The Somalia national basketball team is the national basketball team of Somalia. It is a member of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and is governed by the Somali Basketball Federation.

Administration

As of April 2014, Nur Mohamed Abdullahi serves as the president of the Somalia Basketball Federation. Sadak Abdulkadir is the Secretary General. [2] The captain of the team is Yusu Qaafow. [3]

History

The Somalia Basketball Federation became affiliated with FIBA in 1960. [2] It is part of the executive board of the Arab Basketball Confederation. [4]

Although the national basketball squad has yet to pass the qualification stages of the FIBA World Championship, it won a bronze medal at the 1981 FIBA Africa Championship, when Somalia hosted the tournament. The team also participates in the basketball event at the Pan Arab Games.

Competitive record

AfroBasket

Somalia has played in five AfroBasket tournaments, with its best result being the bronze medal in 1981 when the country hosted the tournament. Since 1985, Somalia has been absent from the tournament, although it has played in all qualifying rounds since 2015.

In terms of the number of successful performances, it is inferior to the traditionally strong teams of Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, and Egypt. In 2011, the Tunisian national team became the champion of Africa for the first time in its history, defeating the Angola team in the AfroBasket 2011 final. The tournament was hosted by Libya after Nigeria, the original host, withdrew from hosting after not conforming to FIBA Africa guidelines.

The FIBA Basketball World Cup qualification is the process that a national basketball team goes through to qualify for the FIBA Basketball World Cup finals. Qualifiers are held within four FIBA continental zones Africa, Americas, Europe, and Asia-Oceania play in a combined Asia-Pacific region to qualify for the FIBA Basketball World Cup, which are organized by their respective confederations. One extra berth is allocated for the specific continental zone that hosts the event, in addition to the set berths allotted for the region.

The basketball qualification for the Summer Olympics men's basketball tournament occurred from 2014 to 2016; all five FIBA zones sent in teams.
