Stade Joseph Marien is a multi-use stadium in Brussels, Belgium. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home ground of Royale Union Saint-Gilloise. The stadium holds 9,400 since 2018 [1] [2] and was opened in 1919. It is located within the Duden Park in the municipality of Forest, and its entrance is at one end of the Rue du Stade.

History

Early construction

In 1909 Royale Union Saint-Gilloise was offered a site in the Duden Park in Forest, Brussels. Construction started in 1915, during World War I, and ended in 1919. On 14 September 1919 the stadium opened with a friendly game between Royale Union Saint-Gilloise and A.C. Milan. [3]

1920 Summer Olympics

The stadium hosted some of the football events for the 1920 Summer Olympics.

1926 renovation

In 1926, the stadium was renovated after a design by architect Albert Callewaert (1888–1957). At this time it was given the 'Art Deco' facade that holds bas-reliefs by Oscar De Clercq (1892–1968). [3] [5]

The second Inter-Cities Fairs Cup took place between 1958 and 1960 and was won by Barcelona for the second consecutive time in a two-legged final against Birmingham City. Once again, a number of countries sent a representative team for one of their main cities, although London sent Chelsea instead. The Copenhagen XI was made up mostly of BK Frem players, and played in their colours.

Max Houben Belgian athlete

Max Houben was a versatile Belgian athlete who competed from the early 1920s until his death at the 1949 FIBT World Championships. He won a silver medal in the four-man bobsled event at the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, and was the oldest medalist at the Winter Olympics until Canadian Russ Howard won a gold medal in men's curling at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.

Charles Griffiths was an English football player and manager. He played in England, and coached in Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands in the early 20th century.

Pierre-Joseph Destrebecq was a Belgian international football player. He played as striker in Union Saint-Gilloise, Racing Club de Bruxelles and Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht. With the national side, he also played the first official match of the Belgian national team against France on 1 May 1904. The encounter resulted in a 3–3 draw and Destrebecq scored once in this match. He scored 30 goals in 81 first division games.

Frans Demol, nicknamed Protje, was a former Belgian international footballer and manager of Belgium.

The 1929 Aciéries d'Angleur Tournoi, also known as the 1929 Tournoi d'Été de Liège, was an international football tournament hosted in Liège, Belgium. It was won by the subsequent 1929–30 League of Ireland champions, Bohemians. The tournament is notable in Republic of Ireland football history as the only occasion, to date, that a League of Ireland team has won a European trophy. In addition to Bohemians, three Belgian teams - Standard Liège, R.F.C. Tilleur-Saint-Nicolas and Royale Union Saint-Gilloise - also took part.

RWDM47 Belgian football club

Racing White Daring de Molenbeek 47, also known as RWD Molenbeek and often referred to as RWDM, is a Belgian football club founded in 1951 as Standaard Wetteren. In 2015, Wetteren folded and merged with another club, liberating the matricule which was sold to people wanting to revive the former RWDM with matricule 47 which folded in 2002. As such the new club was named RWDM47. The club has been on the rise ever since winning two consecutive promotions from the fifth tier to the fourth and fourth to third. The 2021–22 season is the 124th season in the existence of Royale Union Saint-Gilloise and the club's first season back in the top flight of Belgian football since the 1972–73 season. In addition to the domestic league, Royale Union Saint-Gilloise also participated in this season's edition of the Belgian Cup, where they reached the sixth round, being knocked out by KV Mechelen.

The 2020–21 season was the 124th season in the history of Royale Union Saint-Gilloise and the club's sixth consecutive season in the second division of Belgian football.
