Regis Wiriranai Chakabva (born 20 September 1987) is a Zimbabwean cricketer and vice-captain of the team in all formats of the game. He is a right-handed wicket-keeper batter. He played through school-level cricket and started making his mark as a good batter with sound wicket-keeping abilities. He got picked to play for Zimbabwe. [1]
Chakabva made his first-class debut for Northerns in an April 2007 Logan Cup match against Easterns. Opening the batting,he made scores of 0 and 5 in the match. [2] After just four first-class matches for his province and with a top score of 35,he was picked for a Zimbabwe A side. He made his first half-century against a South African academy side in August 2007. [3] Chakabva was then selected for a Zimbabwe Provinces side to play in South African domestic competition in the 2007–08 season;he made his maiden first-class century against Namibia in this tournament. [4] In 2013/2014,he played grade cricket for Magpies Cricket Club in Mackay,Queensland. [5]
In December 2020,he was selected to play for the Eagles in the 2020–21 Logan Cup. [6] [7]
In October 2008,Chakabva was selected in the squad for the Zimbabwe national team for the 2008 Quadrangular Twenty20 Series in Canada. [8] He made his international debut in a Twenty20 International match against Pakistan on 12 October 2008. Playing as a specialist batsman (Tatenda Taibu was the wicket-keeper) he scored one run before being run out. Pakistan won the match by seven wickets. [9] Zimbabwe would go on to finish third in the tournament. [10]
After this tournament,the Zimbabwe side went to Nairobi,Kenya,for a series of One Day International matches against Kenya and Ireland. Chakabva made his One Day International debut against Kenya on 19 October,this time as wicket-keeper with Taibu playing as a specialist batsman. Chakabva scored 41 runs from 44 balls and was the last wicket to fall as Zimbabwe lost by 95 runs. [11]
In 2010,Chakabva toured Canada and the Netherlands with the Zimbabwean side. Following the readmission of Zimbabwe to Test cricket in 2011,he made his Test debut against New Zealand at Bulawayo in November that year,keeping wicket and scoring 37 and 5 batting at number seven. [12] [13]
Chakabva scored his maiden Test century on 3 July 2014 against Bangladesh at Khulna. However,Zimbabwe lost the match. [14]
In 2021,Chakabva was made the vice-captain of the Zimbabwe side.
In 2022,he began his service as the vice-captain of the Test side as well. Later in 2022,Regis Chakabva captained Zimbabwe for the first time against Bangladesh and started with a win.
Regis has been inconsistent in his batting since his career has been affected by the lack of playing opportunities. He has,however,improved as a wicket-keeper over the years and is quite secure behind the stumps.
The Zimbabwe men's national cricket team,also known as the Chevrons,represents Zimbabwe in men's international cricket and is overseen by Zimbabwe Cricket. Zimbabwe has been a Full Member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) since 1992. As of May,2023,Zimbabwe was ranked 10th in Tests,11th in One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 11th in Twenty20 internationals (T20Is) by the ICC.
Tatenda Taibu is a former Zimbabwean cricketer who captained the Zimbabwe national cricket team. He is a wicket-keeper-batsman. From 6 May 2004 to 5 September 2019,he held the record for being the youngest test captain in history when he captained his team against Sri Lanka until Rashid Khan of Afghanistan claimed the record. Taibu is currently serving as Head Coach for Cricket PNG and its national Men’s team,known as the PNG Barramundis.
Brendan Ross Murray Taylor is a Zimbabwean former international cricketer and a former Zimbabwean captain,who played all formats of the game. Taylor is a right-handed batsman but is also an off spinner. In 2015,former Zimbabwe captain Alistair Campbell described Taylor as "our standout player for the last seven or eight years". He is known for his unorthodox shots especially his ability to play upper cuts over the third man and ramp shots with elegance and are often considered as his trademark signature shots. His style of play and ability to make substantial contribution with the bat often drew comparisons with that of Andy Flower. He represented Zimbabwe in four ICC T20 World Cup tournaments in 2007,2010,2012 and 2014. Also,he represented Zimbabwe in three ICC ODI world cups as well in 2007,2011 and 2015.
Chamunorwa Justice "Chamu" Chibhabha is a Zimbabwean cricketer who bats right-handed and bowls right-arm medium pace. In January 2020,Zimbabwe Cricket named him as the captain of Zimbabwe's One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) squads on an interim basis.
The West Indies cricket team toured Zimbabwe in June and July 2001 to play 2 Test matches against Zimbabwe. The series was named Clive Lloyd Trophy,in honor of former West Indian great Clive Lloyd. West Indies won the first title of the trophy by 1–0.
Cephas Zhuwao is a Zimbabwean international cricketer. He bats left-handed and bowls slow left arm orthodox spin.
Kyle Malcolm Jarvis is a Zimbabwean former cricketer who represented Zimbabwe and played for Lancashire. The son of another former Zimbabwean international cricketer Malcolm Jarvis,he was educated at St John's College,Harare,where he excelled at rugby and cricket. Kyle was a key bowler for Zimbabwe in the 2008 Under-19 World Cup and he also played for the Zimbabwe U-19 Rugby Team. He was coached by Zimbabwean veteran seamer Heath Streak. He was one of the fastest bowlers to have played for Zimbabwe bowling at 140 km/h very often during his early career. On 17 June 2021,Jarvis retired from all forms of cricket after battling a trio of illnesses earlier this year.
The Southern Rocks is one of five Zimbabwean cricket franchises. They are a first-class cricket team,based in the Masvingo and Matabeleland South area. They play their home matches at Masvingo Sports Club in Masvingo. The team initially ceased to play after the 2013–14 season. In their 47 first-class matches they won 3,lost 27,and drew 17. However,in December 2020,Zimbabwe Cricket confirmed they would be one of the teams playing in the 2020–21 Logan Cup Southern Rocks won their first Logan Cup trophy in the same 2020–21 season.
The Mashonaland Eagles is one of five cricket Zimbabwean cricket franchises. They are based in the Harare Metropolitan and Mashonaland Central area and play both first-class and limited overs cricket. They play their home matches at Harare Sports Club in Harare.
The Mountaineers is one of five cricket Zimbabwean cricket franchises. They are a first-class cricket team,based in the Manicaland and Mashonaland East area. They play their home matches at Mutare Sports Club in Mutare.
