Prince Albert City Council is the governing body of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Composition

The Council consists of the City's Mayor and eight elected city councillors, with city councillors representing the interests of each of the eight wards of the City. The last election for council was in 2024.

History

The Council's history dates back to the incorporation of Prince Albert Settlement as a town in 1885, under its first mayor; Thomas McKay. It was also the year, Prince Albert was incorporated as a town.

Council members

Mayor

Bill Powalinsky is the current mayor [1] of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and head of the City Council. He was elected in the 2024 civic election having defeated incumbent mayor, Greg Dionne, and mayoral candidate Brittany Marie Smith. [2] [3]

Ward 1

Daniel Brown is the current councillor representing Ward 1, which encompasses the West Flat area of the City. Ward 1 currently has the highest percentage of youth of any ward in Prince Albert and is rebranding itself as a vibrant desirable place to live. Ward 1 runs adjacent the North Saskatchewan River and hosts a large portion of the Rotary Trail. He was elected in the 2024 civic election having defeated Larry Vandale. He replaced Charlene Miller, who opted-to not seek re-election. [2] [4]

Ward 2

Troy Parenteau is the current councillor representing Ward 2, which encompasses the Historical Cathedral District, Prince Albert's downtown core, as well as Hazedell, Nordale, and the North Industrial district north of the North Saskatchewan River. He was elected in the 2024 civic election having defeated Meghan Mayer. He replaced Terra Lennox-Zepp who opted-to not seek re-election. [2] [5]

Ward 3

Tony Head is the current councillor representing Ward 3 which includes the Midtown area of the East Flat portion of the City. He was first elected in the 2020 civic election. [6]

Ward 4

Bryce Laewetz is the current councillor representing Ward 4 which encompasses the eastern portion of the East Flat area of the City. He was elected in the 2024 civic election having defeated Perry Trusty. He replaced Don Cody decided who opted to not seek re-election. [2] [7]

Ward 5

Stephen Ring is the current councillor representing Ward 5 which encompasses the Crescent Heights area of the City, as well as parts of the Carlton Park neighbourhood. He was elected in the 2024 civic election having defeated Shaun Harris. He replaced Dennis Ogrodnick who opted to not seek re-election. [2] [8]

Ward 6

Blake Edwards is the current councillor representing Ward 6 which encompasses the Crescent Acres and Carlton Park neighbourhoods on the east side of the City. He was first elected in the 2016 civic election. [9]

Ward 7

Dawn Kilmer is the current councillor representing Ward 7. Ward 7 includes the East Hill neighbourhood of the City. She was first elected in the 2020 civic election. [6]

Ward 8

Darren Solomon is the current councillor for Ward 8 which encompasses the West Hill neighbourhood of the city. Solomon was elected in a by-election in 2023 after Ted Zurakowski resigned earlier that year. [10] [11]

Lakewood Suburban Centre is a mixed-development neighbourhood located in southeast Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. It is a classified as a "suburban centre" subdivision, composed of mostly medium to high-density multiple-unit dwellings, commercial areas and civic facilities. As of 2011, the area is home to 1,850 residents. Carlton Park is a small neighbourhood that is located between Marquis Road, 6th Avenue East, 28th Street East, and 15th Avenue East. It is part of the east side of Prince Albert.

Franklin Harford Spence was an Ontario pharmacist and political figure. He represented Fort William in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1923 to 1934 and from 1937 to 1943 as a Conservative member. He defeated UFO-Labor cabinet minister Harry (Henry) Mills in the 1923 election, was re-elected in December 1926 and again in October 1929, chiefly because of the popularity of Ontario premier Howard Ferguson - "A vote for Spence is a vote for Ferguson," he advertised. He played a subordinate role to other Conservative party heavyweights from Northern Ontario, Donald McDonald Hogarth and Francis Henry Keefer. He was defeated by Liberal Joseph Edmund Crawford in the June 1934 election, but won the seat again in October 1937 when the Liberal vote split between the official candidate Harry Murphy and the Independent Liberal Crawford.

The 2000 Hamilton municipal election was a municipal election held on November 13, 2000, to elect municipal officials for the City of Hamilton. On election day, Hamiltonians elected a mayor, 15 city councillors, and trustees for the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board, Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, Conseil scolaire Viamonde, and Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir. This was the first election of the "New" City of Hamilton after the dissolution of the Region of Hamilton-Wentworth and the amalgamation of Dundas, Stoney Creek, Flamborough, Ancaster, Glanbrook, and Waterdown with the existing city of Hamilton.

Gordon S. Wyant, KC is a Canadian lawyer and politician. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan with the Saskatchewan Party for the constituency of Saskatoon Northwest from 2010 to 2024. Wyant served in the cabinets of both Brad Wall and Scott Moe, including two stints as Attorney General. Prior to entering provincial politics, Wyant served on Saskatoon City Council from 2003 to 2010.

Henry Dayday is a Canadian politician who served as the mayor of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan from 1988 to 2000. He was elected mayor four times, tied for the most since mayoral terms were extended beyond one year in 1954, although he is tied as the second longest-serving mayor in the city's history as the term limit for mayor was extended from three to four years in 2012. However, Dayday did serve the longest overall stint on City Council at 24 consecutive years.

Michael Fougere is an American-Canadian politician who served as mayor of Regina, Saskatchewan. He was elected mayor on October 24, 2012 with 42 percent of the vote among nine candidates, running on a platform that included housing, infrastructure, regional economic development and continuing the Regina Revitalization Initiative. Prior to being elected as mayor of Regina, Fougere served as a city councillor in Ward 4 which covered the majority of the city's south-eastern neighbourhoods, being re-elected five times. He was first elected to city council in 1997. At the time he was the co-founder of the Association of Concerned Taxpayers.

Cynthia Marie Block is a Canadian politician and the current mayor-elect of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Block was elected in the 2024 Saskatchewan municipal elections and will be the city's 29th mayor. Block is the first woman to be elected mayor of Saskatoon.
