The FIBA Africa Championship 1995 took place in Algiers, Algeria from December 11 to December 18, 1995. The top country in this FIBA Africa Championship earned the berth allocated to Africa for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Angola won the tournament, the country's 4th consecutive African championship, by beating Senegal in the final.

At the club level, he won five Angolan League championship titles with Primeiro de Agosto and four Angolan Cups, before moving to Benfica in Portugal, where he won seven Portuguese national championships and three Portuguese Federation Cups. He also went on to play for CSP Limoges in France, Baloncesto Málaga in Spain, and Portugal Telecom in Portugal.

Central African Republic won the tournament, the country's 2nd African championship, by beating Egypt in the final.

The men's national basketball team of the United States won the gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Led by Basketball Hall of Fame head coach Lenny Wilkens, the team won gold for the second straight Olympics. Nicknamed Dream Team III, the team included five players who were Olympic teammates on the original "Dream Team", from the 1992 Olympic basketball tournament: Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, Scottie Pippen, John Stockton, and David Robinson. Gary Payton was a late replacement for the injured Glenn Robinson.
