The FIBA Africa Championship 1987 was an international basketball tournament for teams in the International Basketball Federation's FIBA Africa zone hosted by Tunisia from December 17 to December 18, 1987. The games were played in Tunis. The top two countries in this FIBA Africa Championship earned the two berths allocated to Africa for the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Central African Republic won the tournament, the country's 2nd African championship, by beating Egypt in the final.

The hosting duties were originally awarded to Belgrade, Yugoslavia, but after United Nations limited participation in sporting events in Yugoslavia, Toronto stepped in as a replacement option in 1992.

The country entered 15 competitors, the highest number of Central Africans appearing at any Games so far; with the basketball team comprising 12 of them. In addition to the boxers Fidèle Mohinga and Moussa Wiawindi, there was marathon runner Adolphe Ambowodé, who had previously competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics. No medals were won by any of those athletes.

The FIBA U18 AfroBasket previously known as the FIBA U18 African Championship is an under-18 basketball championship in the International Basketball Federation's FIBA Africa zone. The tournament is held biennially. The top two teams qualify directly to the FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup.

The FIBA U18 Women's AfroBasket previously known as the FIBA U18 Women's African Championship is an under-18 basketball championship in the International Basketball Federation's FIBA Africa zone. The tournament is held biennially. The top two teams qualify directly to the FIBA Under-19 Women's World Cup.

The basketball qualification for the Summer Olympics men's basketball tournament occurred from 2014 to 2016; all five FIBA zones sent in teams.
