As of the census [6] of 2000, there were 988 people, 446 households, and 300 families residing in the town. The population density was 857.3 inhabitants per square mile (331.0/km2). There were 490 housing units at an average density of 425.2 per square mile (164.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 89.17% White, 10.22% African American, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 0.10% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.40% of the population.
There were 446 households, out of which 23.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.6% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 29.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 19.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.73.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 19.4% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 22.5% who were 65 years of age or older.
