Soft tennis at the Asian Games

Soft tennis has been an Asian Games sport since the 1994 edition. It was featured at the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing, China, as a demonstration sport.

It was governed by the Asian Games Federation. A total of 1,820 athletes representing 20 Asian National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participated in the Games. The program featured competitions in 13 different sports encompassing 97 events, including four non-Olympic sports, judo, table tennis, tennis and volleyball. Four of these competition sports – field hockey, table tennis, tennis and volleyball – were introduced for the first time in the Asian Games.

Soft tennis is a racket game played on a court of two halves, separated by a net. Soft tennis originated in Japan in 1884. Like regular tennis, it is played by individuals (singles) or pairs (doubles), whose objective is to hit the ball over the net, landing within the confines of the court, with the aim of preventing one's opponent from being able to hit it back. Matches are generally best-of-seven or best-of-nine. Soft tennis differs from regular tennis in that it uses soft rubber balls instead of hard yellow balls.

National High School Games is the largest multi-sport event for junior and senior high school players in Taiwan. The Games started in 1952, under the name of Taiwan Provincial High School Games. It is now organized by the Sports Administration of the Ministry of Education. The host city changes every year. The name "National High School Games" has been used since 2000.

The 2013 East Asian Games, officially known as the VI East Asian Games, was an international multi-sport event that took place in Tianjin, China, between 6 October and 15 October 2013. 2,422 Athletes from nine East Asian nations competed in 254 events in 24 sports.

Soft tennis was a discipline of the tennis competitions at the 2002 Asian Games. Competition took place from October 1 to October 7. All events were held at Sajik Tennis Courts. The host nation South Korea dominated the competition by winning all seven gold medals.
