small city in South Australia. Formerly a seaport, it is now a road traffic and railway junction city mainly located on the east coast of the Spencer Gulf immediately south of the gulf's head and about 322 kilometres (200 mi) north of the state capital, Adelaide. The suburb of Port Augusta West is located on the west side of the gulf on the Eyre Peninsula. Other major industries included, up until the mid-2010s, electricity generation. At June 2018, the estimated urban population was 13,799,> having declined at an average annual rate of -0.53% over the preceding five years.
Eyre Highway is a 1,660-kilometre (1,030 mi) highway linking Western Australia and South Australia via the Nullarbor Plain. Signed as National Highways 1 and A1, it forms part of Highway 1 and the Australian National Highway network linking Perth and Adelaide. It was named after explorer Edward John Eyre, who was the first European to cross the Nullarbor by land, in 1840–1841. Eyre Highway runs from Norseman in Western Australia, past Eucla, to the state border. Continuing to the South Australian town of Ceduna, it then crosses the top of the Eyre Peninsula before reaching the city of Port Augusta in South Australia.
The Eyre Peninsula is a triangular peninsula in South Australia. It is bounded on the east by Spencer Gulf, the west by the Great Australian Bight, and the north by the Gawler Ranges.
The City of Port Augusta is a local government area located at the northern end of Spencer Gulf in South Australia. It is centred on the town of Port Augusta. The city was the site of South Australia's main power supplier, the Port Augusta powerhouse, located on the coast of the Spencer Gulf.

Warramboo (wɔrˑræmˑbʉː) is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on the Eyre Peninsula about 334 kilometres (208 mi) north-west of the state capital of Adelaide and about 26 kilometres (16 mi) south-east of the municipal seat of Wudinna. It is 189 kilometres (117 mi) north of Port Lincoln on the Tod Highway and is the north-western terminus of the wheat haulage lines radiating from Port Lincoln on the Eyre Peninsula Railway. The railway line was built from 1907–1915 to develop the cereal industry. The grain silos are a distinctive local landmark of the town.
Yorkey Crossing is a ford in the Australian state of South Australia located at the head of Spencer Gulf in the gazetted locality of Emeroo about 4 nautical miles north of Port Augusta. As of 2014, it is the site of an unsealed road that serves as a by-pass route around the head of the gulf for 'over dimensional vehicles', which are not permitted to cross the gulf using the Joy Baluch AM Bridge. It is also near the location of the crossing for the Kalgoorlie to Port Augusta Railway built after 1911. It is considered to be the most north easterly part of Eyre Peninsula.

Whyalla Barson is a suburb in South Australia located on the northern side of the city of Whyalla in the north east corner of Eyre Peninsula. It is named after Thomas Leonard Barson, superintendent of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited in Whyalla from 1933 to 1938. The suburb was first established in 2011 with revisions to boundaries occurring both in 2013 and 2014.
